Cycling UK Mike Bromley pedals us up hills, down dales - through our nation’s rich history and stunning scenery.Whether you are pedalling through the burn of a steep ascent, or reliving the childish rapture of rolling down country lanes, cycling is a soul-fortifying way of seeing the UK.

For gutsy folk searching for their inner Roman warrior, the 174 mile-long Hadrian’s Cycleway is known as one of the best long-distance bike routes in the UK. The route starts at the Roman Bath House in Ravenglass, an idyllic ancient village in Cumbria, and finishes at the Arbeia Roman Fort & Museum in South Sheilds. This four-to-six day odyssey crosses some of the North’s most bracing countryside. Details on shorter routes can be purchased from Sustrans’ website.

Never underestimate the humble Midlands. Staffordshire’s countryside is an arresting cocktail of various flavours. From rugged moorlands to

wild deer and dense woodland, the

Manifold Trail is an opportunity to freewheel

through some natural charms. Gently snake through the picturesque valleys of the Hamps and Manifold Rivers. Pass beneath the yawning mouth of Thor’s Cave, situated in a steep limestone crag. With rocky landscapes and wooded slopes, this two-hour cycle across relatively undemanding terrain is steeped in natural beauty.

The Tamar River in the UK’s South West, borders Devon and Cornwall. Cornish folklore claims that the devil would not cross their border for fear of ending up as pasty filling. Tamar is derived from an ancient word meaning ‘dark flowing’, but fortunately the 30 miles of scenic trails are on dry land. The Wheal Maria Trail will weave you through woodland whilst providing views across the Tamar Valley and its mines. This route can be completed as a circuit in a clockwise direction and is mostly flat but does include some steep, challenging sections. Pack a devilishly good Cornish pasty for a mid-route fuel stop.

Summer is a well anticipated affair in the UK... so no excuses for staying indoors. Regardless of whether the sun attends, it will be one heck of a party – here’s your chance to cannonball in and truly get involved. Volunteer with Oxfam Stewarding 2013. Tender your services to the UK’s biggest festivals. Pack your wellies and assist your team at the gate, fire tower or stage. The money Oxfam raises helps people living in poverty around the world – a worthwhile cause and rewarding work. If you’re in financial dire straits then paid festival work also exists. Tune into the mighty vibes whilst

litter picking, leafleting, tallying and serving drinks to happy campers. Speaking of tents – assembling marquees keeps you physically fit, improves your tan (hopefully!) and earns that beer money. Residential summer language schools open their doors from June to August. Around the country activity leaders arrange diverse outings for students. Tourists flock to the coast and cities during the summer, increasing the demand for reliable workers in the hospitality sector. Some companies offer food and accommodation as one sweet package. Ideal work for the cash-strapped backpacker!

Homelanz Festival is migrating back to British soil for a third year. A glorious slice of the Southern Hemisphere sunshine, Homelanz is an annual one-day festival celebrating all things ‘Down Under’. London’s leafy suburb of Brentford is transformed into a backpacker haven swarming with Australian, New Zealand and South African travellers (and those who want to escape Britain for the day without the pricey plane ticket!)

Music lovers seeking new talent will be delighted with the line-up at this unique festival. Gracing the stage will be the finest talent the Southern Hemisphere has to offer – a definite excuse to dance your jandals off! This is the ultimate backpacker home away from home. South African favourites, Desmond and the Tutus will be rocking out with some impressive facial hair on the main stage. For funky music with a moral compass, Aussie urban roots crew Blue King Brown will also be bringing down the

house with their mellow reggae beats. The final headline act to be announced was New Zealand’s Tahuna Breaks. What a line-up!

And it’s not just music... cultural performers will inspire people of all ages, and the Chill Out Area, Rugby Bus and Kids Zone will keep everyone entertained. Foodies rejoice! Vendors will be on hand to tantalize an array of taste buds with a feast of Australasian flavours. There will even be a mouth-watering selection of beverages on offer straight from south of the equator.

So whether you want to re-connect with your roots or just escape to a different culture right on your doorstep; Homelanz festival is, most certainly, a didgeri-’DO’. www.homelanz.co.uk

The long-standing cultural art scene of southern Cornwall resides in St Ives where the town arcs around the old fishing village’s harbour. Tate Modern offers a huge splash of culture, along with many quirky arty cafés ideal for ‘people watching’ - avoid the daring seagulls!

Perching on the north coast is the tiny town of Bude, dotted with the surfing havens of Widemouth Bay and Sandymouth. Off the beaten track are hidden coves; Bossiny, accessed via a cliff-embedded track, and Trebarwith Strand’s small beach encased by cliffs.

Land’s End

Isles of Scilly

Crowned as the surfing capital of the UK, Newquay is permanently bustling with surfers and party-goers. Not forgetting its significant harbour, occupied by vibrantly coloured boats and stacks of lobster pots.

Newquay

Falmouth celebrates all things nautical and Cornish. It boasts the third deepest natural harbour in the world! Famous for its art school, a creative vibe runs deep. Take a short ferry ride to St Mawes, sprinkled with whitewash houses and guarded by Henry VIII’s cloverleaf-shaped castle.

Penzance, a busy seaside town, is overlooked by St Michael’s Mount. Visit Land’s End or set sail to the Isles of Scilly to discover crystal clear waters, historical shipwrecks and 60 miles of cliff walks.

From here, soak in views of the Plymouth Sound, Drake’s Island and Cornwall’s Mount Edgcumbe. Plymouth Gin has been produced since 1793 in England’s oldest working distillery ‘Black Friars’, found at the historic Barbican.

Lundy Island

M’hampstead, a market town on Dartmoor’s edge, is the perfect base. Dotted with heather, snaking streams and tors – with large rocks balancing upon one another – give a distinctively mystical feel.

Home to the Queen of Crime author, Agatha Christie, the seaside town of Torquay makes up part of the area known as the English Rivera. Torquay’s ‘Rock Walk’ boasts amazing views and is magically lit up at night.

Built upon the River Exe, Exeter is the gateway to Devon & Cornwall. The city’s ornate Cathedral towers magnificently over the central green. Home to the narrowest street in the world, old time pubs famous for Sir Francis Drake’s presence and a strong live music scene. Underground medieval passages run beneath the High Street – built to bring natural spring water into the city.

We recently sent captivating Kara down to Brighton for some sea air and cosmopolitan vibes. Kipps Backpackers gave her a warm welcome.

Kipps Backpackers – Brighton

Only a short stroll away from the station, sits Kipps hostel. Warmly welcomed by Caroline, the staff member on duty, a tour of the hostel immediately commenced. A continental breakfast spread awaits at the bar every morning, providing guests with an array of cereals, hot beverages and an old fashioned cake stand with crumpets and scones. Events are held each evening, fostering a community feel at the hostel. On the night of our arrival, guests indulged in bangers and mash, before heading out for a night on the town.

Over five years, the premise has transformed from an old fashioned

hotel into a modern hostel enriched with new wave art work and seaside touches. Owner Lee Parsons acquired a summer job at a hostel in 1994 after his first year studying law at university. His love for the work persuaded him to ditch his degree and 19 years later he now has two hostels of his own – his Brighton beauty and Canterbury medieval town house – both called Kipps.

The name Kipps derives from the slang word to sleep and there are plenty of spaces to rest your head here. 36 beds are spread across three floors, with two ten-bed dorm rooms, and a mixture of doubles, singles and twins. My travel

Stepping outside the train station, scents of the sea filled the air and

flashy characters caught my eye. Home to the famous English playwright,

Graham Greene, Brighton screams culture and creativity at every corner. From the cosmopolitan

cobbled streets of the North Laine shopping district, to the colourful Hove Huts affront the shoreline, it’s a

picturesque place. And with a raving nightlight life, this seaside city gets even funkier once the sun goes down. Hostel R

companion and I bunked in a neatly decorated twin room with our very own couch, complementary toiletries,

kettle and biscuits. A beachfront theme sweeps across the third floor reminding travellers of their close proximity to the sea. The work of internationally known graffiti artist, Banksy, is showcased on the second floor, giving an alternative edge.

Located in the ‘cultural quarter’ of Brighton, Kipps is smack bang in the middle of all the top tourist attractions. Directly across from the hostel resides the Royal Pavilion. Once the palace of King George IV, this lavish historical site captivates the eye with Indian-style domes and Moorish minarets.

Cupcake shops, cute cafes, quaint boutiques and vintage stores line the narrow alleyways of the North Laine

shopping district. Meander along the Pier and take in the sea sights before venturing into Kemptown to wet your whistle on a 2-for-1 happy hour special at one of the trendy bars.

Upon returning to Kipps we sipped £2 ciders on the outdoor terrace, chatting to other travellers and playing board games. We were sad to say goodbye to Kipps. With its prime location in a trendy seaside city, what more could any traveller ask for?

Geoffrey Chaucers’ storytelling pilgrims in his famous Canterbury Tales, long ago journeyed from London to the clean, green city of Canterbury, Kent. Their destination was the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral – an archbishop who was murdered there in 1170. Today the architecturally stunning Cathedral forms part of a World Heritage Site, ensuring its expansive beauty and rich history remains preserved. Canterbury’s cobbled walkways are dotted with boutique eateries and

olde English pubs. Those who keep their ears to the ground will know about Canterbury’s Roman past – beneath your feet lies the remains of the Roman town. Descend below street level to uncover the preserved ruins of a Roman townhouse and accompanying mosaics and artifacts. A stone’s throw away is Kent’s beautiful north coast. Take a trip to Whitstable and sample some salty oysters or enjoy a stroll along the beach with its colourful seaside huts.

Bristol Magic Home of the famous street artist Banksy and a raving underground music scene, Bristol is the new wave city of the South West. The Cultural Quarter of Stokes Croft is a mere stones throw away from the central bus station. Defined by its graffiti tattered buildings, art studios and co-operative owned cafes, this alternative area is buzzing with late night bars, locavore eateries and a number of colourful characters.

Shop-a-holics rejoice! Keep wandering up Stokes Croft and stumble onto Gloucester Road, renowned for being the longest street of independent shops in Europe. Take an afternoon to explore the endless stretch of charity shops, boutiques, green grocers and organic food stores, as well as the array of quirky pubs and cafes dotted along this two mile shopping stretch. On Saturday July 6th, nearby St Pauls will be hosting the summer’s biggest street party, promoting the appreciation of African and Caribbean arts and culture.

Nature junkies do not fear! The leafy streets of St Werburghs pleasantly balance Bristol’s urban edge. Wander through the colourful eco-community known as ‘The Yard’ then stop by St Werburghs City Farm to feed the piglets before supping a pint of West Country

cider in the City Farm Pub’s hippy-tastic beer garden.

En route to the city centre pass via Nelson Street and feast your eyes on some of the most impressive street art in the city. The artist elements of Stokes Croft have influenced the council to hop aboard the graffiti train. Each year the council hires professional artists to transform the street’s industrial buildings into captivating images for the eye.

Boats of all shapes and sizes float down Bristol’s beautiful harbour on a sunny summer’s day. Bristol Harbour Festival will be taking place from the 26th-28th of July showcasing some of the city’s best musical talents and performers, free of charge.

Take the trek up Park Street and venture over the Clifton Suspension

Bridge, built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1864. Cross this architectural masterpiece to see how the colourful houses of Bristol light up the city below and how the calming hills of the English countryside rise in the distance.

The pulsating heart of England does not only encompass a cosmopolitan edge, but it is steeped in antiquity and beauty. As the second largest city in England (after London), you only need to cast your eyes upon the ‘Bullring’ to behold Birmingham’s transition from a vapid, industrial landscape to a vibrant, cultural hub. Are you a lover of Shakespeare and appreciative of quaint, olde worlde towns? Stratford-upon-Avon is

your mecca. South of this enchanting town is Oxford, famous for its prestigious university and prolific architecture. If heading t’up North is on the agenda, utilise Nottingham as a gateway to the Peak District. Synonymous with Robin Hood and a pumping nightlife, this up-and-coming city is an amalgamation of medieval history and a modern culture.

NorthOut with the old and in with the Newcastle. This resourceful city has emerged triumphant over its post-industrial decline and regenerated itself into a sophisticated, trendy urban centre. Once heavily reliant upon the industry of coal mining, the city is now a significant business and financial hub with considerable growth in the creative industries.

Originally a medieval town, Newcastle was only endowed with city status in 1882. Hence why its natives, Geordies, fondly refer to it as the ‘toon’. Renowned for their cheery disposition and playful sense of humour, the Geordies’ have a thick and unique accent.

Gateshead Millennium Bridge stretches across the River Tyne –

the semi-oval shape slowly tilts 40 degrees allowing ships to pass underneath.

Hugging the Tyne’s banks, the Quayside has emerged; a modern hub of music, art and culture. Behold the musical flair of performers at The Sage, an iconic curved glass and stainless steel building. Newcastle illuminates at night with a dazzling horizon of bars, pubs and clubs. Stop by the Old George, the oldest pub in Newcastle. One could rightly speculate that there’s been a few who’ve drunk themselves under the table since it was built in the 16th century. One thing Geordie’s know is how to have a ‘canny’ time!

Upon arrival, Mark introduced us to the the Wandering Duck, also know as ‘Rakiraki’ (Maori for duck): at 69ft long by 6ft10” wide, her interior design boasts an ingenious use of space. Homely, bright and accommodating, cosy bunk beds and hot showers are embellished with charming extras: a selection of games, a free-for-all guitar and an honesty bar including a real ale pump. According to the ‘ish’ clock on the kitchen wall, it was about time for us to set off. No rush and no schedules here though – whether we wanted to be actively involved or simply relax, it was up to us.

Seeking to slow down the pace from her busy London life, Georgie,

an Aussie backpacker was joining my friend Alison and I aboard the Duck. Buzzing with excitement, we gravitated to the front deck with our cuppas to shoot the breeze and watch the world glide by. Inquisitive tiny ducklings zipped around, closely followed by bobbing mother mallards. Statuesque herons eyed us nonchalantly from the bank. Enticed back inside by the delicious smells of Ruth’s cooking, we gathered around the dining table to tuck into a tasty dinner and share the day’s antics.

Quacking ducks and bleating lambs awoke me the next morning after a sound night’s sleep in a cosy blanket-laden bunk. Once everyone was roused and breakfasted, we

Hostel Review Descending from the sheep-

scattered, heathen hills of the Peak District we reached our starting point

in the picturesque Bugsworth Basin. Upon spotting the shiny, green ‘Wandering Duck’

floating serenely in the yellow evening light, excitement bubbled up for our water-born excursion.

Huge smiles greeted us – an indication of Mark and Ruth’s warm hospitality; a British couple who have been

running Britain’s only floating backpacker hostel for over a year.

Wandering Duck – Manchester We sent sultry Sarah to cruise the canals of the North. Canal boat, Wandering Duck, became her new floating home for three fabulous days.

laced up our boots for a ramble to Torrs Riverside Park. The ‘Millennium Walkway’- a metal pathway suspended halfway down the gorge

- provided a unique vantage point of a disused mill towering above and the gushing waters of the River Goyt below. As we cruised the canals to reach Marple for lunch, I finally felt brave enough to try my hand at steering; navigating past fellow canal boats and through narrow gaps. A scrumptious lunch and a couple of Ruth’s homemade heavenly chocolate brownies refuelled us for the afternoon. We had 16 locks to open and close – quite the fitness regime! Working together, we managed to sail through the final lock in good time; even a spattering of rain couldn’t dampen our high spirits. After hot showers and a hearty dinner, wine glasses were soon chinking... a just reward for the day’s exertion.

The next morning, a short walk on dry land led us to the 14th century Chadkirk Chapel in Romiley. Once back on board, we cruised towards Hyde, passing via dark tunnels and bluebell-lined canal ways through to an increasingly urban landscape. This was where our journey was sadly at an end. “Not all those who wander are lost”: J R R Tolkien’s quote rang true. I’d felt extremely settled; anchored by all the adventure, home comforts and like-minded companions.www.wanderingduck.co.uk

Snowdonia National Park encompasses 823 square miles of diverse majestic landscape. Mount Snowdon is its crown jewel – dominating the ancient horizon of North Wales at 3560 ft. 200 miles of epic coastline sweeps from the Llyn Peninsula down the mid-Wales coast.

All boasting heights of over 3000ft, 15 mountains known as the ‘Welsh 3000s’ host an assortment of Snowdonia action. You can pick ‘n’ mix between scenic walking routes, abseiling, horse riding,

mountain biking, quad biking, rock climbing and bouldering. If you’re still hungry for that rush, beeline for the refreshing waters of rivers and lakes within the National Park. Specialising in white water rafting, aerial zip lines, gorge walking, canyoning, cliff jumps and kayaking, every seeker is guaranteed a thrill. And to see the picturesque panorama from Snowdon without straining a muscle? Clamber aboard a train on the only UK ‘rack-and-pinion’ railway dating back to 1896, for a breezy ride up to its peak.

Dotted along the coast are sandy beaches, secluded bays and even dolphin watching boat trips. Wind down by sampling the ales of Wales and toast ‘the land of song’ in style.

CarmarthenshireAwash with spectacular aquatic vistas and green landscapes, Carmarthenshire’s dulcet Welsh tones are enticing travellers its way for some hillside adventure and brisk coastal air. After the vibrancy of the bustling city of Cardiff, a trip to the quaint village of Llansteffan is the perfect antidote. Nestled on the estuary of River Towy in South Wales, just beyond Swansea, Llansteffan is lined with implausibly golden beaches; the estuary is framed with a backdrop of rolling hills. Long

grasses dance in the wind and merge with an expansive beach along a stretch known as ‘The Green’. Those brave enough to cool off in the sea must remain aware of the estuary’s ever changing tide. The romantic ruins of Llansteffan Castle can be found perched upon the lofty cliff top. Snaking along the rocky headland, secluded ‘Scotts Bay’ offers more breathtaking views.

As a New Zealander and a rugby fan, a trip to Cardiff in Wales presents a unique challenge. We’re always told of the similarities between our two countries: the landscape, the people, the sheep and of course the rugby. Wanting to visit the best stadium in the world is balanced by remembering a dark day in our rugby history - humiliation by the French in the 2007 Rugby World Cup. So imagine my feelings when I look out my window from NosDa Hostel’s top floor and see the Millennium Stadium right in front of me!

I stayed here for the first time last summer and slept in a spacious 5 bed dorm on the top floor with great views of the stadium, river and city. After returning back twice more, Cardiff has now become my temporary base. I loved NosDa so

much that I convinced them to let me be part of the team by giving me a couple of bar shifts. The whole hostel set up impressed me but I

knew it was the staff who made this place really excel. They create an amazing atmosphere and that’s why I now feel lucky to work here. From the moment you arrive you’ll be greeted with a warm welcome, a free map of the city and a cup of tea in the guest kitchen. Breakfast is included in the price – a nice continental spread of cereals, toast, fruit, tea and coffee. There is also a public bar right next to reception with a good selection of local and familiar brews - and a bar menu with the best pizza outside of the Italian Riviera! The mixture of regular locals and short stay backpackers creates a fun night, with a lot of laughter and good tunes till the wee small hours.

On top of all this you’re 10 minutes away from most of the major sights in town - the Cardiff Castle, Millennium Stadium, the Old Arms Park, all the shopping centres and there’s even a water taxi stop outside for quick and fun access to Cardiff Bay.

So when you come to Cardiff, maybe see you at NosDa? We’ll give you some top tips for your stay and I’m always happy to serve you local beer or cider to quench your thirst. And yes, I’ve definitely banished those memories from 2007... www.nosda.co.uk

Many hold the view of Scotland being a land of fiery red hair, superb whisky and hearty meals. Few would associate the country with powdery sand beaches, idyllic bays, palm trees, volcanic pumice stone and… coconuts. But all of these things can be found in Scotland.

Balnakeil beach in the far north offers unparalleled sunsets, sand dunes and at times, clear blue skies. Although the beaches often lack the warm breeze of the Caribbean, there is a certain kind of expansiveness that stirs the soul. Find coconuts, pumice stone and other rarities, washed to shore from far away exotic lands.

Surprisingly, Cabbage Palms, Tree Fern and an unexpected mix of wildlife can be spotted in the Mull of Galloway, due to the warmth of the passing Gulf Stream. Whale watching on the northwest coast, around Gairloch, is a must! Minkes and Humpbacks are the most common whales spotted, but if you are lucky, Bottlenose whales and Orcas may appear.

Pease Bay in the northeast has recently seen a huge surfing explosion. Experts might also want to paddle out in Thurso East, where a huge swell pulls in the surfing competitions.

Whilst Amsterdam is often synonymous with its notorious red light district, hazy coffee shops, and raunchy museums, this free-thinking, liberal city also boasts fascinating architecture, meandering canals and delightful parks. Ramble around the different quarters of the city, discovering secret gardens, narrow houses and gazing upon monumental buildings such as Ann Frank’s house. As one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world, hiring a

two-wheeled friend for the day is highly recommended. The city’s flat terrain allows you to cycle around without hardly breaking a sweat. With around two million tourists flocking to Amsterdam every year to sample some of Europe’s finest ‘wacky backy’, taking some time-out from the smoggy atmosphere of coffee shops to embrace the capital’s aesthetically pleasing sights will leave you feeling just as high!

My week-long trip travelling Greece began with a two-day tour on board G.O. Tours, discovering Delphi and Meteora. Nestled into the Panassus mountain – at the heart of Greece’s mainland – Delphi is an archaeological site which dates back to around 1000 BC. As well as the Temple of Apollo, other ruins such as the Treasury of Athenians and the ancient theatre, add to the site’s antiquity. Ascending the steps, you can gaze down at thousands of years of history, set against a backdrop of the awe-inspiring Phocis valley.

That evening we stayed in a lovely hotel in Kalambaka: a quaint tourist town close to Meteora (meaning

‘hanging rocks’ in Greek) - I could even see the rocks from our rooftop terrace! The following morning, we set off to explore this fascinating site. Jutting out of the luscious trees were magnificent, dream-like rock-pillars made of natural sandstone, with ageless monasteries perched neatly on top with orange-tiled rooftops. Prior to the monasteries – built in the 14th century – a group of hermit monks inhabited Meteora, residing in the fissures of the rocks. The tour gave the opportunity to look inside two of the five wondrous monasteries: the ‘Holy Monastery of the Great Meteora’ and ‘St Barbara’, in which 16 nuns live.

Trip Review From serene landscapes to picture postcard villages, Greece is a treasure

trove of surprises with an abundance of breathtaking and mesmerising sights that’ll

captivate heart and mind. Bathe in crystal-clear seas or hike through flourishing mountains; Greece’s terrain

is ideal for any backpacker. With a history richer than Bill Gates, this majestic country provides the ultimate setting to explore its religious and ancient past, as well as its culture.

Once back in Athens, I explored its encapsulating history by visiting sites such as the Acropolis and the Temple of Zeus. The next day

I set sail across the Aegean Sea to Santorini - an island south of Greece famous for its astounding whitewashed buildings, blue dome-topped roofs and mesmerising sunset. Villa Manos became my temporary home, a wonderful hotel located just outside the vibrant town of Thira. Mrs Poppy, the hotelier, provided the warmest of welcomes, and the most pleasant stay.

Trips around the island were also available – in a day I explored Santorini’s volcanic island, swam in the hot springs, ate calamari pasta in Thirassia and made it to Oia before sunset. Oia exceeded my expectations; each picture I snapped looked postcard pretty.

The town’s pristine and pastel-coloured buildings were etched into the cliff-face; their walls decorated with radiant flowers. Although Oia isn’t the cheapest of places, you can still soak up the bliss and tranquility, whilst catching a glimpse of how the other half live.

By the end of my trip, I felt blown away by Greece. Its sheer beauty and richness truly captured my heart, and I can’t wait to go back again to uncover more of its magnificent treasures.

The intermingling of the old and the new is part of what makes Cologne such a diverse German city. Marvel at the gothic brute known as the Kölner Dom which dominates the Alstadt skyline. This region of the city also has beer houses fit enough to rival those in Bavaria.

Unlace your boots and unravel in the majestic, high-ceilinged common room of Pathpoint Cologne – www.pathpoint-cologne.de/en. Once a protestant church in a previous life, this hostel is an

architectural idyll and perfect for socialising with like-minded travellers. If you’re not out bathing in the vibrancy of Cologne’s nightlife or having a midnight stroll beside the Rhine, you can enjoy a barbeque on the garden terrace, or challenge a friend to a game of pool. Five-minutes from the central train station, their rooms boast en-suite bathrooms – a splash of convenience for a civilised and memorable stay.

Prague is a magnificent muddle of architectural styles from cubist, art nouveau, neoclassical, renaissance and baroque. And nestled beyond the city’s historic core are lively spirited bars and beer gardens for glugging trademark beers such as Staropramen and Pilsner Urquell. The city possesses a range of European flavours bundled into one, and was the home and inspiration for existentialist author Franz Kafka, who said of it “Prague never lets you go... this dear little mother has sharp claws”.

The composer Mozart was also gripped by the talons of Prague’s splendour, and some of his best operas were composed during his time living in the city. Czech director Milos Forman, famous for One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, created the BAFTA award winning film Armadeus,

about the composer, with scenes shot in the city. Feed your ears with a classical music experience of your own – you will find no shortage of venues. The Midday Classic Concert at Lobkowicz Palace is a perfect starting point. Dream along to both solo and ensemble pieces by Vivaldi, Mozart and Bach in this 17th century baroque concert hall.

If rolling hills, bigger crowds and more modern sounds are an appeal, take an excursion to the Trutnov Open Air Festival. Renowned as being the ‘Woodstock of the Czech Republic’, the festival originated in 1987. Founded on freedom and Trutnov’s underground culture, it prides itself on being a festival of ‘joy, summer, and meetings in the open air’.

Italy froths up a wealth of history, architecture, culture and art like a perfectly formed cappuccino. Complementing the ancient ruins and 47 World Heritage Sites, Italy also exhibits many gastronomical delights, paving the way for an eclectic mix of contemporary tastes and historical sights. Since 1987 Venice has been listed as a World Heritage Site. Founded in the 6th century and encapsulated in the middle of its lagoon, Venice is often referred to as the open-air museum. Hundreds of large canals form arteries feeding into the heart of Venice, allowing the romantic city built on 118 tiny islands to

seemingly float upon water. For a perfect recipe spend the day lost between the cultural maze of Venice and seek out the bursting queue of locals to Boutique del Gelato to taste one of Italy’s finest.

Adventure south to the World Heritage Site of Naples, surrounded by sleepy volcanoes and the steaming waters of Campi Flegre. L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele’s restaurant was projected onto the map by Julia Roberts tucking into her stone-baked pizza in Eat, Pray, Love. Here you can end your search for that delectable perfect pizza.
