The beginnings ...
• Abe was born on Feb. 12th, 1809 in a log cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky.
• He attended a frontier school no more than a year.
• He was mainly self educated although his whole life he said “git,” “thar,” and “heered.”

Abe’s Youth• Abe shone in his community
as a wrestler and a weight lifter. (He also was an amazing storyteller. He told of amusing and earthy stories.)
• As a young adult, he spent some time as a log splitter ... among other pioneer like things. :)
• Also he was such a sweetheart and disliked killing animals or harming them, even for food.

Mary Todd Lincoln.!
• She was born on Dec. 13, 1818. in Lexington, Kentucky.
• Born into the wealthy Todd family. (She grew up in a 14-room mansion.!)
• Was only 21 when she met Abe Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois.
• Abe proposed one year after their meeting in Springfield.

Mary Todd Lincoln.!
• Abe and Mary Todd were married on Nov. 4, 1842. (Many said that Lincoln married above him socially.)
• Her parents didn’t approve of the marriage because of Abe’s poor background.
• Mary Todd Lincoln’s enemy’s called her a “she wolf ” because she was so high strung.

for the state legislature and wins the election where he serves 2 successful terms.
• Sept. 9, 1836 - Lincoln received a license to practice law and became a lawyer in Illinois.
• March 3, 1837 - Abe makes his fist speech against slavery.

Order in the court!• June 18, 1840 - Lincoln
argues his first case before the IL Supreme Court.
• He was known as “Honest Abe” partly because he would refuse cases that we would have to suspend his conscience to defend.
• INTERESTING: Lincoln would use his stovetop top hat to store important letters, notes, and even bills in.

• He created a National Banking System with the National Banking Act of 1863. (This resulted in a national currency.)

• John Wilkes Booth came into the box, pulled a gun to Lincoln’s head, and pulled the trigger leaving Mary Todd screaming holding his body.

Fun Facts About Abe• First president to have a beard.
• He was the tallest President. (Stood at 6’4”)
• He ran a store in New Salem.
• As president, he owned cats, dogs, horses, and a turkey.
• One week before his death, he had a dream that someone in the White House died. When he asked who died, someone said the president and he saw his own face in the casket.
