The Original: Wiffle Ball

This ball offers a lot of versatility and offers a unique experience

with every pitch, hit and fielding chance. The variety of pitches

is endless. Risers, Curves, Sliders, Knuckleballs, Fastballs,

Change Up’s and many made up pitches. With this particular

piece of equipment, even someone without electric arm action

can be good.

The ball is a softer ball. A dirty ball is easier to pitch than a

brand new one. I find they are the safest ball to use for your

body and for items you will hit, such as homes, windows, cars

and unintended guests.

How far can you hit a Wiffle© Ball? With a neutral pitcher max

110 to 120 feet, equipment can affect this greatly.

There are easier balls to field as the ball will dip and dive it

really does not have a true ball flight and its light weight can

cause a fairly rapid movement in any direction. The ball itself

also can have serious spin. My best advice is two hand it when

possible. You can catch them barehanded without feeling a sting

most of the time. I don’t like using actual gloves but batting

gloves can make a big difference. Some leagues do all type of

things- make it your own! I could never catch one with my glove.

The biggest negative I see is weather; if it

is windy you can hit a ball that starts out

50 feet in front of you and land behind

you when it comes down. The other

negative is there is only one pitching

machine we found that will throw the

ball with any consistency.

PRO’s Con’s Glow In The Dark Wiffle Ball

These balls are clear balls you put a light into. The best feature is you can play at night. It offers a interesting and unique experience

They are very light and do not travel very

far. The light pack gives it weight but it

can spin awkwardly. We have had some

fun with it, but do not use it regularly in

our play.

Solid Wiffle Ball’s

These balls have no holes. These balls were probably made for

batting machine use. Which it is perfect for as you get consistent

pitches from a machine or thrown by hand.

The ball goes much farther than regular Wiffle© balls as there is

little resistance and for some reason these balls create a lot of

spin, an oddity we have witnessed is seeing many balls travel 70

- 80 feet at 5 or 7 feet high then elevate to 10 or 18 feet in

height and travel another 40+ feet. The ball in general goes a

good distance; these balls can be hit 150+ feet with regularity.

We enjoyed hitting the balls because of the distance and they

are less affected by wind. They also have a good sound and feel

off the bat. They are actually pretty durable from what we

experienced with them to date.

Catching this ball is very difficult and is

almost impossible without a glove. It also

makes sharp moves away, down and over

you and there are no clear lines on line

drives or Fly balls. Catching the ball

barehanded is more difficult as well and a

batting glove or regular glove can help. I

recommend this as a batting practice ball

only. A hidden effect of this ball is

because it is solid it will beat up and

flatten your bats. These balls will break

in cold weather. You can also get injured

using any solid ball.

EXCURSIONS-Journey-to-Health Wiffle-Ball

Stee Rike Three® Training Ball’s

The training ball: Because this ball is balanced with holes on both sides it is great for pitching machines. It has some movement but has a true flight off the bat and is the most like a baseball we have found. The ball is harder and heavier so it is not as affected by the wind. If you have a good, controllable fastball you will like this ball. You get typical movement again like a baseball more reliant on your arm action than the design of the ball. Fielding is like a baseball, true lines to the ball, not many crazy dips. Hitting the ball is true and the ball goes a good distance, 125 plus foot homers are possible and consistent. They are fairly durable and great for batting machines. They sometimes dent, but pop back into shape.

Although durable, once they crack in the middle they are done. For fielding I recommend a batting glove because they are harder balls and will sting your hands on hard hit balls. They also will sting if they hit your body. So be careful with them. These balls beat up your bat’s they will create a flat spot (which isn’t always a bad thing) however many leagues include major league baseball prohibit flat bats. We hit these balls with normal bats and the balls durability goes down quickly. The package says good for wood and aluminum bats but our experience says otherwise.

Curve Ball: Pitching this ball is a blast as it moves! It is a hard and heavy ball and you can make this ball rise curve and do a lot. Don’t miss your spot though because it goes a mile when hit well. We have hit this ball 160+ feet on many occasions and it gets there in a hurry. This ball travels far and does not play as true as a training ball.

This ball doesn’t feed great from a batting machine and they are not super durable. If you hit one on the end of the bat the ball does dent and once dented it doesn’t always pop back into place. They also crack after a good amount of use. We love the ball because they go far. However as stated above, play with batting gloves to avoid the sting and they beat up the bats. See above for health warnings and flat bat warnings.

You can buy these balls in two places. Online or at Wal Mart, I have not seen them anywhere else. There Web Site is: Stee Rike 3 Stee Rike 3 also has a leaf blowing batting machine and ball picker which is worth the look.

POLYBALL’s: A Poly Ball is a Ball that is like Swiss cheese, baseball size with 18 to 30 mini holes in it. These are like nats on a hot summer day lots of brands you can find in Dick’s Sporting Goods, Wal-Mart and other places. I bought a handful of different brands then it after spending hundreds of dollars on balls that go 60 - 70 feet to give them the squeeze test. Grab a ball if you can squeeze it easily then it is not going to go far. Below are ones I used and rated: Jugg’s Bull Dog Balls

This ball has a true flight and pitch. It works great out of a pitching machine. If you have a small field they are okay. It isn’t too soft, but not as hard as a Training ball, it will beat your bat up pretty good over time. We like the consistency of the ball. The balls are fairly durable, they will crack and split over time and the color fades. These balls were made for the light flight pitching machine and work well with it. We have hit these balls with plastic, wood and aluminum. Plastic is best because they don’t go anywhere otherwise. I cannot attest to the durability with hard bats.

Our problem is the distance that they go. You are not going to hit this ball beyond 110 feet with any consistency. These are not forever balls either, we get 100 new ones every year and lose 30% to splitting and cracking.

Pickle Ball

The Pickle Ball is the most durable poly ball on the market. This is an extra heavy-duty plastic ball featuring a thicker wall structure and a design with a "parting line" which is considered stronger than a regular seam - to hold up far longer than standard poly balls. Ideal for batting practice and for pitching machines.

This is a HARD ball. It can injury you or others and beat your bat up pretty good. It is however very durable.

The Rest of the Balls: Eastern, Adidas, PA Sports and others all have polyballs. You can find them anywhere and frankly I say save your money. The review in them are all the same, the balls break easily

and go about 70 feet at max. You will occasionally tag one 85 - 90 feet with the wind. If you have a super small space they can make sense, or little kids 4 – 8 years old. For Adults or leagues with teenagers I don’t recommend using them.

You can by these two products at: www.webbal.com , you can also get Juggs Balls directly from Juggs or other suppliers.

Junk Ball

Amazing Design. The exclusive Dial a Pitch feature allows anyone to throw curves, sliders, even knuckleballs. It’s easy! Just turn the dial to adjust the air flow through the ball and aim the unique scuff marks! I love this ball, you can have a lot of fun with it and you can really have a trick or two up your sleeve with the dial a pitch part.

The ball travels well, I don’t think you should throw it with the holes closed! It goes a mile.

Durability is my question. We debuted this ball last fall and used it and it dented. However it popped back into place each time. I do not know over long term how it will do.

SOLID BALL’s All Solid Ball’s have a few of same qualities. #1 They are hard, if you are too close and pitch one, a come backer will sting. They typically go much farther then a ball that has some wind resistance’s or softer shell. The harder your solid ball the farther it goes. Eastern Training Ball

The Black Eastern Bat comes with a Solid ball. If you want to have BP this ball is fun, it goes a mile. We hit this ball 225 Feet. Both my son and I hit one out of a little league park from home plate. We lose them so we don’t know how long they last.

I would not play a game with these balls or pitch them from anything less than 60 feet away. They fly off the bat they are rock solid so be careful. These balls are hard to find when sold separately, I have found them at sports authority in packs of 6.

Franklin Solid Ball

This is a newer ball made for a Franklin pitching machine. It is a diamond texture to it. The ball is hard, and will go far on a line and much like Eastern Balls they never stay around long enough for us to realize the durability. Typically the shelf life is not long. Once the equator gets a crack its over.

The ball does a odd thing, on pop ups on fly balls it spins backwards. It will travel 110 feet and spin backwards on decline to land 70 feet from home. It must have to do with spin, weight ratio.

This is a readily available machine, you can find this at shopzilla and in many retail outlets. Pickle and Wiffle also make Solid Balls.

Bats: Who doesn’t love a bat? A bat is an extension of your baseball personality. You know right away from the feel of the bat if you like it or not. Some bats feel great out of the box, some need some tweaks. The great thing is unlike 10 years ago there are many options. When I played in the 70’s and early eighties we had the yellow bat and a big red Fred Flintstone Bat only. Now there are many options. You can find dozens on line, at stores and some bats are expensive costing as much as $160. The idea in this part of the guide is to review the bats, performance and what adjustments you can make to the bat. Wiffle Ball Bat:

Very durable bat and it requires you hit the ball solid. It is the standard of most tournaments you will play in. As for distance there is no question you can hit it pretty good. A 80 foot Homerun and with a yellow bat that is about right, you can hit it 110 feet but not often. I do think if your goal is to help teach your kid to hit the yellow stick it will offer them a better training game. The older bat which you can find on eBay was made from a harder plastic and had more carry. These bats are legal at tourneys.

For me I don’t use it. The main reason is, it doesn’t feel like a bat. It is to light, the handle is to thin and it is not long enough for me to hit with. I like a big knob at the end of the handle because when you swing 80 MPH that little knob allows for way to many flying bats. Despite my dislike for the Bat, if you are going to play in tournaments, you are going to have to get used to it because most only allow this bat. Many leagues are the same way.

You can Purchase the Bat online at: http://stores.shop.ebay.com/EXCURSIONS-Journey-to-Health The Eastern Pro Stix 1100

This bat is my favorite bat. It feels like a bat and comes with a solid ball (previously noted). That bat looks like it has a tapered handle. It is 34 inches long and has gold stripes. It hits the balls the best of all bats and has excellent carry when the bat is new. I don’t think you will find a better bat. The Pros of the bat are its price and performance. You can do a few adjustments to the bat to make it even better. Add a leather grip or tape to the handle. You can also customize this bat or “cork it”, which I detail in the corking section.

The only con I found is that the bat can flatten when you hit the harder training balls. It is a very light bat, so adding a dowel helps a little but it is not necessary. Also finding the bat can be a challenge. Your best bet is a retail store such as Sports Authority.

I have found this bat online at www.baseballrampage.com, otherwise it is not easy to find online.

Louisville Slugger C 271 (Ken Griffey) Bat

This is a black 34 Inch Bat, modeled after the C271 Wood Bat. This bat is close to the Eastern bat. It is slightly smaller and it hits well. With the harder balls it does not flatten as much with is a plus. It is worth a try for your taste if you find one at your local store try it out.

It is not as on par with the Easton bat. The distance and feel just isn’t the same, I would say 10 less feet than the Easton Bat is a fair assessment. The handle narrows too much and we have snapped this bat at the handle.

Screwball Bat (Loco Bat) This is a hybrid bat. What I mean by that is the “Screwball Bat” is plastic part of the Loco Bat. Loco add’s a handle to the bat thus customizing it and reselling it. So there are three reviews, as www.wiffleusa.com also offers a form of the screwball/loco bat. If you don’t have the ability to perform the customizing task(I detail how to do this later in book) yourself the bat may be worth the $25. It is not cost prohibitive to buy. But you can buy the bat for $4, a dowel for $4 to $5 dollars and screws for a dollar and some tape for the handle. If you google the screwball© bat you will see many companies selling it.

15

The Screwball bat is a blue bat that has an extended barrel, the bat is 30 inches long. This bat can be found at www.morleyathletic.com for about $4.oo per bat. The performance of the bat itself is great. This bat hits the ball as long and deep as any other bat I have used to date, 110 to 125 Feet is pretty realistic for homerun balls.

As with every model as they come from same shell, they get beat up with harder balls. The actually bat is 30 inch’s long which I find to short. It is a personal preference, if you can hit with a 30 inch bat this is not a con for you. So customizing the bat can be a challenge if you don’t know how to do it or lack the ability.

Loco offers a wood handle that they insert into the handle after cutting the plastic handle off at an inch from the barrel. The handle is excellent and has a huge knob at the end.

The wood handle is hard to hold, you need to tape it. The biggest problem with this bat is it can flatten and the bat over time can separate from the handle. Loco extends it to 36 inches which is too long, 34 inches is perfect size so making your own is a good idea.

Wiffleusa Bat. I have not used their version of the bat.

The handle looks odd in pictures.

Moonshot Bats:

These bats are made from Carbon Fiber materials. After recently speaking with the owner he informed me that he has a newer technology. There is no question in my mind these are the best feeling bats you can buy. They have some weight to them, 9 to 11 ounces. They have a nice leather handle and simply feel like a bat in your hands. You can select your own length, color, weight and style. There are two different ‘styles’ and three different products you can buy each style in. The Enforcer is an extended barrel bat. I am just not a fan of the “Softball” style bat. The Revolution is tapered like a bat. I like this one much more. Because of the cost of this bat I am going to give you my History of the purchases: I have bought 6 Bats from Moonshot. The first two, were black bats one Revolution and one Enforcer. They hit and hit well, this was in 2006. They were the best bats I hit with, hitting hard line drives and majestic homeruns. These bats however didn’t last as we used harder balls then they were intended for and they got broken and destroyed. Although this is now noted on the moonshot website, at the time, it was not. I then ordered a re-enforced bat. It was a Brown bat I still have today. It holds up great to harder balls. However, the bat is like dead wood in your hand and there is no noise after you hit the ball. The carry is not great and it only works with harder balls. Over all it was not great. I don’t blame the company, this was custom built and it has not broken in 2 years use.

Page 17: Back Yard Ball Free Catalog

17

In 2007 I bought one of each bat offered at the time. SCX, EFX and CFX I used each bat extensively for a few months and at the end of the day I can’t say these bats performed any better than any other bat. I didn’t hit any more or less homeruns, I didn’t hit the ball any deeper and if anything, I think there were a few more pop ups. The bats also are made of a material that will break down over time so they are not a forever bat.

The owner is very responsive and will work with you. He is a player and is into his craft. The bat feels as good as any bat you will ever hold as I detailed. The new SCX which is upgraded to a 2.75 Barrel is a really good bat.

The bat gives you average performance from my use, which leads into the Con so to speak. I don’t doubt the cost is in line with the work needed to make these bats as they are custom made. However, the performance is not in line with the price. Cons: The cost is $100 to $159 per bat plus S&H.

If you are a serious player, it may be worth a try but don’t expect to hit the ball 15 more feet because of the cost. Some leagues and tourneys allow this bat. It they do it makes sense to at least look into it. They may allow this but not an Easton Bat for example. As I stated before, the rules are all different from league to league and tourney to tourney. www.moonshotbat.com

The Flat Bat which is a novelty bat. It is 24 inches long.

It and is terrible to hit with even if you are fooling around. It comes in a lot of colors. It could be a cute bat for little kid because the flat side my help them a little.

They are fairly cheap bats; they are 30 inches and cost about $7 to $8 each. You can get these cheap by the case if you like them.

These bats are no good for serious play. They are very weak bats that could only hit the soft Poly Balls. They are black and say sports bat. I have had no luck driving the ball with this bat at all.

Great bat, super, super durable. Hits all the balls well and I have not seen it dent or flatten in a season of use. I found this online and bought two and we do not regret it at all! The bat is 30 inches, which is too short; it has a taped handle which is cool. This bat has the extended barrel. Like the Ripken bat I had to extend the handle three inches and it worked great.

The only con is the bat is to short. So you need to customize the bat to extend the handle.

There is no secret sauce to finding these bats. Google Cramer Bats, I did not find a web site exclusive to them. Many Web Sites sell this bat.

Sandlot Bat and Ball Combo

This product is available at Dick’s Sporting Goods. The bat is a black plastic bat that comes with a diamond ball. The bat is about 30 inch’s long pretty durable. The ball is like a solid ball with several diamond holes. The ball goes a mile, when hit well.

The bat is to short at 30 inch’s, it is okay for little kids but not adults. The hard ball it comes with can be dangerous. Limited supply of this equipment.

Junk Ball Bat

I am not a fan of this bat because I don’t like the feel of the bat.

This bat relies on you hitting the hard plastic sweet spot or the ball goes nowhere. The material is not durable. They did so well with the ball, I am surprised the bat was built so poorly.

The Fred Flintstone Bat This is the typical bat pictured below. No love for this bat. To big, to loud and honestly the ball doesn’t always go farther. Although they can get there a little faster sometimes. You can pretty much get one of these bats from a dozen manufactures. This is for someone who can’t hit or a little kid.

Quick Ball Bat This bat may no longer be made.

The bat comes with 6 very hard ball’s smaller then a baseball bigger than Golf Ball. The bat is 30 inches, and has extended barrel. This bat is great if you extend the handle a few inches.

Other than the 30 inch size the bat is great.

Look on Ripken Baseball Web Site for bat and balls. Foam Bat’s There are a few types but there is one bat that was worth putting in this guide.

There is a 32 Inch and 29.5 Inch bat. They are Japanese T Ball Bat’s. They weight 18 ounce’s and have a grip with a knob at the end of the bat. It works great with a hard or solid ball. I expected the bat to break or lose foam but that has not happened yet. The hard balls can go 120 – 125 feet. It does take some pop away so it is a good neutralizer. I have really enjoyed hitting with it.

Aluminum Bat’s The best for last, the JMX Bat, which you can buy from www.WiffleUp.com Web Site is the best bat I have used to date. This bat feels like a bat, a perfect leather grip,

nice weight and balance. It is a longer bat and helps you cover those nasty outside pitch’s. You get some extra distance from this bat.

The distance is balanced with the fact it if don’t hit it square you don’t get a lot of carry. The only real con is the price at about $60 a bat. I feel it is worth it.

www.jtlbatcompany.com, I have not used these two bats. They cost around $45 each.

In my Book Backyard Ball I review how to customize the bat’s. I suggest you read that book to learn how to install dowels, grips and tape to take the bat to the next level.

Batting Machine’s: I have used most of these machines but not all. Column one will explain machine and where to buy it and column two is the con’s if any.

Lite Flight Machine is a great machine. It throws the Official Wiffle Ball and is the only machine to do so. It throws 3 different pitches from a right handed pitcher and left handed pitcher. It can throw pretty fast and accurate. You need to get the battery pack and auto feeder for the machine. It was made to throw Bull Dog balls and throws them well. www.webball.com

There is no real con’s to the machine; it works great for Backyard Sports.

Zooka machine is a Machine that use’s air compression to throw the balls. It can vary pitch speed without the batter knowing. It has a rechargeable battery in machine. You need to buy the feeder separately. The machine is great for fielding practice as well it is versatile. www.zooka.com

The feeders main drawback is the balls are slightly to light and the balls do not always feed down. Also, you can’t plug the machine in, once the battery dies you need to recharge it. You can buy a extra battery but it makes no sense because the auto feeder takes its plugged in spot so you can’t operate both. The cup wore out on us, quickly.

Juggs Toss Machine, this is the best toss machine we have used. This machine must have tossed over a million balls in 3 years and finally wore out. It toss’s all balls and is pretty consistent. Highly recommended. jkpsports

The flaw is it is spring loaded and bounce’s and can move a lot if you don’t secure it down somehow. Also, try to use same type of balls, otherwise for some reason it fouls the toss and a handful of balls pop out at once.

http://www.kodiaksports.com Soft Toss Machine

Wheeler Dealer, this is a toss machine. It has several adjustments and knob’s. It is a rechargeable machine.

I do not recommend this machine for a few reasons. It makes no sound so you don’t know when pitch’s come. Secondly because of the system it is inconsistent in height and you need to be to close to machine. Also, it broke two months into owning the machine.

There are many more machines out there. I suggest you really research the product first. Remember Whiffle is not a Wiffle Ball. Very few machines can throw a Wiffle Ball.

Baseball stars across the country are stepping up to support a new children’s book, A Glove of Their Own. The book aims to teach children the value of sharing what you have with those in need, And World Baseball Out Reach Donations is proud to be one of the charities that will benefit from sales of the book.

Bob Salomon, the head of the movement promoting this book said “As a little league coach and proud father of two, I am fortunate enough to be passionate about the “pay it forward” or “give it back” mindset that has slowly been catching on throughout corporate America. A Glove of Their Own is a children’s picture book that personifies this mentality. It utilizes baseball, and an underprivileged group of children's childhood experience. Their love of the game is not defined by the equipment they don’t have but rather the passion and dreams that they do have.”

The book was inspired by a birthday party held for one of the writers, Debbie Moldovan’s, children. In place of gifts, guests were asked to donate baseball equipment for children who normally do without. A Glove of Their Own has caught the attention of big-hearted baseball players including Pitching Legend Tommy John.Robb Quinlan, Jack Hannahan, Sean Casey and Craig Biggio.

Copies can be ordered now at A Glove of Their Own website. Be sure to click on the Charity code WBO-243 from the drop-down box and World Baseball Outreach Donations will receive three dollars a book from all sales coded. THANKS!

With each purchase of this wonderful children’s book, Wisconsin Youth Sports Donations will receive a $3.00 contribution. When ordering, please select WBO-243 as the charity code.
