Hold up the number of fingers that represent the second addend on the other hand.

Counts how many fingers in all to get your sum.

Write down the number of green stars to represent the first addend.

Write down the number of yellow stars to represent the second addend.

Add together how many stars are in all in the model to get the sum.

Example 2 + 2 = 4

Using a Number Line to Add

Example: 5 + 4 = 9

Start at zero and jump five spaces because this number represents the first addend.

Jump four more spaces because it is plus four and this number represents the second addend.

The number that you land on is the sum of your addition sentence.
