The Association’s planning committee approved taking the lead in a community-wide, back-to-school service project last August. Dr. Basden, the R-II superintendent, provided a list of to-do’s such as pulling weeds in landscaped areas, washing windows, picking up trash, etc. A small but mighty group of Association members worked together to assist in “spiffing up the building and grounds” before the school year began. We made a dif-ference and it was noticed by staff and the public.

The Association is sponsoring a project to digitize all Louisiana school yearbooks, formal class photo-graphs, and class composite pictures and put these online for viewing at both the Louisiana High School and Alumni Association's websites. Thus far there are six ALAMOs, those from 1924, 1951, 1964, 1965, 1966 and 1968, scanned and available for viewing. You may access these from the AL-AMO yearbook link from the school district’s site at www.louisianarii.org/yearbook or from our website under the Services tab.

The committee has established scanning standards which will provide high-quality archival scans and not take too long to download. We invite anyone with a good, flatbed, color scanner (or photo-graphic-quality MFP printer/scanner/copier) to scan the ALAMO from their graduation year and/or other Louisiana school pictures and yearbooks. To get information on the standards and other instructions on how to scan your class’s yearbook, contact Walter Logan, 573-754-5355 or [email protected].

LHS ALAMO Scanning Project Update

Cookbook fundraiser is successful! October. With a great deal of “salesmanship” by the steer-ing committee members, all were sold by February. That’s good as we don’t have any left to gather dust and cut into our profits. On the flip side, it’s unfortunate for those who want to buy them now. The planning commit-tee has decided to wait to consider doing another one.

We want to thank everyone who submitted recipes as well as those who purchased books. A big “Thank You!” goes out to Sandy Sitton Niemeyer who spearheaded the project. The Association realized a profit of over $3,000 which will allow us to consider additional ways to support our school district, its staff and students.

Last year the planning commit-tee decided to create and sell a cookbook of recipes submitted by LHS alumni and friends. There were a total of about 350 recipes including some from local restaurants of yes-teryear and a brief school his-tory.

There were a total of 328 cookbooks received in early

LHS Year in Review

Greetings!!

I appreciate this forum to keep you abreast of the great things that are happening at LHS. I have been the Principal at the high school for five years now. My mother was in the LHS class of 1958, Martha Sue Zook.

The 2012-13 school year brought great accomplishments in the areas of academics, athletics, and service to our com-munity.

We continue to offer students a wide variety of course selections. Each year we increase offerings in dual credit coursework. Students have the potential to leave LHS with 24 hours of college credit. This year we were officially designated as an A+ school. A+ is a state scholarship program that provides qualified students with paid tuition for their first two years of post-secondary education. We also received a “distinction in performance” accreditation this year. We have not achieved the rating since 2007.

Athletically, the Bulldogs had an outstanding year. LHS is fortunate to have motivated student athletes and a great group of dedicated coaches. Some highlights were as follows: Golf team won the conference, the District title and was runner up at the State Tournament, we had four All State Athletes, 22 All District Athletes, 23 All Conference Athletes, 9 All Conference Choir Members, and 2 All Conference Band Members.

None of these accomplishments would be possible without the dedication of the athletes and coaches; the support of the Bulldog Boosters and parents; and the commitment from the Louisiana R-II Board of Education.

Whenever possible, we give the students at LHS opportunities to give back to the community that makes everything possible. LHS has an active chapter of the National Honor Society. This year, as in the past, they provided service to the Pike County Memorial Hospital, the Twin Pike Family Y, the Louisiana Chamber of Commerce, as well as donations and drives on behalf of area non-profits. Our students volunteered with the Department of Conservation at Eagle Days. Our guidance counselor administers a class called Student Community Outreach Services. Students enrolled in the class have opportunities to serve as classroom aides in the Louisiana Middle and Elementary Schools.

Our doors are always open to Alumni and Friends. If you are in town, please stop by and see us. Depending on how long it has been, you may notice significant changes. All of our facilities are top notch in the area and in the Confer-ence. I would enjoy giving anyone interested a tour of the grounds. It is all of your hard work, contributions, and accomplishments that make LHS what it is today.

I hope to see you soon.

Former LHS Principal Dies In last year’s newsletter we mentioned a for-mer LHS principal, Galen Lankford, was turning 100 years young in October. We regret to say we learned he passed away in March after being hospitalized with flu and later falling causing head injuries.

LHS Homecoming The traditional homecoming parade will be on Friday, October 18 at 2:00 p.m. The Louisiana Bulldogs will take on the Centralia Panthers with the kickoff at 7:00 p.m. The FFA Chapter spon-sors a BBQ fundraiser before the game from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. We hope you will join us and make the game part of your weekend plans!
