PhD position on Plant-Soil Feedbacks, SLU-Umeå

Project 1: Explore and harness lignin depolymerization by fungi and

Project 2: Lipid production from lignocellulosic biomass by oleaginous yeasts Heltid vid Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology, Uppsala. Contact: Jerry Ståhlberg, Jerry.Stå[email protected] Last date for application 2016-08-01. Reference number: SLU ua 2450/2016.

Project 1 aims to explore the genomes and secretomes of potent wood and humus degrading fungi towards a consolidated roadmap to the chemistry and molecular biology of lignin depolymerisation, and to identify compounds for novel biotechnical solutions to lignocellulose biorefinery. The lignin matrix is a major barrier to degradation, in industry as well as in nature, and separation of cellulose and hemicellulose from lignin is a major bottleneck to efficient lignocellulose utilisation. Higher fungi have evolved chemistries to depolymerise lignin and overcome the barrier. They are the major wood decomposers in nature and thus play a key role in the global carbon cycle. Despite this, the mechanisms are not well understood and the function of many of their genes is unknown. This project will include genomics and proteomics studies, advanced NMR and mass spectrometry techniques for biomass and lignin analyses, molecular cloning and heterologous expression of enzyme-encoding genes in yeast and/or filamentous fungi, gene silencing in fungi, and protein structure studies by X-ray crystallography.

Project 2 investigates the conversion of all components of lignocellulose (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin) and glycerol, a residue from biodiesel production, into lipids, using oleaginous yeasts that can accumulate 70% and more of their biomass as lipids. Lipids are advantageous to carbohydrates and ethanol, because they are more energy dense, and because they can more readily replace fossil oil in existing petrochemical industry processes for production of fuels and chemicals. The fatty acid profiles vary between different yeasts. Some produce lipids suitable for conversion to biodiesel, wheareas others may be rich in e.g. omega-3 and poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and useful for fish feed and food production. This project will involve advanced fermentation techniques, biomass analyses, biochemical and molecular methods, and geneomics technologies.

The research group is highly international with extensive research collaboration locally and internationally. Our laboratories are well equipped for general chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology work, and also in terms of advanced heavy instrumentation, such as fermentors and bioreactors; NMR; mass spectrometry; X-ray crystallography; confocal, electron and atomic force microscopy. The research environment will provide insights into a broad spectrum of aspects ranging from biology, genomics, bioinformatics, to biochemistry, chemistry, analyses and process engineering, and will provide extended contact networks both within academia and with industry, in benefit of education, training and career opportunities for the young researchers.

Qualifications: An eligible candidate should have an MSc degree in subjects relevant for the position, such as one within Microbiology, Biochemistry, or Molecular Biology. Well-documented knowledge about filamentous fungi and yeasts, preferably non-conventional yeasts, experience in molecular manipulation of filamentous fungi and yeasts, training in microbial cultivation using fermenters are highly valued merits. Previous experience with laboratory work relevant to the project is desirable; in particular experience in molecular cloning, heterologous gene expression, genomics technologies, lipid extraction from microorganisms and various types of biochemical characterization of lipids (both mainly for the second project) are highly valued merits. Experience in project-related topics such as biofuels and/ or food science would be desirable. The working language in the research group is English; excellent communication skills in English orally and in writing are therefore required. We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate interested in academic research on the international bioenergy research arena, and we put great emphasis on personal characteristics of the successful applicant

Forms for funding or employment: Employment as PhD student 4 years

SLU is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

A person has basic eligibility for third cycle education if he or she has taken a second cycle qualification or has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second cycle education.

PhD position in Floodplain Biogeochemistry

Inviting applications for a fully funded PhD positions in the Soil and Microbial Biogeochemistry group at the University of Massachusetts—Amherst.

Project: Organic Matter Mineralization and Metal Cycling During Flood Plain Evolution Research: The successful candidate will conduct research into the metabolic constraints on the biogeochemical cycling of organic matter within floodplains. The overarching goal of this research is to decipher the coevolution of organic carbon and metal chemistry within floodplains, and its resulting determinant of carbon oxidation rates and metal contaminant fate and transport. This research is focused on the Colorado and associated River basins where a legacy of mining has left floodplain aquifers contaminated with uranium and other metals. The candidates will combine experiments in laboratories with field sampling and long-term monitoring to examine the key microbial processes responsible for the cycling of carbon and associated metals. Candidates will have the excellent opportunity to apply cutting-edge synchrotron-based spectroscopy/microscopy, mass spectrometry, and molecular biology techniques to study the microbial transformations of carbon and metals. This research will be conducted in collaboration with a supportive team of scientists at UMass-Amherst, Stanford University, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Qualifications: Applicants with Bachelor degree in soil science or a related field (environmental science, geoscience, microbiology, or environmental chemistry) are encouraged to apply. We expect the student to have a general interest in fundamental biogeochemical mechanisms in soils, and to creatively integrate his or her own ideas within the broader framework of the project. Location: UMass Amherst, the flagship campus of the University of Massachusetts system, sits on nearly 1,450-acres in the scenic Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, 90 miles from Boston and 175 miles from New York City. The campus provides a rich cultural environment in a rural setting close to major urban centers. Application: Interested candidates are asked to send their CV, copies of Bachelor and/or Master degrees (including academic transcripts), and a list of two potential references (including full contact addresses). These materials, and inquiries for further information, should be sent to Dr. Marco Keiluweit ([email protected]) by July 15, 2016, or until the position is filled. The start date is negotiable, but ideally Sept 2016 or Jan 2017.

PhD Fellowship - Wittgenstein and free will - 3yrs - KULeuve

As part of the research project, 'A Wittgensteinian account of free will', funded by the FWO (Research Foundation - Flanders), the Institute of Philosophy at KU Leuven (Belgium) is offering a full-time position at the predoctoral level for a three year period, starting October 1, 2016. The successful candidate will prepare a doctoral dissertation on the topic of the research project under supervision of the project's main investigators, Prof. Stefan Rummens of the Centre for Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy, and Prof. Stefaan Cuypers of the Centre for Logic and Analytic Philosophy. He or she will be integrated into the workings and research activities of both of these research centres. The salary for this position is around 1.800EUR per month (after tax). Project: The research project aims to apply Wittgenstein's therapeutical method to the long standing philosophical problem of free will. It investigates the hypothesis that the question whether free will can exist in a deterministic universe constitutes an example of a meaningless question which should be therapeutically dissolved rather than solved. In its critical dimension, this project therapeutically engages with the ongoing academic debate on free will in the analytic tradition and aims to identify how and to what extent this debate is marred by an unwarranted 'metaphysical' use of the key concepts of 'freedom' and 'determinism'. In its reconstructive dimension, the project focuses on the legitimate or 'everyday' use of these concepts and attempts to show that if 'meaning is use' - as Wittgenstein would have it -, then the idea of a possible conflict between determinism and free will cannot be meaningfully formulated. Profile and requirements:The candidate must · have obtained a master's level degree in philosophy before taking up the position · show potential as an academic researcher · be motivated to work in an international academic environment · be able to demonstrate his/her affinity with the topic of the research project · have an excellent command of the English language · be willing to carry out minor educational and organisational duties · be willing to live in Leuven or its vicinity (Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp,...)

The project - Summary in layman's terms Note: shortlisted candidates will receive the full version of the project. Jim Woodward's interventionist theory of causation, which starts from the intuition that causal relations are relations which are potentially exploitable for manipulation and control, has become increasingly popular in philosophy of science in the past years. One of its unique selling propositions is that it dovetails nicely with scientific practice, including the psychological sciences, and with people's everyday causal reasoning. Interventionism has recently been invoked in two distinct yet related philosophical discussions. First, several authors have used it to guard mental causation against the epiphenomenalist's causal exclusion argument. Yet these promising endeavours have strongly been criticized by Michael Baumgartner in a series of papers. The second discussion concerns Carl Craver's account of constitutive relevance in mechanisms. Even though his account is inspired by Woodward's interventionist theory of causation, Craver insists that constitutive relevance relations can not be causal. This gives rise to a number of problems. The central goal of this project is to find a unifying solution to these related - yet distinct - problems. The central research hypothesis is that this can be done by giving up the twin assumptions that supervenience and constitutive relevance cannot be causal. This is a plausible solution, since we have good independent reasons for interpreting these relations as bidirectional - bottom-up and top-down - causal relations. Information for applicants Applicants should send each of the following (preferably in a single pdf-file) to [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> by July 3, 2016: * a motivation letter (between 1 and 3 pages) * a CV * a list of publications and talks (if applicable) * graduate transcripts (candidates who do not have a master's degree by the time of application must specify by when they expect to obtain their degree) * the topic of their master's dissertation * one writing sample (e.g., a part of the master thesis, an essay, etc.) * the names and contact details of two possible referees (no recommendation letters necessary) Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview (in vivo or via skype).

Post-Doctoral Research Positions

Postdoctoral Research Associate: Adaptive Selection of Great Lakes Restoration Project Investments

The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) is a large US Federal program aimed at protecting and restoring the largest system of surface freshwater in the world. Participating federal agencies are committed to implement a science-based “adaptive management framework” to prioritize ecosystem problems to be targeted, select projects to address the problems, and assess the effectiveness of projects that are carried out. The framework describes an iterative process of planning, project implementation, monitoring of restoration effectiveness and ecosystem health, and prioritization of ecosystem threats. The framework further outlines a general process by which learning feedbacks should be incorporated into future iterations of project selection. Position Description: We seek a postdoctoral research associate to lead development of an adaptive approach to the selection of restoration project portfolios. The research will draw heavily on principles of decision analysis, in which the valuation of decision outcomes and the building of models to predict those outcomes are co-equal endeavors. The incumbent will work with decision stakeholders from the participating agencies to frame the decision making context, identify restoration priorities, characterize uncertainties in predicting project outcomes, and design systems of monitoring to assess satisfaction of project goals. The incumbent’s work will
