STUDY WITH INTERNATIONAL MASTERS OF JAZZ

The department teachers include all the best Finnish jazz artists. In addition to the five permanent lecturers and one professor, the jazz department has over fifty part-time teachers.

International guests are an integral part of the department, with dozens of visiting artists hosted every year. For example, during 2016 Sibis Jazz had over 50 visitors, including names like Joe Lovano, Tim Hagans, Vince Mendoza, Jim Beard, Robert Hurst, Chris Potter, Walter Smith III, Billy Hart, Lee Konitz, Lars Jansson, Mark Turner, Peter Evans, Gregory Hutchinson, Reuben Rogers and Aaron Goldberg.

Our master class activities have made the department well known on the international scene, attracting more degree and exchange students from abroad each year. The Nordic Master in Jazz programme (NOMAZZ), introduced in 2008, has also seen a growing number of international students. Within the NOMAZZ programme, the Sibelius Academy collaborates with two other music academies – Stockholm and Aarhus. All studies in the jazz department can be conducted in English.

All jazz graduates have the opportunity to apply for the Sibelius Acad-emy’s doctoral programmes. The three programmes available are the Arts Study Programme, the Research Study Programme and the Applied Study Programme.

ENJOY THE BEST FACILITIES AND AN ACTIVE JAZZ LIFE IN HELSINKI

The jazz department is situated in the newly built Musiikkitalo (Helsinki Music Centre), right in the heart of the city of Helsinki. Musiikkitalo offers state-of-the-art studios, practice rooms and six different concert halls for concerts and festivals.

In addition to its educational responsibilities, Sibis Jazz is a key unit and a nexus of expertise in the Finnish jazz scene. The department collaborates closely with several other central organi-sations in the field, striving to develop jazz music by offering new opportunities through active participation.
