Expectation Setting • I am a Management Consultant by trade. I focus on Strategic Issues for my
Clients. I coach and mentor Senior Executives & Board Members in their quest for Strategic Success.
• I hate Hype & Manipulation. I am here for a “Fact-based Discussion”. • My quest is to help each of you find Clarity of Thought on the virtues of Top-
Down Data Leadership. • I want you to leave here feeling Empowered to Help Create “A Predictive
Enterprise”. • I want you as potential Data Leaders to become Fully Accountable for All
Strategic Outcomes that leverage Data, Information & Analytics as Core Competencies.
Thoughts to frame our conversation with
• “We can neither transform, nor reach successful strategic outcomes without strong and effective Leadership from the Top-Down”. (Warren Bennis: Leadership maven).
• “In the early days (the past 60 years) we had a scarcity of data and isolated pockets of analytical skills. Today, we have an abundance of data and a growing portfolio of skills in Analytics and Decision Science. However, along this entire timeline we have had precious few CEO’s with any Data, Analytics or Decision Science acumen or expertise.” (A Central Tenant of The Data Leadership Nexus)
Agenda for Today We have 60 minutes to discuss The Data Leadership Nexus and Becoming a Predictive Enterprise. It is meant to be interactive. No need to save your questions to the end. Let’s have a conversation on this important topic. • Big Data, Analytics & The Role of Leadership • The Data Leadership Nexus (Overview) • Top-Down Executive Leadership & Accountability • Organizational Culture • Data, Information & Analytics as Core Competencies • Building a Predictive Enterprise • Profiles in Data Leadership • Closing Remarks • Q&A

Big Data, Analytics & Leadership • Big Data & Analytics in spite of being over-hyped are disruptive
forces in virtually all market sectors; Public, Private & NFP. • Most Organizations are in the early stages of Investment &
Operationalization. Others have been exploiting BD&A for quite some time and may be enjoy some competitive differentiation and optimization.
• The vast majority treat Big Data & Analytics as an “IT Function” with specialist analytics teams spread across numerous Business domains.
• The typical Senior Executive Team, Board of Directors and Others responsible for Strategy & Governance are not “Data & Analytics Illiterate”.
The Data Leadership Nexus • The Data Leadership Nexus is a pathway to Strategic Success when
it comes to realizing the disruptive power of Big Data & Analytics. • This Power has been extolled by many, yet realized by few (until now!)
• The Data Leadership Nexus is the linchpin of your Strategic Plan for building and sustaining “A Predictive Enterprise”. • Evidence-based Decisioning from Front-Line to Boardroom • Full exploitation of all Knowledge & Insights • Optimized Operational Performance
• By Definition The Data Leadership Nexus is the intersection of; • Top-Down Executive Leadership • A Fully-aligned Organizational Culture • The Use of Data, Information & Analytics as Core Competencies
• The Data Leadership Nexus is Your Pathway to becoming a Predictive Enterprise!
The Data Leadership Nexus
Your Predictive Enterprise
Core Competencies of your Strategy • Data • Information • Analytics
Organizational Culture • Engaged • Data & Analytics
Competent
Top-Down Executive Leadership • CEO • Board • Analytics Literate
Critical Definitions Core Competencies: “a defining capability or advantage that distinguishes an enterprise from its competitors” i.e. the inherent intellectual capabilities & acumen found broadly within the Organization and pervasively utilized across the entire Enterprise. Organizational Culture: The shadow of the CEO (and Board). It is found behind every door and felt down every corridor in the Organization. It is the single thread that ties everyone together within any Organization. The Data Leadership Nexus: A strategic framework which connects Core Competencies, Executive Leadership and Organizational Culture to create strategic impact, deep competitive differentiation and enterprise value within every organization striving to become a Predictive Enterprise. Predictive Enterprise: The pervasive use of predictive capabilities (data, information & analytics) to optimize decision making, mitigate risk and exploit insights for competitive advantage
Leadership always comes from the Top-Down
The CEO, Board and Senior Executive Team have been “Missing in Action” during the entirety of the Big Data & Analytics journey to date. • A Critical Inhibitor of Strategic Success • They provide a very limited vision, some funding (CapEx) & headcount,
a few consultants in support of the IT Dept. but no Top-Down Leadership
There is a Total Disconnect between the Strategic Leadership function and the means to successfully execute the Disruptive Strategies that Big Data & Analytics portend. The vast majority (95%+) of Senior Executives & Board Members are “Analytics Illiterate”
An Engaged Culture competent in Data & Analytics The Culture of any Organization is a reflection of the long-term strategic journey that has been taken over the course of its history. • It is shaped daily by the actions & activities of the Senior Executive Team. • It appears as the “shadow of the Chief Executive” and is found behind each door and down every
corridor in the Organization. • It is the single thread that ties everyone together in any Organization. Effective Data Leadership shapes the Organizational Culture to; • Treat “Information as an Asset” in terms of exploitation and stewardship • Embrace “Evidence-based Decisioning” • To employ “Information-driven Risk Management” • To create sustainable sources of Competitive Advantage through “analytics everywhere”. Cultural Adoption is a Transformational Endeavor • Tone is set by “Top-Down” direction and engagement • Driven by formalized Change & Organizational Development activities • Success is realized by Relevance and Continuous Application of new Paradigm activities.
Core Competencies of your Strategy (not IT Functions!) • Data, Information & Analytics must become “defining capabilities/
advantages which distinguish your Organization from its Competition” i.e. Core Competencies
• Data, Information & Analytics are not Technical Disciplines, but ubiquitous Core Competencies in the form of; • Data Curation to develop, enhance and steward historical, reference, transactional and
operational data sources to create & sustain intrinsic value & agility • Information Exploitation by full business contextualization and leverage. • Pervasive Analysis by using the continuous application of statistical, descriptive,
predictive & cognitive Decision Science in every aspect of daily business activities. • Driven by a Collaborative Framework between Data Leadership
(Executive-level) and the IT/Service Delivery Organization (Internal or External)
Defining & Building Your “Predictive Enterprise” • Becoming a Predictive Enterprise is the “holy grail of Big Data
& Analytics”. • Predictive Enterprise’s outperform their peers & competitors
by fully leveraging their Intellectual Capital, Information Assets & Culture using The Data Leadership Nexus as their Strategic Framework.
• The journey to becoming a Predictive Enterprise is Transformational. • No more backwards-looking, gut-based, hierarchical decision making • Everyone is empowered to use facts, insights and proven decision logic to
make real-time, more exacting decisions as close to the customer (opportunity) or challenge (risk) as possible
Strategic & Competitive Advantages • Strategic Advantage with Big Data & Analytics can be • attained by;
• Effective Leadership • A Committed Organizational Culture • The Full Exploitation of Core Competencies
• The Data Leadership Nexus brings these components together in an integrated framework to create the foundation for “Building a Predictive Enterprise”.
• A Predictive Enterprise: Uses Predictive Capabilities driven by data, information & analytics to; Optimize Decision Making, Facilitate Strategic & Operational Outcomes, to Mitigate Risk and to Exploit Insights across the entire Enterprise.
Profiles in Data Leadership
True Data Leaders • The Data Leadership Nexus is a Framework for Strategic Success
i.e. Becoming a Predictive Enterprise. It’s Central Tenant is “Top-Down Leadership”.
• The Senior Executive Team (including CEO) and the Board have been “Missing in Action” for far too long when it comes to Big Data & Analytics. • Funding is not a Proxy for Leadership • Filling this vacuum with “Chief Whatever Officers” is nonsensical and unhelpful. • Unicorns & Griffins are not helpful.
• Accountability is essential to Effective Leadership. • The Organization will not follow, much less Transform w/o The CEO and Board setting
the Tone & Direction.
No Data Leadership Posers Allowed!
Hi There I’m your “Chief Whatever Officer” (aka Proxy Leader)
Brian Cornell - Target Corporation
• “I am a dyed-in-the-wool data guy who likes nothing more than nosing around a store and getting a feel for what’s going on”.
• “My first action as CEO was to move my office down the hall a few steps away from our global data nerve center”
• “We are using data to define the signature categories we’re going to stand for, the ones that can differentiate the brand going forward”.
Data-Driven Customer Insights Maven “The New CEO”
Martin O’Malley: ‘16 Presidential Candidate?
• “Our story, Maryland's story, is the story of better choices and better results”.
• “The “Stats Program” is a Top-Down Leadership Strategy designed to use data to product specific results at every level of Government” – Robert Behn, Harvard-Kennedy School.
• “Our Strategic Plans were driven by data, insights & performance metrics. All exceeded expectations”

Jim Smith - Thomson Reuters
• Thomson Reuters is the world’s leading source of intelligent information for businesses and professionals
• “The Singular Strategic Objective of our merger was to operate as an enterprise rather than a set of distinct portfolio businesses. We want to reap the benefits of scale in order to better serve our customers…..”
• “We’ve stepped up our data-driven innovation initiatives to invest in new ideas which can be leveraged across the business”.
“Information is our Business” President & CEO
Take-Aways
• The Data Leadership Nexus is a Framework, not a panacea. • Becoming a Predictive Enterprise is both a Journey and a
potential Minefield. • The Data Leadership Nexus is based on 3x Factors;
• Top-Down Leadership & Accountability • An Engaged & Motivated Organizational Culture • The Leverage of Core Competencies in Data, Information & Analytics.
• The Predictive Enterprise is clearly differentiated from its Peers and Competition by sustainable sources of Competitive Advantage. • The Data Leadership Nexus framework is a catalyst for Strategic Success.
Closing Remarks • I developed the The Data Leadership Nexus strategic
framework in response to the growing hype-storm around the “Chief Whatever Officer”, the “Data Scientist” and other nonsense that is killing the compelling value proposition represented by Big Data & Analytics.
• Top-Down (Business-side) Leadership has been MIA for 60 years now in respect to assuming their accountabilities for Data, Information & Analytics.
• The Predictive Enterprise has been espoused by many Strategists & IT Analysts. They describe it in flowery terms, but have no idea how to achieve it. I do.
