The Southern Cross Schools Reach-a-Cross Commu-

nity Partnership Programme has expanded its work to

try and improve the quality of Grade 12 results from

local schools. The programme focuses specifically on

Mathematics, Science and English and this year targets

Grade 10 learners from the schools that are currently

participating in the Reach-a-Cross workshops. On Sat-

urday 21 May forty learners from previously disadvan-

taged schools attended the first set of tutorials offered

at Southern Cross Schools. The aim of the tutorials is

to tackle challenging topics and improve the learners’

performance with the hope of ultimately seeing a huge

improvement in their Grade 12 results. The learners

will also be given career guidance in the fields of Maths,

Science and Technology. The programme is coordinated

by Mr Mandla Mangwane and supported by both local

A group of more than 30 boarders went off to the Kruger National Park for an overnight trip this past weekend. They stayed over in the youth hostel at Sku-kuza. Their trip was extremely productive with the group seeing leopard on four different occasions in addition to the many elephant, buffalo and general plain’s game.

A special word of thanks needs to be extended to Ms Amy Evans, Mrs Colleen Taylor and Mr Don de Boer for driving the vehicles and accompanying the boarders.

Thank You:

• Lolli dos Santos for the two

framed posters of SA birds.

• Dot Arthur for the donation

of magazines.

• Karen Puttkammer, Andre van

der Merwe, Winnie Silinda and

Warren & Candice Cary for

helping transport soccer

players to Phalaborwa.

• All parents who sent items for

the Boot Sale. An amount of

about R4 600.00 was raised.

and corporate sponsorship. Should you wish to contrib-

ute to this programme which aims at improving the

Grade 12 results from our area, please contact Mitzi

Boarding House News

Inspiration for College Learners Mr Alan McSmith presented an inspirational encounter for all our College learners on Friday 27 May. He shared some of his experiences in nature and high-lighted certain “golden threads” that learners should take note of in their lives going forward. The encounter allowed learners to reflect on their own emotions, fears and aspirations. There is no doubt that learners were both moved and inspired during the course of the experience. A special word of thanks to Alan for shar-ing such valuable messages with our learners. In the photo above our Grade 12 class can be seen with Alan.

“A Night of a Hundred Lots”

We would like to encourage all our parents to consider donating something for the auction being planned by our Parent Association. As indicated in the letter sent out a little while ago, anything goes. If you have exper-tise or a skill that can be auctioned or a special experi-ence you can offer, please think about making a dona-tion to the organizing committee of “A Night of a Hun-dred Lots”. Donated items will be published in a cata-logue and auctioned at a fun event on Friday 5 August. Please assist our PA to raise funds so that we can de-velop our very own sports fields at the school.

Help Needed with Costumes We need parents to volunteer their sewing skills to help Sally Wiggill and Melissa Ferguson in the making of costumes for “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. If you have the skill, the time and the energy, please contact Sally at school to offer your help. Every extra pair of hands will be greatly appreciated.

Scaly Encounters at R-a-C Workshop Mr Justin van Breda did a presentation on snakes at the R-a-C workshop on Saturday 28 May. Fear and trepida-tion were replaced with curiosity and knowledge.
