Course Code: ENGL 111 Course Title: Language Development I The first of a series of five integrated language courses designed to develop both linguistic understanding and all-round operational proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The series provides for individualized self-instruction and incorporates a monitored extensive reading programme utilizing the self-access reading laboratory. Course Code: ENGL 112 Course Title: Language Development II The second in the series of integrated language courses following on from ENGL 111. Course Code: ENGL 130 Course Title: Introduction to Literature This course is an introduction to literature in English . It involves the reading and discussion of selected short stories, poetry, and drama. Lectures deal with topics related to the understanding and appreciation of literature, including the study of character, plot, theme, setting, structure, style, and figurative language Course Code: ENGL 135 Course Title: Introduction to Fiction This course deals with the novella, a distinctive and well-established genre in literature. It introduces world-famous novellas by the great pillars of this genre, like D. H. Lawrence, James Joyce, Henry James, Virginia Woolf, John Steinbeck, Leo Tolstoy, and others. and through careful analysis and criticism, the course aims at developing the students’ critical and linguistic skills. Course Code: ENGLU 203 Course Title: Language Proficiency This is the third in a series of three integrated courses for all students in the College of Arts. The course is designed to further develop proficiency in the English Language to upper-intermediate level by building on that already acquired in ENGL 111 and ENGL 112. The integrated syllabus includes graded instruction in grammar, vocabulary, use of English and pronunciation, all of which is reinforced with practice in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
