BA (HOnS) COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHY
It is with great pleasure that the staff and students of the course look forward to welcoming you in September, as you start this exciting part of your journey in photographic education.
During your first week you will have the opportunity to learn about your course, the environment at AUB and get to know your new colleagues and the Course Team. You will also get the opportunity to discover Bournemouth and the surrounding area.
During your first term, you will have the opportunity to get to know our fantastic facilities, spending much time in our studios, darkrooms, digital facilities and getting used to our professional standard of equipment.
We hope that you enjoy the summer and we look forward to seeing you on Monday 16 September.

If you are joining AUB in the first year, we will be conducting portfolio ‘show and tell’ sessions so please make sure that you come prepared with your portfolio.
On the Friday of the first week you will need to bring the portfolio you presented at interview.
Books The Library here at AUB is extremely well resourced and includes all key texts that you will need. The list below indicates the key texts that will be useful throughout your studies, all of these are available from the Library at AUB. You might want to borrow a copy from your local library to look at before you arrive. When you arrive at AUB you will receive your Course Handbook which will include a comprehensive reading list.
The texts below offer a good foundation of knowledge to support our curriculum, so you may wish to consider buying copies prior to commencing your studies (or making sure you get to the front of the queue in the library!):

To give you a taste of the course ethos, we suggest that you buy ‘Photography’ by Stephen Bull, published by Routledge.
We suggest that you bring the following items with you:
— Notepad and pens
Although you may already have the photographic equipment necessary to start your course, you may find it useful to read through the list of essential and useful equipment to help support your studies during the following three years.
Essential — DSLR camera (24 megapixels or above, preferably Nikon or Canon) capable of manual aperture and shutter speed control — Sketchbooks -A4 and A5 — 3 memory sticks for submitting work - 8GB — A4 ring binder for course handouts etc. — Portable hard drive (preferably 1TB SSD) — Card reader
Useful — Apple Mac or PC computer — Flash — 35mm film SLR camera capable of manual aperture and shutter speed control (borrow rather than buy if you don’t have one) — Scissors — Cable release — Standard blower brush — Tripod (portable, but heavy enough for medium format cameras and DSLRs with telephoto/zoom lenses)

If you are joining us from overseas, International Orientation week takes place from 9 – 13 September; details of this week will be sent to relevant students separately by email from the International Office.
The academic year for undergraduate students starts on Monday 16 September 2019. Please see your course specific Induction Week timetable below and ensure you’re on campus prompt and ready for your first activity where the Course Leader will meet you.
If for any reason you are delayed on your way to AUB on your first day, please make your way to Main Reception, located on the ground floor of South House. If you are unable to attend Induction Week please contact Admissions (email@example.com) where the team will advise you.
You must arrive and check in on Monday 16 September. Your first few days at the University will include enrolment and induction events to introduce you to the facilities and services you will be using as a student, as well as the activities and resources on your course. You will receive copies of important documents, including your course handbook and the Undergraduate Course Framework and HE Regulations. Many courses will also hold the first classes of the term.
You will be required to be on campus every day of Induction Week. Below you will find the centrally arranged activities (locations in brackets) which have been scheduled for you.

As well as these activities there will be course specific activities and we will confirm these when you arrive.
We will be looking to schedule an educational visit to New York in 2020. Last year we went during the third week of February. On previous visits we have organised a varied and interesting itinerary for the trip. This has included talks from prestigious photographers, agents and agencies. We have worked collaboratively with Fashion Institute of Technology, sharing projects and lessons.
During previous years, the students have worked on a ‘live’ fashion brief collaborating with Criminal Clothing, a ‘live’ brief with New York based magazine Re:Source and a ‘live’ brief with British Airways Magazine ‘High Life’.
The course also visits all the major galleries and museums during the visit. Previous students have found the experience to be a rewarding one that has not only broadened their awareness of photographic practice, but has also led to further opportunities in New York, including internships, work experience and employment.
The full cost of the trip will be approximately £900 (not including food and spending money). This includes transfers, flights, shared rooms for 4/5 nights and basic insurance.
You will be expected to pay a deposit for the trip during the first two weeks of October.
PREPARING FOR YOUR COURSE
Computer Equipment Please note that a computer of your own is NOT a course requirement. However, if you are purchasing any computer equipment for your course, remember that many computer retailers offer student discounts, so if you are considering buying a computer you may wish to wait until you have enrolled on your course. You may also wish to discuss appropriate hardware and software specifications with the course team before purchasing. AUB has a range of Mac and PCs available for students to use.
Recommended Hardware The Photography area and much of the University tends to reflect industry usage and standards. Therefore, Macs tend to be preferred in most studios and in the Library. However, this is not exclusively so and PCs are also available.
Software Provided by AUB Once you enrol on the course you will be able to download Microsoft Office 365 to your personal computer, so don’t pay extra when buying a computer to purchase MS Office. You get it free as an AUB student! You will also have 1TB of cloud storage, which we recommend you use to back-up all work. AUB also provides access to Autodesk software. Before purchasing additional software we advise you check with the course team, and remember many retailers offer student discount.
WHAT TO BRING ON THE FIRST DAY
On the first day you will need to bring a pen, notepad and an academic diary for 2019/20 - either electronic or hardcopy.
Online Enrolment Online enrolment opens on 6 September 2019 and all students must enrol online as soon as possible on or after this date. Online enrolment is accessed via MyApplication. Your username is your 7 digit student number.
If you have taken a loan out with Student Finance England, you will need to complete the online enrolment before we can confirm your registration. Once completed, SFE will release your maintenance loan to you. Typically, maintenance loans are received by students on the first day of term.
