Mosquito repellents are an impor-tant feature in the fight againstzika.
But which one to choose? Andwhat is the best way to apply it?
Pharmacists here recommendproducts containing Deet, achemical compound with a provensafety track record, which has beenused for decades. It is highlyeffective against mosquitoes andalso biting flies, fleas and ticks.
Most repellents pose few sideeffects if used according to instruct-ions, said Ms Clara Lin, a pharmacistwith Watsons Singapore.
A newer compound, Picaridin, has
been found to be as effective as Deetin protecting against mosquitoes.
Generally, when these are used asdirected, they have proven to be safeand effective, even for pregnant andbreastfeeding women, said Ms ZoeKong, principal pharmacist atNational University Hospital.
The benefits of preventingmosquito bites far outweigh therisk of getting the Zika virus trans-mitted from bites, said Ms Lin.
Deet has been shown to be safe inthe second and third trimester ofpregnancy. However, during thefirst trimester, it should be sprayedonto the clothing instead of the
skin to minimise absorption. But, as with any product, there is
a possibility of developing sideeffects when using mosquitorepellent, said Ms Lin.
Side effects, including skin red-ness, rashes or a slight burningsensation, are usually temporaryand will go away once you stopusing the product.
You should avoid using productswhich contain ingredients you areallergic to. Inhalation of Deet andother repellents in large amounts
can cause throat and bronchial (air-way) irritation, as well as coughing.
Some repellents which emitsmoke or vapours such as mosquitocoils, scented candles or liquidvaporisers, may aggravate asthmaconditions and trigger wheezing.
To minimise these side effects, donot spray the insect repellentdirectly onto your face. Spray ontoyour hands first before applying itto your face, said Ms Lin.
Repellents should not be used onbabies younger than two months
old, said Ms Kong. Instead, coverthe crib, stroller and baby carrierwith mosquito netting, she added.
The choice of mosquito repellentdepends on the duration of timespent outdoors.
A higher concentration of repel-lent will have longer-lasting effec-tiveness. An insect repellent with 7per cent Deet lasts about two hours, while one with 15 per cent Deet maylast up to four hours, said Ms Lin.

Ms Clara Lin, a pharmacistwith Watsons Singapore, givestips on using repellents:
DO• Read the directions on label.• Use just enough repellent
to cover exposed skin.• Apply sparingly around ears.• Stop using the repellent
if it causes skin reaction.• Stick patches onto clothes
or to an article close to you.
DON’T• Spray in enclosed areas
or near food.• Apply over cuts, wounds
or irritated skin.• Spray directly onto the face.• Apply to eyes and mouth.• Use Deet with sunscreen
as it may make the sunprotection factor (SPF) lesseffective. Apply sunscreenfirst and apply therepellent 15 minutes later.
• Apply the patch directlyonto the skin.
• Apply to your child’s handsas it is likely to make contactwith his eyes or mouth.
