Received October 31, 2011

Abstract The authors carried out holistic studies to analyze the extent to which Japanese university students’ English vocabulary varies, depending on the fields of target words and the language skills. This paper makes a more detailed examination of the rate at which each English word is acquired by Japanese university students in listening and reading, with target words in business and non-business areas. Then English words which have stronger correlations with business-oriented TOEIC test scores are presented.
