Dear Supporter,

SanAntoniohasanimportantgaptofillintheworkforceareasofscience,technology,engineer,andmathematics(STEM).Hispanicsmakeup20percentofthenation’syouthpopulation,yetonly2percentoftheSTEMworkforceisHispanic,accordingtorecentdatafromtheU.S.Dept.ofEducation.Nationally,only12%ofHispanicsin2009,graduatedwitha2-yeardegreeinSTEMandonly8%graduatedwitha4-yeardegreeinSTEM.Inacitythatistheup-and-comingleaderincybersecurity,militarySTEMcareers,andotherSTEM-focusedworkforceneeds,onethingiscertain:weneedchange.

Forfiveyears,theSanAntonioHispanicChamberofCommercehashostedthelargestSTEMConferenceinSanAntonio:theAnnualCORE4STEMExpo.Nowinitssixthyear,thiseventisagreatefforttoinspireouryoungSanAntoniostudentstoexplorefuturecareersinScience,Technology,EngineeringandMathematics.Thisyear’sCORE4STEMExpowillbeheldonNovember14-18,2015during“SanAntonioSTEMWeek,”anothertraditioninitiatedbytheSanAntonioHispanicChamberofCommerceinpartnershipwiththeCityofSan Antonio.

The6thAnnualCORE4STEMExpoeventconsistsofaLatinaDay(allgirls),LatinoDay(allboys),andFamilyDaywherestudentsarejoinedbytheirparentsandyoungersiblingsonacollegecampus,oftenforthefirsttime.Thisenlighteningeventwillbringtogethermorethan4,500middleschoolstudentsfromfiveinner-cityschooldistrictstoexperiencehands-on,interactivewaystoenhancetheireducationalattainmentinSTEM.ThemajorityofthestudentscomefromSouthSan,Harlandale,Southwest,Edgewood,andSanAntonioIndependentSchoolDistricts,thedistrictswiththemostsignificanteducationalattainmentissues.

ThestudentsinvitedtotheeventarethoseinneedofthegreatestSTEMpush.ThesestudentswillbecomeSanAntonio’sfutureworkforceanddeterminethefutureeconomicsuccessofthisregionandournation.ThisuniqueExpoinvolveslocalSanAntoniocorporations,businesses,governmentalagencies,andinstitutionsofhigher-education.ThispresentsapersonalopportunityforstudentstoseethemanydifferenttypesofSTEMopportunitiesandcareersthatareavailabletotheminthefuture.

Byusinghands-onsessionstaughtbylocalcommunityleaders,ourstudentsgettoexperienceSTEMcareeropportunitiesintheirowncommunity.WeseparateourExpointothreedays:LatinaDay(allgirls),LatinoDay(all

boys),andFamiliaDay(wherestudentscanbringtheirfamilieswiththemwhiletheylearnaboutSTEM).

ManySanAntoniobusinessandeducationleadersstepuptoteachsessionsforourstudents.Pastpresentershaveincluded:ToyotaMotorManufacturingTexas,AT&T,Rackspace,CPSEnergy,TimeWarnerCable,Boeing,Whataburger,theUnitedStatesNavy,NASA,FIRSTRobotics,Geekdom,AlamoColleges,theUniversityoftheIncarnateWord,St.Mary’sUniversity,TexasA&MSanAntonio,TheUniversityofTexasatSanAntonio,SanAntonioPublicLibrary,GirlsInc.,BotShop,DiscoverEngineering,theTexasAllianceofMinoritiesinEngineering(TAME),TacoCabana,andmanymore!

TheoriginalAT&TGranttokickstartthisprogramwasawardedin2009.Atthetime,theSanAntonioHispanicChamberofCommercetargetedthefiveschooldistrictswhodemonstratedthehighest“at-risk/atneed”

populations:EdgewoodIndependentSchoolDistrict,SanAntonioIndependentSchoolDistrict,HarlandaleIndependentSchoolDistrict,SouthwestIndependentSchoolDistrict,andSouthSanIndependentSchoolDistrict.

OurAnnualCORE4STEMExpoisaweeklongeventwhichincludesaLatinaDay(allgirls),LatinoDay(allboys),FamilyDay(studentsbringtheirfamilies)andaVIPThankYouDinnerforallourpartners,schooldistrictrepresentatives,sponsors,andEducationCommittee.

Our6thAnnualCORE4STEMExpowillbringtogethermorethan4,500middleschoolstudentsfromat-riskschooldistrictsincluding:HarlandaleISD,SouthSanISD,EdgewoodISD,SouthwestISD,andSanAntonioISD.ThesestudentswillexperiencewaystoenhancetheireducationalattainmentinSTEM.OurExpoallowsthestudentstoexperienceandengageinSTEMCareerlearningopportunitiesinanexciting,funwaythroughhands-onsessionstaughtbyourcommunitypartners.

ThesestudentswillbecomeSanAntonio’sfutureworkforceanddetermineourfutureeconomicsuccess.WiththesupportofMayorJulianCastroandCongressmanJoaquinCastro,thiseventhasbecomeanannualtraditioninwhichSanAntoniodedicatestheweekgettingstudentsexcitedaboutSTEMpathways.

Since1929,theSanAntonioHispanicChamberofCommerce,America’sfirstHispanicChamber,hasrepresentedtheinterestsofallsmallbusinessownerswhohaveneededastrongvoicetoearnanequalshareoftheAmericandream.
