Ngaji gurrijn, We’ve had an excellent start to Term 4 at Broome Primary. Students have settled into school routines and are demonstrating the You Can Do It Persistence Key by working tough in class. A school culture of working tough in the classroom, combined with our dedicated staff and their targeted teaching, saw our school achieve our best NAPLAN results on record. Across all learning areas of the test and in both Years 3 and 5, we outperformed schools that are similar to ours. In many instances, our performance was significantly higher than that of our ‘like schools’. This is certainly an an achievement worth celebrating. Last Friday being World Teacher’s Day, provided a perfect opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate all of our amazing staff who care deeply about each and every student in our school. More than that, their dedication to their role and this school, demonstrates a high level of care for the Broome Primary School community. Our school purpose is to strengthen opportunity, strengthen community. The professionalism, dedication and commitment that the entire Broome Primary School team demonstrate each and every day, certainly strengthens both the opportunities for our students and the broader community. Thank you to all of our staff – cleaners, gardener, office staff, teachers, AIEOs and all education assistants who work so tirelessly for our students and community. Last week also Janun Gujarra hosted our first whole school assembly for Term 4. As always it proved to be a fantastic assembly and was a great opportunity for us to come together as a community. In fact, our assemblies are always held on Mamaburlanjin Waranyjarri (Canteen Undercover Area) or Mamaburlanjin Gurdidi (Basketball Court). Quite fittingly, Mamaburlanjin is Yawuru for coming together. We look forward to seeing you over the coming weeks as we continue to celebrate our students and community. Gala mabu. Galiya.           SCHOOL NEWS Divorce and Separation Family separation and divorce can be very stressful for children, young people and families, with people placed under varying degrees of stress. How might children and young people react? Each child or young person will respond differently to a family breakup, depending on many factors such as their personality, coping style, relationship with family members, how their family is coping and the messages they receive about the separation. Children and young people from the same family may also respond differently. Children and young people benefit when families: • reassure them often that they’ll not lose the love and care of either parent, and back this up with action • explain what’s happening as it relates to them (for example, where they’ll be living, how they’ll get to school), and let them know clearly what things will change and how, and what will stay the same • try to maintain normal routines as far as possible, as this helps children and young people feel safer • understand and acknowledge that children and young people find it hard, and may react differently to other children in the family • provide extra support before and after contact visits to help children and young people settle • recognise that it’s likely to be difficult for children and young people when either parent starts a new relationship • get support for themselves to help them manage the stress of separation • recognise that if there’s ongoing conflict and hostility between family members, it’s much harder for children and young people – their well-being suffers and they’re more likely to experience emotional or behavioural problems. • respect their need to continue their relationship with the other parent (unless it’s unsafe), as well as with extended family such as grandparents, and support them to do so • try to ensure that visits to the other parent are regular and predictable • avoid criticising the other parent to children and young people – conflict with the other parent should be addressed directly with them, and should not involve the child • allow older adolescents a more active role in the decision-making about their living arrangements.

MULTI SPORT CARNIVAL

DAY FOR DANIEL

Last Friday was Day for Daniel and staff and students were invited to wear something red to School in support of the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. The focus of the day was to educate students about keeping safe through child safety and protection initiatives. The day was aimed to empower our students to recognise, react and report if they feel something is not right, with some classes taking part in 'Australia's biggest Child Safety Lesson', which is also part of the Daniel Morcombe foundation initiative.
