International Students
Get to Work(shops) We have had two successful workshops
with our International students through
Clarkson’s Conversation Club.
On November 9, International students
were able to attend a workshop on “Fun
in Mississauga”. Students learned about
life in the Mississauga area, including
where to find nearby supermarkets, drug
stores, community centres, libraries,
sports resources, shopping centres and
also tourist attractions. There were about
40 students who attended and enjoyed
playing games and activities during the
workshop.
On November 23, we had a presentation
about volunteer hours and resources.
Students were able to learn about
various types of volunteer activities and
some mainstream students were invited
by Ms. Mureseanu to share their
volunteer experiences and around
Clarkson.
Is there information that you’d like to
see presented in a workshop? Are
there any topics you’d like to talk
about in Conversation Club? Please
send your ideas to Ms. Mureseanu or
our settlement worker, Annie Chen.

Do you have your immunizations done? If students have received a letter from Peel
Health, they must either go to their doctor or
to a walk-in clinic and have their
immunizations done there. Call Peel Health
(905) 799-7700 or go online to
immunizepeel.ca to tell them that you have
done it. If you have any questions, please call
Peel Health (905) 799-7700. They have workers
who speak all languages to help you.
Students MUST get their immunizations done,
otherwise they will be suspended from school.
IMPORTANT » If students have moved homes
after September 2016, they need to inform
Peel Health to update their file.
During the winter months, the Peel Board may
need to cancel buses or close schools due to
harsh weather. Cancellations or closures will be
announced on radio and television stations
posted at www.peelschools.org and
www.stopr.ca. Also check on Twitter

On December 7, International and
mainstream students celebrated
Christmas and the beginning of the
holiday season in Canada.
Using musical videos, stories, and
games, they found common ground
in learning and sharing about
cultural traditions. For many
International students, this is their
first year in Canada away from their
families; so having some time to
share cookies and treats with
friends could be the closest it can
get to a family reunion.
This student-led activity brought
together over 25 students and staff
members, and it is just one
of many annual celebrations
organized by the Conversation Club.
Christmas comes early for
the Conversation Club!

A Showcase of Student Work:
International students show their artistic flair
Not only are Clarkson’s International students successful in academics, they’re incredibly talented in the fine arts as well!
These pieces were all created in Mr. Zimmer’s Grade 11 & 12 Art classes.
Are you graduating in June 2017 and would like your parents to attend Commencement?
If you are graduating this year and would like your parents to attend, please see
Ms. Gonzales-Fadel for details. She can arrange a formal invitation for your family
and/or other proof of your residence/study for their travel visa arrangements if
necessary. Commencement will be on Thursday, June 29, 2017.
International Students Go GREEN! Clarkson students had the opportunity to experience the great
outdoors back in October. Under the supervision of Ms. Leavitt
and Mr. Takhar, Grade 10 Science students travelled to a
natural park site in Georgetown along the Credit River. Our
students studied the Credit River watershed by measuring the
health of the river. They caught and identified water life in the
river allowing them to measure biodiversity levels. Students
also measured various physical factors of the river including
temperature pH and turbidity.
In addition, students planted over 250 native trees and shrubs.
Overall, it was great opportunity for students to put into
action the concepts of stewardship and sustainability
within our local ecosystems.

Do you have a good dictionary?
Exams are fast approaching! Although students will NOT be allowed to use
their electronic dictionaries and/or smart devices (iPhone, tablet, etc.) during
the January or June exams, they are permitted to use a paperback dictionary
that can help them with translating words from their home language to
English. Students will not be allowed to borrow them from teachers and/or
the library during this time. If students need to buy one for themselves, it
costs about $20 at the Chapters/Indigo bookstore and/or online.

Looking for something fun to do in the
GTA during the Winter Break? Go ice skating – There are plenty of ice rinks in Mississauga and
Toronto. Public skating times are usually free (some adult only skating
times are $3). Most rinks have scheduled times for different age groups,
so check for when you should come:
Celebration Square, Mississauga: Free (but no skate rental)
Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto: Free (not including skate rentals)
Harbourfront Centre, Toronto: Free (not including skate rentals)
Go tobogganing/sledding – It’s a Canadian winter tradition, and best of
all, it’s totally free. You can use a shiny new sled from “Toys R Us” or
borrow a used one and head down a slope or two. There’s usually a lot
of toboggan action in Mississauga at Erindale Park, “Kentucky Hill” at
Birchwood Park (Port Credit area), and Brookmede Park. Or, you can try
Bronte Creek Provincial Park in Oakville.
Winter at the Museums - Discover Bradley House, and see how an
early settler family would prepare for and celebrate the Christmas
season. Visit the Log Cabin and have your photo taken with Santa
Claus, sample some Christmas goodies in the volunteer-operated tea
room and listen to live traditional music in the historic buildings.
