By Ray Best . ----------- CYATkIU KARCESCENS PROPAGATED FROM S P O R E ? - --- By hod H i l l .
I t is generally accep ted t h a t Cyathea marcescens, t h e s k i r t e d T r e e f e r n , I s a hyb r id between Cyathea A u s t r a l i s (Rough T r e e f e r n ) and C, cunninghamii ( S l e n d e r Treefern) .As with many h y b r i d s , i t seems that t h e S k i r t e d T r e e f e r n is s t e r i l e ; a l l of my own many a t t e m p t s t o c o l l e c t and grow s p o r e have been wi thou t success .
S e v e r a l y e a r s ago I was a b l e t o c o l l e c t s p o r e of Cyathea cunninghamii and dec ided t h i s was a p e r f e c t o p p o r t u n i t y t o a t t e m p t t o c r o s s t h i s w i t h C . a u s t r a l i s . Many of t h e methods o u t l i n e d i n t e x t b o o ~ s f o r crossing ferns sound r a t h e r t e c h n i c a l and t e d i o u s and s o I op ted f o r s i m p l y sowing bo th s p o r e t o g e t h e r and a l l owing n a t u r e t o t a k e i ts course .
However, i t seemed t o me sowing equa l q u a n t i t i e s o feach p a r e n t would n o t encourage h y b r i d i z a t i o n . I f t h e r e a r e p l e n t y of each pa r en t p r e s e n t , then t h e r e seems t o be a g r e a t e r o p p o r t u n i t y f o r each p r o t h a l l u s t o be f e r t i l i z e d by t h e same s p e c i e s , and l e s s chance of c r o s s f e r t i l i z a t i o n .
