BP and its partners awarded McConnell Dowell, in Joint Venture with CCCIC, two EPC contracts as part of the major pipeline developments to transport oil and gas from the Caspian Sea and then west to Turkey. The project consisted of an EPC contract for dual 42” diameter automatically welded pipelines. Both pipelines followed the same 442km route from the Sangachal terminal, 46km from the Azerbaijan capital of Baku, to the Georgian border, traversing remote locations and experiencing extremes in cold temperatures in areas South of the Caucasus Mountains. SPECIALISED PLANT Within the JV, Dutco McConnell Dowell mobilised over 170 items of specialised pipeline plant from our Dubai facility including transport, logistics and a team of plant management and maintenance staff. The mobilisation often involved difficult or dangerous locations and typically included sea freight from Dubai to Iran followed by road transport through Iran to Azerbaijan. McConnell Dowell also provided key construction, safety and project management staff for the duration of the project. MAJOR CROSSINGS The Joint Venture also performed seven major horizontal directionally drilled crossings (HDDs) during the project. These were carried out utilising a 250 t capacity HDD rig. Five 42” diameter directional drill crossings were successfully completed on the Azerbaijan section of the BTC oil pipeline and two 42” diameter directional drill crossings were completed on the SCP Azerbaijan section. The seven crossings varied in length between 494m and 1,002m and the product pipes consisted of 42 inch API-5L Grade X70 tri-laminate coated pipe. PROJECT SUMMARYThe Baku – Tbilisi – Ceyhan Pipeline (BTC) and South Caucasus Pipeline Company (SCP) natural gas pipeline completed a vital link in the 1,768km pipeline running from the Caspian Sea oil and gas fields, through the three countries of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey.

The mobilisation often involved difficult or dangerous locations and typically included sea freight from Dubai to Iran followed by road transport through Iran to Azerbaijan.
