own Privy Tippers. Your callers will be David Millstone and David Kaynor.

Vermont based trio Pete’s Posse is composed of acclaimed musician Pete Sutherland (fiddle, piano, banjo, melodica, and vocals), his talented protégé Oliver Scanlon (fiddle, viola, mandolin, foot percussion and vocals) and the uber-dynamic Tristan Henderson (guitars, mandolin, jaw harp, foot percussion and vocals). Twin fiddles in tight, wild harmony over high-powered guitar and pounding footwork with mandolin, clawhammer banjo, jawharp and rocking keyboards adding their voices to the mix. Songs and tunes, old and new, lyrical and driving: that’s the multi-generational heart and mind of Pete’s Posse, at work and at play. Find out more and give them a listen at: www.petespossevt.com .

Hailing from Tucson, the beloved Privy Tippers are a rock-solid dance band steeped in the Southern string band tradition. Over the past 17 years they kept one foot in the South while they stepped into several other musical traditions, such as French Canadian, New England and music of the Southwestern Borderlands. Jacquie Wohl leads the band with her driving melodic fiddling. Dave Firestine is an exceptional lead and back-up mandolin player who adds a danceable punch to each and every note. On string bass, Jerry Ray Weinert lays the rhythmic foundation for the musical dance of the fiddle and mandolin. The Privy Tippers are fortunate to have two skilled guitar partners, depending on performance location. Jesse Jacob Anderson, from Flagstaff, AZ, plays guitar and clawhammer banjo. Given Harrison, from Carlsbad, CA, brings years of multi-instrumental experience from Old-time, Bluegrass and Country music traditions. Explore their sound at: www.privytippers.com

David Millstone started contra dancing in the early 1970s and has been calling dances for some 40 years. He is a wealth of information and expertise in the dance world. With an American repertoire ranging from traditional New England chestnuts to high-energy recent compositions, he calls contras, squares, and interesting dances in odd formations. He is known for his clear and supportive teaching style, the breadth of his repertoire, his sense of humor, and his ability to pick

dances that offer the right level of challenge for all audiences.

David Kaynor began playing fiddle in 1974. Since then, he has played in country-rock bar bands, string bands, and contra dance bands, mostly around the Connecticut River Valley. He began calling contra dances in 1980. Able to call and play at the same time and lead dances as a solo fiddler/caller, David is like what one thinks of as a "dancing master" of the nineteenth century. He knows a goodly number of easy circle, longways set, and contra dances and singing games, which are well suited to events outside the regular contra dance scene. His expertise and versatility show whenever he calls.

PhxTMD Launches Membership Drive Aug – Sep Phoenix

Phoenix Traditional Music & Dance is beginning our annual membership drive. We would love to include you among the friendly folks who support this lively, active source of entertainment. Just $5 will sign you up for a year, and you will be added to the email list and receive a nifty name badge for 2017-18. In addition, you get some 20 contra dances a year, a mini-weekend with nationally renowned talent, instruction in English Country Dance and other English dance events, the occasional house concert, special dance parties, and participation in public arts and culture events. Your membership guarantees that you will hear about all of these events through our well-maintained website: phxtmd.org, an informative newsletter with news of music and dance happenings all over Arizona and the Southwest, monthly e-mail reminders for all events, and our Facebook page, Contra Dance Phoenix. Of course, the most important part of your membership is belonging to the ongoing outreach to advance American traditional culture.

Phoenix Traditional Music & Dance is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to preserving and presenting traditional music and dance. This group has been active in the Phoenix arts scene since the early 1980’s. It all began in the tiny clubhouse at Encanto Park with a handful of dancers and musicians. In more than 35 years of continuous music and dancing, we have grown to a vibrant group with hundreds of members. At the regular contra dances, you join more than 60 dancers, and sometimes there are closer to 100 on the floor.

Please renew (or initiate) your membership. You may fill out a

membership form at the admission table at any dance, or you may join online at phxtmd.org. Just click on the “About Us” tab.

Thank you in advance for your support of this long standing society of music and dance lovers. We love to dance with you.

How Can I Help? PHXTMD Seeks Volunteers

Along with the annual membership drive, Phoenix Traditional Music & Dance is recruiting members to volunteer to help at dances, or to serve on the board of directors. During August, we encourage all dancers to look around and notice the folks who help make the dances wonderful fun. If you would like to volunteer to help with a monthly dance, or in a bigger way by helping make the decisions that spearhead the activities for the coming year, we welcome you!

Dance volunteers can lend a hand by helping set up the sound system and information table, or by bringing snacks, sitting at the welcome table, sweeping floors at intermission, packing up at the end, publicizing dances, and lots of other tasks. Many hands make light work, so everyone helping in a small way makes the evening a success. Your dance club needs you, so please consider coming early or staying late to help out a few times a year.

Do you have the drive to participate in the future of your dance club? What better way to get involved than to volunteer to be a member of the board? Your help would be appreciated and you’ll have a great experience helping make the decisions that drive the dances. Board members meet every month to be sure that all volunteer positions are covered, to plan special events, and keep the non-profit organization running. If you want to make a difference and insure the continuation of PhxTMD, we would love to have you. At a dance, just let anyone at the welcome table know

that you are interested in being a board member. After the hugs and handshakes, your name will be put on the list of candidates for the upcoming election in September. We can have up to eleven board members, and there is room for you!

National Dance Day Sat Jul 29 Nationwide

National Dance Day is an annual celebration that takes place on the last Saturday in July. This grassroots campaign by Nigel Lythgoe, producer, choreographer, and creator of the television series So You Think You Can Dance, encourages Americans to embrace dance as a fun and positive way to maintain good health and fight obesity.

National Dance Day was established in 2010. The day began in an effort to get people of all ages moving, and to create awareness for what dance is really all about. Nigel wanted to demonstrate that dance has the power to motivate, heal, and inspire everyone to stay healthy. NDD achieved national recognition when Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), a long-time proponent of healthy lifestyles, announced at a press conference on July 31, 2010, that she was introducing a congressional resolution declaring the last Saturday in July to be the country’s official NDD.

Every year, on the last Saturday in July, people all over America come together and have fun in free dance classes, aerobics, Zumba, and whatever else keeps them active. Professional choreographers and dancers work together to create an official routine for the year and everyone is encouraged to post videos of themselves or groups performing this routine. Anyone can create a National Dance Day venue by posting what the activity will be and where it will take place on the website dizzyfeetfoundation.org.

Registration opened on May 1 for Harvest Moon with its “best in the west” legendary Sprung Floor at the Carrillo Ballroom in downtown Santa Barbara, CA.

This year, the weekend features Wild Asparagus, a premier band from Massachusetts, with special guest Mark ‘Pokey’ Hellenberg. Using a unique blend of instruments, they offer a sensitive and powerful performance.

Additionally, you’ll dance to Riptide, one of the most energetic contra bands on the scene today, with most of this foursome hailing from Maine. They love the music they play, and their repertoire contains literally hundreds of tunes from New England, Quebec, Ireland, Appalachia, and more.

Expert calling will be by George Marshall, whose specialty is teaching and calling the New England-style contra dances he has collected from all around the country. He is renowned for his knack of matching music to dances and for his smooth, concise teaching and presentation.

Susan Michaels will also call, hailing now from the state of Washington. As a dancer herself, she genuinely expresses her love of the music through her calling. Her dynamic style and dry wit will please every dancer.

Since then Karen had been highly sought after and has been touring the world as full time fiddler with Celtic Legends. She has also appeared with Full Set and Carlos Nuñez.

Michael Coult, originally from a town called Glossop close to Manchester, moved to Limerick in 2005 where he completed a BA with Honours in Irish Music and Dance. His master craft is playing flute and whistles, but he is well known on the Irish session scene as a guitar

accompanist and an exponent of the uncommonly used ‘Open D’ tuning. He works extensively with the incredibly popular touring production, “Celtic Legends” playing endless sellout shows all over the world.

Kieran Leonard is a drummer, percussionist and Bodhrán specialist from Enniskillen, Co.Fermanagh. He graduated with a BMus and PgDip in orchestral percussion and timpani whilst also studying drums from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. He is very active on the London orchestral and session scene free-lancing regularly with the world renowned English National Opera as a percussionist. Other recent projects have taken Kieran to the USA as the drummer for ‘Goitse’ 7 piece, recording with the National Folk Orchestra of Ireland, accompanying ‘Take That’ in the O2, playing principal percussion for the world premiere of "The Belfast Opera" and appearing with the Carlos Acosta Ballet Company residency.

The band’s token Scotsman is Calum Morrison from Glasgow. He grew up listening to traditional Scottish and Irish music. A graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with a BA with Honours in Scottish Music, he became well-known in Glasgow's

session scene for his dynamic yet rhythmic guitar playing. In addition to playing the guitar and singing, he also plays the banjo, tenor guitar, bodhran and Highland Bagpipes. When you mix a Scot with three Irishmen, you get one heck of a fun night!

Federspiel Sun Jul 9 The MIM

Creativity, spontaneity, and joy run high on the list of priorities of the brass-band ensemble Federspiel. In 2005, seven young musicians, all

students of the University of Music and Performing Arts–Vienna or the Vienna Konservatorium, joined together to form Federspiel. Folk music from Austria, neighboring countries, and beyond is the starting point for their concerts. The musicians work on the melodies, improvise over them, and let them sound new in their very specific tone—always with a splash of humor and self-irony. These guys are conservatory trained, which I think gives them all a very sweet and strong technique. A combination of musical adventure and classical diligence creates Federspiel’s strength. They are remarkably controlled, subtle and even spiritual.

Federspiel’s particular style is defined by the origins and backgrounds of each individual musician and creates the unique sound of the band. The group’s music consists of original compositions with pop elements as well as arrangements of traditional zither and Mexican folk music. Their music cannot be categorized within a single genre but comfortably moves between existing genres such as folk, world, and traditional music.

With the incredible enjoyment of playing old traditional patterns and by completely leaving behind stylistic borders, Federspiel has no dogmatic bottlenecks and no creative scruples.

Mariachi, mazurka, military march, csárdás, volksweise (folk tune / traditional proverb), and folk dance join in a fascinating mixture that brings musical light today as it surely will even in twenty or thirty years.

Catch this versatile band on Sunday, July 9 at 7:00 pm at the Musical Instrument Museum, 4725 E. Mayo Boulevard, Phoenix, AZ 85050. Tickets are $33.50–$43.50, and are on sale now. Go to www.themim.org or call the box office at 480-478-6000.

Carbon Leaf Mon Sep 4 The MIM

With sixteen albums and over 2,300 live shows spanning a twenty-four-year career, Carbon Leaf continues to create the music and the spirit that resonate with its fans into 2017. Blending folk, Celtic, bluegrass, Americana, and rock traditions into what the group calls Ether-Electrified Porch Music, the Virginia quintet’s songs of love, life, heartbreak, and landscape are independently written, recorded, and produced from their home studio in Richmond. The band’s music incorporates acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin, fiddle, bass, drums, cello, banjo, penny whistle,

pedal steel, accordion, and vocal harmony.

Some call Carbon Leaf’s music Southern, others label it Celtic and still others say it leans toward bluegrass or some combination of formats. No matter what your take on the . . . band’s sound, almost everyone can agree that Carbon Leaf creates music that just isn’t heard anywhere else—and that’s what keeps fans clamoring for more music.

This eclectic show begins at 7:00 pm on Monday, September 4 at the MIM, 4725 E. Mayo Boulevard. Tickets are $36.50 & $41.50 including the service fee, and are available at themim.org, or by calling the box office at 480-478-6000.

The traveling band members were Janice Griscom (keyboard and flute), Karen Appleby (flute), Alison Adams (fiddle), Susan Billingsly (concertina), Pat Dunham (fiddle), Paul Seyler (banjo), and Mike Dunham (Hammered dulcimer and fiddle). The gigs included a stage performance at Camelot Acoustic Night in Yeovil, two informal pub-style performances at Chapel Cross
