Welcome to Campo Amigo RD!

Page 3: Ayuda in the DR

Where kids with diabetes

of all ages come to learn

vital self management

skills

Page 4: Ayuda in the DR

such as how to check their

blood sugars and interpret the results,

Page 5: Ayuda in the DR

identify appropriate

injection sites,

Page 6: Ayuda in the DR

and give themselves

insulin injections.

Page 7: Ayuda in the DR

At camp they also play

sports and games,

Page 8: Ayuda in the DR

sing and dance,

Page 9: Ayuda in the DR

and spend time with

other kids with diabetes.

Page 10: Ayuda in the DR

The goal is for them to know

how to manage their diabetes so that it can

become a smaller part of

their lives.

Meet the volunteers!

Page 12: Ayuda in the DR

Three of us have diabetes ourselves, and

we were all trained in diabetes

education before camp

Page 13: Ayuda in the DR

As AYUDA volunteers, we

collaborated with the Dominican

foundation "Fundacion

Aprendiendo A Vivir" and local med students

Page 14: Ayuda in the DR

While we weren’t

working at the camp,

Page 15: Ayuda in the DR

we worked on preparing

materials for sports,

nutrition, and education,

Page 16: Ayuda in the DR

visited communities around Santo

Domingo,

Page 17: Ayuda in the DR

met with kids individually,

Page 18: Ayuda in the DR

and visited the local hospital

where our campers go

for prescriptions

and treatment.

Page 19: Ayuda in the DR

We also enjoyed delicious

Dominican meals, such as

mangu (mashed plantains),

Page 20: Ayuda in the DR

And learned traditional dances.

Here is a typical day at

camp:

Page 22: Ayuda in the DR

The day starts with the

volunteers setting up for

activities, snacks, and blood testing

breaks,

Page 23: Ayuda in the DR

And then the campers start to arrive. They are weighed,

and their blood sugars are taken and

recorded.

Page 24: Ayuda in the DR

Then the volunteers

begin lessons in nutrition,

diabetes education, and

sports

Page 25: Ayuda in the DR

Between every activity, all of the campers check their

blood sugars and are given insulin injections if the doctor thinks it is necessary.

Page 26: Ayuda in the DR

After lunch and a third

activity, all of the groups and parents

come together for a final

group activity
