Welcome to the first ArygleYouthToday issue. Our goal is to highlight the activities of the Argyle ISD community in sports, band, art, and UIL participation.

Our first issue’s main article provides a recap of Argyle Football’s last year’s won-derful season and provides an overview of the upcom-ing season.. Our October is-sue will focus on the award winning Argyle Marching Band.

We hope you enjoy the magazine and welcome suggestions, stories, and photos for future issues.

Go Eagles, Sydney Austin

Story by Steve Sheridan.

Argyle Football

Although it was more than 40 years ago that the song “Changes” by David Bowie was released, it appears that tune could be the appropriate theme song for the 2012 Argyle Eagles football team. After posting a 14-2 record and making a run all the way to the 3-A state title game last season, the upcoming version of the Argyle gridiron squad will be significantly different.

“This year we are facing the biggest wholesale changes in the pro-gram that we have seen in the past several years after losing many outstanding senior players,” Argyle head coach Todd Rodgers said. “There is a definite overhaul taking place when it comes to Argyle football. We have fewer returning starters than we have had in the recent past. Fortunately for us, many of the players who are re-turning received valuable playing time last year even though they weren’t starters.”

The Eagles didn’t just have a great year in 2011…they dominated in 2011. After outscoring its regular season opponents 426-141 and racing through an undefeated district campaign, Argyle ran off Argyle Youth Today

playoff wins against Commerce, Prosper, Carthage, Gilmer and Monahans before eventually falling to Wimberley by just sev-en points in the state title game. The Eagles weren’t at full strength for that champion-ship contest, as All-State quarterback Austin Aune had a severe case of the flu and su-perstar wide receiver Ian Sadler went down with a knee injury on the first offensive series for Argyle.

After watching Sadler go down at Cowboys Stadium last season, Rodgers hopes Sadler can practice and play every day this year.

“He’s an amazing athlete,” Rodgers said. “I hope to use him at every offensive position this year if we can.”

Other key returnees for the Eagles this season include offensive linemen Trevor Jones, Jordan Deagen and Tanner Fought,

kicker Cole Hedlund and linebacker Sam Sizelove.

Another big change the Eagles will see this season will be in district play. After participating the past two years in District 9-3A with Aubrey, Gainesville, Pilot Point, Whitesboro and arch rival Sanger, Argyle has been moved by the UIL to District 10-3A for the next two years where it will face Aubrey, Carrollton Ranchview, Celina and Frisco Lone Star.

“District play will be very interesting this year,” Rodgers said. “While we are familiar with Aubrey and Celina, we are unfamil-iar with Carrollton Ranchview and Frisco Lone Star. Aubrey and Celina have high expectations for their programs, and we expect much of the same from the other two. As always, our goals will be to win the district title and make a deep playoff run.”

One quirk in the 2012 schedule compared to past seasons is that the Eagles will face six non-district opponents instead of the usual five.

“The district setup with only five total teams will be a completely different ani-mal for us this season,” Rodgers said. “The way the draw came out when it came to scheduling was very favorable for us.
