• AYSO and United States Soccer Federation (USSF) Focus –o Development Over Winningo Quality Trainingo Age Appropriateo Have Fun/Inspire Players
Quality Session Planning and Implementation
• How we get this accomplished:–Planning a Training Session–Preparing a Training Session–Performing (at training and at game)–Evaluating (training and game)–Amending training–Re-evaluating!
Quality Session Planning and Implementation
What is the purpose of a training session (practice)?
• To improve each player’s technical and tactical ability.
• To improve the teams tactical ability and overcome any shortfalls.
• To prepare for the next game.
Quality Session Planning and Implementation
For a training session to be successful, a coach must:
• Prepare • Plan • Perform• Evaluate• Amend
Quality Session Planning and Implementation
For a training session to be successful a coach must:
Prepare! • How do you prepare? • How do you know what to work on?
• What do your players & the team need?
Quality Session Planning and Implementation
How do you know what to work on ? At the first training session of the season
use the “Free Play” method to evaluate strengths and weaknesses of each player and the team.
What is free play and Why use it?
After the first training session your game analysis will determine what you train.
Quality Session Planning and Implementation
“Free Play”:
• Is used to observe the player’s and the team’s soccer capabilities.
• Free play describes the condition where individuals play with minimal restrictions on time or space.
• Players are given general directions on what they should attempt to accomplish and then left to play while coaches just observe and evaluate.
• The players should play hard, get water, and rest as is warranted.
• A coach’s observational powers will increase as they are forced to isolate individual action in small groups.
Quality Session Planning and Implementation
• U-12 team - use free play to decide what to work on.• Roster size should be 12• Make four teams (balanced if possible)• You take two teams, your assistant coach takes the
other two.• Teams Play 10 minutes of keep away, the team with
the highest number of consecutive touches wins!• Wining teams play 10 more minutes against each
other, as do the non-winners.• You and your assistant Observe & Evaluate
Quality Session Planning and Implementation
Now you know what to work on!
How do you work on the team and individual weaknesses?
Create an Evaluation Chart for each player and the team.
What should the content of the evaluation chart be?
Age appropriate!
Quality Session Planning and Implementation
From your U-12 Coaching
Manual
Quality Session Planning and Implementation
Players age U-12 will experience: Attacking Objectives
Advance the ballScoreMaintain Possession
Defending Objectives Delay the opponentsPrevent Scoring Regain Possession
Quality Session Planning and Implementation
• What objective should our players emphasize?• It depends on who has the ball! What else?
– Where is the player on the field?– Where is the goal?– Where are teammates?– Where are opponents?– Where the ball is?– How much time is left?– What’s the score?
• Now that we know what objective to pursue, how to we achieve it???

Quality Session Planning and Implementation
During the U-12 season all players should have been introduced to all technical skills required to play the game. Our role is to be sure they can do those skills correctly. Players can’t to tactically what they can’t do technically!
What’s the problem for the coach?New Players!
But that is a good thing!
Quality Session Planning and Implementation
Player Evaluations (Charting): Coaches should also evaluate each player’s:
Attitude Work Rate Coach-ability
After the first practice and the first game you should know a lot more about the players than you did and you will be able to plan for future practices more efficiently…
Quality Session Planning and Implementation
Planning The Training Session How long should a training session last?
The activity portion of any training session should be the same as the length of the game.
The key word in this statement is “Activity”!!
No training session should be longer than 90 minutes. Players of ANY age group cannot physically and mentally perform longer than that effectively.
Quality Session Planning and Implementation
Training Plan Before each training session you should write a training plan.
What should this plan contain?
This plan should contain all the activities that you want to doalong with the time to be spent on each activity.
All training sessions must be broken down into the following parts.
They are:
Technical Warm up for tactical objective in Activities 1 & 11Activity 1 Activity IISmall sided matchCool down…

Warm-up
A correct and proper warm up is essential for the well being of the players.
It should also be used to prepare the athletes for the activity to be worked on.
If you are planning on working on passing, then step three of the warm up should lead into the passing activity.
Quality Session Planning and Implementation
Warm-Up
The warm up can be broken down into three parts.
What are they? – Light activity to warm the muscles– Dynamic stretching (Appendix D in AYSO U-
12 Coaching Manual, FIFA 11+)– Free play game based on the theme of the
training session
Quality Session Planning and Implementation
Post warm-up?• Technique/Tactical work• Technical and tactical build-up for the tactical
objective of the training session• Progression of Technical Build-Up
– Technique demonstrated with no pressure.– Technique demonstrated while under pressure
(passive to full, integrating decision making).– Technique demonstrated in match-like situation.

Most important thing about evaluating the
training session?
Was the training used in the next game?
Next thing to do?...
Quality Session Planning and Implementation
Amend the Training Now is the time to decide what should be
changed for the next training session.
By using the evaluation form any necessary
adjustments can be made.
This leads us back to what?...
