SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Theme: “The Father will give you the Spirit”

In today’s gospel, we see something going on. Jesus is going to die. On the

last evening before His death, they have gathered. He and His Apostles for

last supper. We can picture the scene. In a short while, Jesus will be arrested

and condemned to death. Before this happens, He wants to speak to His

friends. It is at this moment He tells them: “I shall ask my Father and he will

give you another Advocate, the Spirit.”

As I spoke those words “the Spirit”, what came to your mind? Perhaps you

are not too sure… Perhaps nothing clear came to you. Is it not true that for

many of us, the Spirit is the great unknown One? Or, we are used to name

Him as the Holy Spirit, when we bless ourselves: “In the name of the Father

and the Son, and the Holy Spirit”, but who is He really?

God the Father, we know somehow better. We know Him as the Creator of

all things, the Giver of life. We have learned that He is Our Father who cares

for us.

Jesus Christ, we know Him too. We believe He is the Son of God. We can

see Him in the gospel, a man . We hear His teachings, we see His miracles.

The past few Sundays, we have heard Him tell us: “I am the Shepherd, I am

the Way, the Truth and the Life.”

SEXTO DOMINGO DE PASCUA Tema: "El Padre te dará el Espíritu"

En el evangelio de hoy, vemos algo sucediendo. Jesús va a morir. En la últi-

ma noche antes de su muerte, se han reunido. Él y Sus Apóstoles para la últi-

ma cena. Podemos imaginar la escena. En poco tiempo, Jesús será arrestado

y condenado a muerte. Antes de que esto suceda, Él quiere hablar con Sus

amigos. Es en el momento que Él les dice: "Pediré a mi Padre y él os dará

otro Abogado, el Espíritu".

Cuando dije esas palabras "el Espíritu", ¿qué vino a tu mente? Tal vez usted

no está muy seguro ... Tal vez nada claro vino a usted. ¿No es cierto que para

muchos de nosotros, el Espíritu es el grande desconocido? O, estamos acos-

tumbrados a nombrarlo como el Espíritu Santo, cuando nos bendecimos a

nosotros mismos: "En el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo",

¿pero quién es él realmente?

Dios el Padre, sabemos de alguna manera mejor. Lo conocemos como el

Creador de todas las cosas, el que da la vida. Hemos aprendido que Él es

nuestro Padre que cuida de nosotros.

Jesucristo, nosotros también lo conocemos. Creemos que Él es el Hijo de

Dios. Podemos verlo en el evangelio, un hombre. Escuchamos Sus enseñan-

zas, vemos Sus milagros. Los últimos domingos, le hemos oído decir: "Yo

soy el Pastor, yo soy el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida". (Continua en la pagina 3)

Adults: Participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA). Infants to age 5: Parents and Godparents participate in Baptism program. Children (Grades 1-12): Participate in Religious Education Program. Please make an appointment to discuss preparation for the sacraments.

Pero el Espíritu Santo, ¿quién es? Incluso el nombre en

sí puede hacernos pensar en un fantasma. Porque, a me-

nudo usamos esta palabra "espíritu" cuando hablamos de

los espíritus de los muertos. Y los imaginamos como

fantasmas que regresan a la Tierra durante la noche,

¿no? Debido a esto, el cuadro de Dios como Espíritu o,

el Espíritu Santo, no es un cuadro claro para nosotros.

Lo vemos como a través de una niebla o una niebla.

Hoy, Jesús nos ayuda a entender un poco mejor quién es

el Espíritu Santo. Primero, sabemos que Él es Aquel que

el Padre nos enviará en el nombre de Jesús. Porque

Jesús le pide, el Padre nos enviará el Espíritu. Jesús no

quiere que sus amigos y nosotros no estemos solos e

indefensos. Él nos dice: "No los dejaré huérfanos" Jesús

nos asegura que realmente no estamos solos. Él dice del

Espíritu: "Él está con, él está en ti."

Y Jesús lo llama "el Abogado". ¿Qué es un abogado?

Esta palabra no es muy común. En nuestro lenguaje dia-

rio, hablamos más a menudo de una capa. Un defensor

es una capa cuyo trabajo especial es hablar por alguien,

defender a esa persona. En otras palabras, un defensor

está de pie junto a esa persona, cerca de él y le ayuda.

Esto es lo que el Espíritu Santo quiere ser para nosotros.

Usted puede preguntar: "¿qué diferencia hace en mi vi-

da? La gran diferencia es que ya no estás solo. Alguien,

el Espíritu de Dios está contigo.

Él está contigo para ayudarte. Para ayudarte a saber lo

que es agradable a Dios. Para ayudarle a seguir a Jesús.

Para ayudarle a tomar las decisiones correctas y vivir

verdaderamente como un cristiano. Él está ahí para de-

fenderte. Para apoyarte cuando te encuentres con críticas

y oposiciones, mientras intentas vivir tu vida cristiana.

Él allí para llevarte a la verdad. Jesús lo llama: "el Espí-

ritu de verdad". Él nos guía para que podamos ver dónde

está la verdad y vivir nuestra vida según la verdad.

Si alguno tuviera que comparecer ante un tribunal algún

día, estoy seguro de que todos querríamos tener cerca de

nosotros a alguien que nos dijera qué decir, cómo res-

ponder, qué hacer. En la vida de nuestra vida cristiana,

hay alguien que está listo para hacer esto por nosotros.

Es el Espíritu de Dios. Y Él está listo para hacer esto,

No por un solo día. No. Jesús ha prometido que el espí-

ritu es "estar con vosotros para siempre"

La fiesta de PENTICOST se acerca. En dos semanas;

Tiempo, recordaremos y celebraremos la venida del

Espíritu a nuestro mundo. Es un buen momento, hoy, de

recordarnos lo que es el espíritu, y lo que Él quiere ser,

para cada uno de nosotros.

(Continued from page 1) But the Holy Spirit, who is He? Even the name itself

can make us think of a ghost. For, we often use this

word “spirit” when we speak of the spirits of the

dead. And we picture them as ghosts coming back

on earth at nighttime, do we not? Because of this,

the picture of God as Spirit or, the Holy Spirit, is not

a clear picture for us. We see it as if through a mist

or a fog.

Today, Jesus helps us to understand a little better

who the Holy Spirit is. First, we know that He is the

One the Father will send to us in the name of Jesus.

Because Jesus asks Him, the Father will send the

Spirit to us. Jesus does not want either His friends

and us to be alone and helpless. He tells us: “I will

not leave you orphans” Jesus assures us that we are

really not alone. He says of the Spirit: “He is with,

he is in you”

And Jesus calls Him “the Advocate”. What is an

advocate? This word is not a very common one. In

our daily language, we speak more often of a law-

yer. An advocate is a lawyer whose special work is

to speak for someone, to defend that person. In oth-

ers words, an advocate stands by that person, near to

him and helps him.

This is what the Holy Spirit wants to be for us. You

may ask: “what difference does it make in my life?

The great difference is that you areno longer alone.

Someone, God’s own Spirit is with you.

He is with you to help you. To help you to know

what is pleasing to God. To help you follow Jesus.

To help you make the right decisions and live truly

as a Christian. He is there to defend you. To support

you when you meet with criticisms and opposition,

as you try to live your Christian life. He there to

lead you to the truth. Jesus calls Him: “the Spirit of

truth”. He guides us so we may see where the truth

is, and live our lives according to the truth.

If any us had to appear in court one day, I am sure

we would all want to have near us someone who

would tell us what to say, how to answer, what to

do. In the living of our Christian life, there is some-

one who is ready to do this for us. It is God’s own

Spirit. And He is ready to do this, Not for one day

only. No. Jesus has promised that the spirit is “to be

with you forever”

The Feast of PENTICOST is coming near. In two

weeks; time, we will recall and celebrate the com-

ing of the Spirit into our world. It is a good

time, today, to remind ourselves of what the

spirit is, and what He wants to be, for each one

us.
