According to Gartner, Fax is not about to disappear, but companies that ignore the changes in how fax is used and in the technologies in question will miss a strategic opportunity.
FAX
Email, voicemail, IM, conferencing, presence, collaboration, video, voice +
Cisco / Sagem Confidential - June 08
Financial institutions use fax to process multimillion-dollar transactions.
Large global investment companies log significant fax traffic with orders and confirmations from customers.
U.S. pharmacy chains use fax servers to log prescriptions, renewals, and clarifications from doctors in every state they serve.
Law firms use fax servers and fax machines to exchange marked-up contract drafts, as well as final signed versions, as legally valid means of communications.
A manufacturer of cleaning supplies uses fax to respond to requests for U.S. Material Safety Data sheets for emergencies. Requests may come from hospitals and fire departments with no e-mail or Web service.
Fax is a critical component of communication
Cisco / Sagem Confidential - June 08
So, what’s the problem with UC and Fax?
Even in converged IP organizations, fax still lags behind with: No integration to Unified Communications – Productivity Miss Costly, inefficient fax machines (i.e. toner & paper) Environmental wastes – Chemical landfill Analog / copper phone lines Specialized hardware to support legacy technology – Defeats the
purpose of convergence Unreliable VoIP ATAs create frequent failures – VoIP vs FoIP / T.38 No leverage of Network investment – No Storage, control or audit trail
Overall… Wrong approach from inception
AXP Fax solution solves the “FAX PROBLEM”

Positive Environmental Impact
Reduces paper use:
In a large company*, network faxing can eliminate up to one ton of paper use per day – or up to 200 tons a year.
Saves water:
7.57 million litres of fresh water are required to produce that year's worth of paper – enough to fill a city reservoir.
Preserves forests:
In only two years, our large company's fax paper use would have consumed a forest equal in size to New York Central Park, according to EPA statistics.
Cisco / Sagem Confidential - June 08
Saves energy:
Making just one day's worth of paper for fax uses enough electricity to power the average home for six months.
Cleaner planet:
The average used toner cartridge weighs 3 lbs. It is composed of 40% plastic. The plastic is made of engineering-grade polymers which take over 1,000 years to decompose.
Millions of empty toner and inkjet cartridges are thrown into the trash, ending up in our planet’s landfills or incinerators.
Millions of tax dollars needed to pay for additional landfill management.
