Multivendor Cloud Adoption is Increasing to Avoid Vendor Lock-In

As more enterprises settle on cloud as their primary, automatic preference for business

IT, we see increased adoption of multiple cloud platforms. This is not only to optimize the

portability of different services and applications, but also to help enterprises avoid provider

lock-in. Many enterprises now mandate the use of multiple cloud services providers. This

is an excellent business strategy; however, requires substantial knowledge and insight

regarding providers’ contracting and capabilities.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Public Cloud Adoption is Rising Among Enterprise Customers

COVID-19 has spurred the global adoption of public cloud services, as enterprises rush

to enable remote work and additional business and IT operational changes. Increased

emphasis is being placed on flexible, locally responsive and market-focused services

and providers that can deliver rapid deployment and reusability, manageability and

maintainability, scalability, agility, cost reduction, and standardization, all while helping

enterprises enable long-term, strategic cloud use.

Services Providers are Expanding Partner Initiatives and Investment.

The demand for the availability and flexibility of localized and market-focused services is

driving services providers to partner with smaller, regional and local providers as well as

more vertical/industry-positioned providers. It is also pushing larger providers to partner

with a growing range of tools and software developers to optimize market- and application-

specific client needs.

Adoption of Shared Responsibility Model is Gaining Traction

We see more enterprises entering shared responsibility models with AWS to reduce their

operational burden and help facilitate more efficient security and compliance management.

However, enterprises typically need guidance to help determine which services will be

their responsibility and how those services will integrate with their larger IT and business

environment(s).

THE U.S.:Although we certainly expected the U.S. enterprise spending on cloud IT outsourcing and business process outsourcing to grow through 2020, the business realities of COVID-19 have catalyzed greater and faster growth than anyone could have foreseen. Prior to COVID-19, most enterprise investment by the U.S. firms were built around digital business transformation. Since COVID-19 struck in earnest, most firms’ primary cloud investments have been in baseline infrastructure (Infrastructure-as-a-service or IaaS) and related security services. This helped to lay a foundation for expanded future digital transformation. However, it has also forced most enterprises to invest heavily in cloud, much sooner than had been planned. In many cases, this involves spending on different services with different providers. We expect the overall cloud spending to continue, but for most firms the path forward will change based on their unexpected investment emphasis.

AWS and Microsoft Azure continue with the highest spending growth among the U.S.-based enterprise clients. Google, IBM and others are also growing substantially. AWS holds the highest overall market share across all aspects of enterprise IT, while Azure’s growth is primarily based on modernization and migration of Microsoft Office environments.

The increasingly de facto multi-cloud reality for most large U.S. enterprises may soon become an omni-cloud necessity that alters the role and value of cloud services providers, especially managed services providers (MSPs). Portability of applications and data within and between clouds is rapidly becoming the standard strategic approach for more user firms. This suggests a strong and growing need for complex, managed services, especially those emphasizing and optimizing integration of multi-cloud interfaces, systems and data. The MSPs of the near future will look more like a traditional systems integrator (SI).

UNIQUE GEOGRAPHY TRENDS

GERMANY:Privacy is an important aspect for clients in Germany. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) increases the data privacy rules, and the invalid EU-U.S. Privacy Shield makes the cooperation with the U.S. providers difficult. So many clients in Germany prefer cloud-/AWS-providers based in Germany or the EU.

The COVID-19 crisis promotes work from home; this transformation often must be executed as early as possible. As a result, companies adopt cloud solutions, which make such transformations easier. Many of these solutions are based on AWS platforms; therefore,

AWS solutions are becoming increasingly important.

designing and operating reliable, secure, efficient and cost-effective systems on

the cloud.

� Industry specific solutions/services: Service providers are more focused on

developing services and solutions that are used by enterprise customers from several

industry verticals.

� Strong partnership ecosystem: Service providers bolster the partnership with AWS

across the globe to expand their footprint and local presence. The service providers

also engage in the acquisition of regional/local players to expand their presence and

build a robust partnership.
