GMHC: Walking in Our 30th YearDear Friends:
The year 2012 marks the 30th anniversary of Gay Men’s HealthCrisis (GMHC), the oldest AIDS service organization in the world.Forty-five thousand of our friends and family members joining usfor the 27th annual AIDS Walk New York on Sunday, May 20 is anincredibly powerful way to commemorate this anniversary.
We are so grateful for the continuing support of many peoplethroughout the tri-state area who walk each year to help raisemuch-needed funds. We look forward to meeting our new friends who will participatefor the first time. Thank you – we do need every one of you!
GMHC now has two homes. Last April, we moved into our expanded home at 446 West33rd Street (between 9th and 10th Avenues) where we provide care services for nearly11,000 men, women, and families living with and affected by HIV and AIDS. Our clientsare able to access life-sustaining support through our meals and food pantry programs, mental health counseling, legal assistance, linkages to housing and medical care – andmuch more. We also expanded our HIV prevention and testing programs in the newGMHC Center for HIV Prevention at 224 West 29th Street (between 7th and 8thAvenues). This center includes a flourishing leadership-development program thatreaches youth, ages 13 to 19.
In our public policy work, we continue to support the implementation of the NationalHIV/AIDS Strategy, now with the new Director of the Office of National AIDS Policy, GrantColfax, MD. We are especially vigilant in our advocacy to stem government budget cuts inHIV prevention programs and care services. New York City continues to be the epicenterof the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the U.S. Until there is a cure, education and support arecritical to reduce new HIV infections and provide care for those living with HIV/AIDS.
This means the money that you raise at AIDS Walk New York takes on a deeper level ofimportance today – even as we remember those we have lost to AIDS during the past 30 years. So much has changed since the beginning of this devastating epidemic, yetwhat has remained constant are the walkers, volunteers, supporters, and sponsors ofAIDS Walk New York, an extraordinary foundation of support in GMHC’s history.
As we walk together in GMHC’s 30th year, we think of each of you as part of ourremarkable and ever-growing family of AIDS activists. Thank you for your generousdedication and help.

community in the fight for marriageequality. Two years later – continuing tospread messages of love, acceptance, and support – the organization formedits first AIDS Walk New York team. Thatyear, Broadway Impact became the AIDSWalk’s tenth-highest fundraising team, with 114 walkers raising more than$50,000. Their exemplary teamworkdemonstrates the incredible potentialrealized when good hearts and ambitiousminds work together for a commoncause.
AIDS Walk Fundraising Specialist Christopher Mendoza recalls, “Eachmorning we analyzed our teams’ fundraising progress. We were thrilled to seeBroadway Impact's continual climb by thousands of dollars day after day.”
The Broadway community has seen firsthand the devastating impact ofHIV/AIDS, and has taken an unprecedented leadership role in the fight against
its spread. Broadway Impact is a truereflection of that role.
Broadway Impact’s 2011 TeamLeader, Angela Johnson, emphasizedthe camaraderie of their team. “Lastyear’s success was sparked byconnecting the hearts of our TeamMembers,” she said. “I haveunwavering gratitude to the team fortheir involvement and willingness toreach out to their various networks.”

Walking in Memory of Larry Adelman and Steve DamianoBy John Denissen and Kate Rosenblum
W e stand on the shoulders of those who have gonebefore us. Today's 45,000 AIDS Walk New Yorkparticipants very much stand on the shoulders of the
event’s early organizers – brave and committed pioneers from the1980s. In the last year, we've lost two such seminal leaders –Larry Adelman and Steve Damiano*. Both of these men joined theAIDS Walk movement in its infancy, and their contributions canstill be felt today.
Larry Adelman plotted, planned, and executed the movementof record crowds through Central Park and the streets of NewYork. He also brought in the enormous quantities of donatedrefreshments needed to keepour participants fed, hydrated, and feeling welllooked-after. Larry was alsoresponsible for recruiting andtraining a band of activists toblanket New York City withAIDS Walk materials. He wasa native of this city – direct –even brash, and strong, andfunny and all about the result.
AIDS Walk Founder andProducer, Craig Miller, says ofhim, “Larry was one of a kind; as vivacious andcompassionate a man as Ihave known; a true originaland one who played a crucialrole in the early years of theAIDS Walks.”
For more than ten years, Steve Damiano worked harder, longer, and smarter on AIDS Walk New York than just aboutanyone. He virtually created the Teams Department – now thebedrock of AIDS Walk fundraising. Long after Steve moved on towork with other nonprofits, he continued to volunteer at nearlyevery subsequent AIDS Walk New York. Reflecting on last year’sevent, Miller recalls, “There he was with the rest of us, slogging itout with the elements in Central Park with his band of merryvolunteers. Once again, a rainy spring dawn turned brighter bymid-morning. Once again, Steve Damiano was there… The way itis supposed to be.”
To be sure, Steve and Larry were about as different as twopeople could be. Steve was soft-spoken, calm, and cool, with agentle management approach that earned him the nickname“Saint Steve.” Larry was more extroverted, even “bossy” – bothled a group of volunteers that would happily endure the mostchallenging of situations because of their admiration and respectfor their leader. Both also hired, mentored, and supervised staff –many of whom have credited Steve or Larry with much of theirearly professional development. “We followed them through helland high water, knowing that under their leadership we’daccomplish loads of great work, and have fun doing it,” says
Jennifer Singleton, successor to Steve in theTeams Department.
“It's hard now to fathomjust how horrible the AIDSepidemic was back then,”recalls John Denissen, himself a key veteran of theearly AIDS Walk organizingyears. “Young men – clearlyvery sick – were coming in tovolunteer. There wasenormous stigma and fearand hatred aimed at all of us.Funerals were very regularoccasions. But there wasexcitement, even magic then, too, that I doubt I'll ever seeagain in my lifetime. It was inthe work and the dedication
and the wonderful successes created by Craig, Richard, Laurie,Larry, Steve, and many, many more pioneers of the AIDS Walksand AIDS activism.”
Leif Green, Senior Director of Creative Services at MZA Events, agrees: “With the help of leaders like Larry and Steve, we movedmountains together and, I believe, saved the lives of countlessmen and women in the process. Believe it or not, we also laughed a lot – and loved almost every minute of our efforts.”
*Each died in their early 50s, and of causes unrelated to HIV/AIDS.

Meet Rita FischerBy Krishna Stone and Kate Rosenblum
Meet Rita Fischer: “I am 88 years old. I have collected$750,000 for AIDS Walk New York. I want to tell youwhy I support GMHC and AIDS Walk New York.”
Yes – Rita has, over the past 27 years, raised three quartersof a million dollars. She is one of an extraordinary and elitegroup of AIDS Walk fundraisers known as Star Walkers –participants who pledge to raise $1,000 or more. Star Walkersare our most dedicated and passionate supporters. We think ofthem as AIDS WALK ROYALTY. You will spot them on May 20thdonning bejeweled crowns at the Walk. This year we areshining a special light on Rita – a woman who has workedtirelessly to bring an end to this epidemic.
Rita aspires to one day reach one million dollars in AIDSWalk donations. Her involvement stretches back to the firstAIDS Walk New York in 1986. Two years prior, Rita and herhusband, Alex, joined P-Flag (Parents and Friends of Lesbiansand Gays) after their son told them he was gay. She recalls,“Meetings we first attended were at the height of the epidemic. Many parents shared about the death of children. They were invery deep mourning. I decided we needed to do something. Wehad to raise money.” Rita and Alex raised $300 for their firstWalk.
Looking back, Rita remembers how little was understoodabout AIDS: “People were afraid to drink from a fountain or tosit on a toilet because theyworried about catching thedisease. There was a lot ofignorance.”
Reflecting on why shecontinues walking and raisingfunds each year, Rita states,“It is the most amazing thingto see the number of peoplewho come out and supportthis. I want AIDS to befinished. That’s what I wouldlike to see before I close myeyes for good.”
Rita’s constant effort anddedication toward this goal fillus with hope and inspiration. To turn her dream into areality, she urges everyone tocontinue supporting GMHCand AIDS Walk New York.
I know you have what it takes to be a Star Walker! Call me at 212.807.WALK to join the Club! I’ll be here to helpyou reach for the stars and attain your fundraising goal!

Duane Reade Surpasses $1 Million in AIDS Walk Support
Over the past decade of supporting AIDS Walk New York,Duane Reade has hit an incredible milestone, becomingthe first sponsor in AIDS Walk history to surpass
$1 million in sponsorship of the event. In 2010, Duane Reade became AIDS Walk New York’s first-
ever Presenting Sponsor and launched a $1 pin-up campaign inall of its more than 250 stores. Together, the pin-up sales alongwith the Duane Reade Foundation’s contribution totaled$324,371, which, at the time, was the highest one-yearcontribution from a sponsor. Last year Duane Reade surpassedeven that, achieving a single-year, record-breaking totalcontribution of $500,000.
“New Yorkers have chosen Duane Reade as theirneighborhood drugstore for over 100 years, and we deeply valuea partnership that helps us give back to our community,” saidRobin Costa, President of the Duane Reade Foundation.
This year, Duane Reade aims to continue developing itssupport of the New York community. Initiatives like the HIVCenters of Excellence – a Duane Reade program that offers HIVtesting and treatment counseling in select locations – haveaffirmed the company’s efforts to combat HIV/AIDS.
“With the opening of many new HIV Centers of Excellence, and this year’s AIDS Walk Pin-Up Program in the midst ofanother hugely successful campaign, we could not be moreproud of our work to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic,” said Costa.“We’re especially grateful to our customers who stand with us bypurchasing AIDS Walk Pin-Ups – we could not have reached thislevel without them,” she added.
Duane Reade demonstrates a special brand of corporatecompassion, providing participants and supporters a collectiveopportunity to influence our communities for the better.Reaching the $1 million mark is yet more proof of theiroutstanding dedication.

All About My Mother: A Different Face of HIV/AIDS
By Jeff Gladstone
My parents were drug abusers and frequented recklessparties while neglecting their ten children. Sufferingfrom drug-induced schizophrenia, my mother’s erratic
behavior landed her in prison in 1995.I was home alone one day when a nurse from the prison
called and asked to speak with my mother's parents. After I liedand stated I was her father, the nurse disclosed that my motherhad a life-threatening disease. She couldn’t spell it out for me, butI understood what she was saying. That life-threatening diseasewas AIDS. I feared my mother might die never seeing me again.
For a decade, I kept my mother’s AIDS diagnosis a secret.HIV/AIDS was not something discussed in my family orcommunity. When my mother was released from prison in 2005,she returned home with one T cell. It was no longer possible tokeep her disease a secret. This left my family no option but to facethe reality of AIDS. There were two choices: support her or watchher die.
At first my family feared contracting HIV from my mother. Shewas kept isolated when any guests arrived, especially children, and was restricted to her own utensils, bathroom, and phone. Herown family was too afraid to even touch her.
Over time, I taught my family about HIV/AIDS and they beganto let go of their ignorance. With their support, my mother hasbeen able to thrive, maintain her health, and feel loved again.
I feel it is my responsibility to show the world that HIV canaffect anyone, even my mother and our family – though we arenot the stereotypical face of the epidemic. Education is the onlyway to fight the stigma of HIV/AIDS. I support AIDS Walk NewYork and GMHC because they raise money for outreach, prevention, life-saving programs and services, and education. This is our best hope for a world without AIDS.

care, home-delivered meals, women’s and children’s services, and much more throughout the tri-state area for people living with the disease.Through their participation in the AIDS Walk, these Community Partners raise urgently needed funds that directly benefit their organizations.
Presenting the Community Partners of 2012:

DID YOU KNOW...
In the United States,1 in 5 of those infected
with HIV each year isunaware of their status.
AIDS Walk New York will quench the thirst and satisfy theappetites of an estimated 45,000 walkers as they make theirway along the 6.2-mile route. While this is no simple task,
PepsiCo’s support year after year has enabled the AIDS Walk to takecare of all its participants. From Gatorade to granola bars, donatedPepsiCo products account for one-half of the truckloads of food anddrink distributed at the four AIDS Walk checkpoints.
In 2006 PepsiCo gave the AIDS Walk a ton of potato chips –literally – we did the math! That year’s donation of 30,000 bags ofFrito-Lay chips launched a longstanding partnership between PepsiCoand the AIDS Walk. PepsiCo now donates nearly 100,000 food anddrink items annually to AIDS Walk New York.
“PepsiCo is a huge part of what keeps our walkers fed andhydrated along the route. There’s a part of PepsiCo at everycheckpoint,” enthuses Natalie Lembeck, AIDS Walk Event OperationsSpecialist.
PepsiCo spirit can be found in numerous aspects of the AIDSWalk. In addition to food and beverage donations, dozens of PepsiCoemployees volunteer each year. Reflecting on these volunteer efforts,Michael Aiello of PepsiCo says, “Everyone has big smiles on theirfaces; everyone is taken with the experience; and everyone is thrilledto see all those folks come together to fight AIDS.”
Additionally, PepsiCo employees, family, and friends have beenwalking as a team for the past six years. Their collaborative effortshave reeled in a cumulative total of $60,000 since 2006!
When asked about their company’s involvement over the last sixyears, Eric Harnischfeger, PepsiCo Senior Director, simply says, “Wedo it for the right reasons.” Get a taste of PepsiCo at the AIDS Walkon Sunday, May 20.
PepsiCo mascots support AIDS Walk New York. If all PepsiCodonations from the last six years were stacked on top of each
other they would equal the height of 14 Empire State Buildings!
