ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN IN THE METAL INDUSTRIES

March 2016 Volume 3, Issue 3

AWMI METALLICMISSIVES

On February 16, 2016 the NY AWMI chapter made association history by hosting the first ever webinar meeting for its members. Despite climbing a steep learning curve, the meeting proceeded without a hitch. The attendance was lighter than hoped, but those who participated were engaged and expressed support for both the meeting format, and the topic. The NY chapter intends to use webinars for educational type topics targeting the next gen members who perhaps don't have the time or funds for a dinner meeting but are eager to expand their knowledge base. #IncreasedSkillSet

#JerryWasGreat Our speaker, Mr. Jerry Nelson, founding partner of Carnegie Steel Partners and long-time sales executive from RG Steel, ISG, Nucor, & Bethlehem Steel, started out by reviewing the basics of how one provides value to one’s customer. Some of the keys are to get to know your customer and

understand how they are using your product. As the sales person, it is your responsibility to know your products better than anyone else and to know how they can be properly matched with your customer needs. He pointed out that it’s almost embarrassing at times the way that people don’t understand all the ways that their products can bring value and challenged the group to take the time each year to refresh their knowledge on their product offerings. About one-third of customers are purely focused on price, while the balance are at least open to hearing what other services or products you can offer. Investigate beyond the obvious and don’t be so busy talking that you forget to listen. Question everything and thoroughly review what your customer

is doing including things like freight alternatives, material substitutions and optimum quantity purchases. Individuals and companies that adapt quickly will be the most successful. All things being equal, if customers like you, that will be the tie-breaker in a buy decision. He finished with business principals from The Godfather: It’s Just Business. Don’t take it personally. Respect the

challenges of your customers. Don’t be angry at someone for doing their job. And never sacrifice your integrity.
