ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN IN THE METAL INDUSTRIES Founded in 1981 by women for the nurture and development of those in the industry without adequate support. Comprised of 1,200 members in 21 chapters in the USA and Canada. Purpose is to develop leadership and business acumen in members. Chapters run as separate entities providing a platform for members to learn and improve organizational skills. Mill tours allow members access to metal manufacturing facilities. Regular meetings showcasing key industry speakers and workshops increase the knowledge of members, and provide networking opportunities. Annual conference featuring industry and motivational speakers Get Acquainted with AWMI 2015 Platinum & Gold Corporate Members Four generations of Nucor’s chief executives have made it a priority to support the association by speaking at chapter industry dinners. Senior executives of the top USA steel producers have supported chapter fundraising efforts by donating items, employee time, and underwriting travel. The association by-laws were changed in 2009 to allow men to serve on local chapter boards. Association membership is one-fifth male. John Babson of SteelSpider.com, a member of the Pittsburgh chapter, hosts database services and manages mailing lists free of charge to the association’s chapters.
