From the many construction experiences Ive played,

opening roads and location of Awi-21 at the Gunung

Salak Geothermal Project in 2008 was the best

experience I felt phenomenal. Why is that? This I say

so because we fave a tremendous challenge to do it.

Challenges are the very nature of weather is notfriendly; heavy rains and cold weather that lastednearly every day, the tight schedule given by theProject Manager and the insistence of The Drilling

Department, contours of the land of cliffs andravines in which tolerates no mistakes indirecting heavy equipment , the volume of soilthat is very much to be moved approximately172,000-m3 of which must be handled with supercareful to avoid landslides, environmental spill, pieces of land that is very deep to reach

designed level, the demands to work as safely aspossible and challenge the project and the dailyproblems that would arise.

Still remembered in my mind at the time of theconstruction work begins, at the time of construction,drilling-rig move to the location, and an award fromthe Project Manager.Representing all that is just thephotographs that I will keep continue and I will notwaste it, because that is a very importantdocumentation that will be a silent witness of my life

    journey.

My highest gratitude goes to:Bpk. Agus M. Soedarsa, Project Manager, fordirection, guidance and trust given,Bpk. DR.Suharwanto, Project Engineer Civil, fordirection and technical consideration,Bpk. Sodikin, Senior Construction Foreman, fordedication and hard work,Bpk. Agung Budhiarto, Site Safety Engineer, fordirection, guidance, supervision for our workconstantly in a state of survivors,Bpk. Eddy Supardi, Surveyor, for accuracy, hard workand cooperation,Bpk. Ayi Sukaryat, Surveyor, for accuracy, hard workand cooperation,My wife Indah Sirait, for her patience waiting for me togo home at night in a dirty muddy and wet and alwayssupported me in prayer,PT. WIRANA JAYATAMA ABADI (contractor heavyequipment provider),

PT. BINA RASANO ENGINEERING (contractormanpower provider).

And all parties that I can not mention one by one, without your support Awi-21 location would notnecessarily be realized on-time.

Next are photos of construction :

Regional left is the entrance road to the startinglocation Awi-21, this was a T-junction and no onethinks that this junction will be changed to be anintersection . This is a fork of Post-2 or T-junction to-1Awi, Awi Awi-16 and-13.This picture was made on September 2, 2008.

Picture-002 :Before the job cuts land (cut and fill) is done, weveformed and sent a special team to secure the flow ofwater, river, springs, valleys and villages, for

Picture-003 September 09, 2008Some excavator units and dumptruck began to cutand lift the soil and bring a piece of land to the placethat had been predetermined. In this process muchneeded accuracy of a survey team to determine thesoil cutting and designed levels and close cooperationbetween construction team and the operator. Thanksto Bpk. Agus M. Soedarsa that gives confidence to

me to determine the number and types of heavyequipment required.

A pavement that was so until the STA 0 +100, stoneinstalled because the carrying capacity of soil onMount Salak is very low and considering the needs ofexploration road for heavy equipment of drilling rigslater on so that this road should be able to supportloads as heavy as 60 ton/m2. After the stones are

arranged such that the cavities are filled by crushedrock and compact.

Picture-005Rows of duty excavators that dig, cut, pile and lift thesoil to a disposal location. This area includes areasthat are difficult to conquer because it is very deep to

reach designed level approximatelly 32-m deep, anda very difficult area since is filled with large stonesand massive, so we spent a month more to getthrough. It's an uphill battle and challenging.Thankyou to all field employees to be brave, tireless anddedicated to vanquish.

Picture-006Incredible struggle to conquer a massive pile ofstones at the station 0 +150. It is estimated that a

volcanic rock that the material we use to make thepavement the way up to the drilling area Awi-21. Ittook more than a month to vanquish with fourexcavators and eight dumptrucks and almost seventyemployees. We are very distressed because the rightis a very deep ravine.

The project was undertaken with strict safety

controls. All employees are required to use adequate

personal protective equipment. Until the completion of

this project is not recorded any accident resulting in

the cessation of project. All employees are required to

follow safety tool-box meetings every morning when

the work will begin, as did the calculation on-board

personnel to ensure the same number of permanent

employees upon termination of employment on that

    day

Picture-008Big pile of volcanic rocks at station 0 +150 to 0 +200actually complicate and slow down this roadconstruction work. To anticipate, we continue to workon the next part of this area while we also continue todo so everything is done simultaneously. The difficultpart for us is not possible this way in the re-routebecause of the high cliff to the left while the right sidedeep ravines

One unit of excavator who served at the front as the

opening forests are crucial.Operation and directionofthis unit are very important because this exavatorfacing an unknown area in front. Anticipation errorscan cause this excavator fell into a deep ravine. Iassign someone with experience of mountain forest tosteer this excavator and the unit itself must beoperated by a senior operator. At first I could notimagine that this area should be lowered as deep asnine meters to achieve the desired level of road sothat the drilling wellpad level could be achieved.Where else would I dispose of land as the result ofcuts since the left or right side of this road there areno more areas to store cut soil. This is a very big thechallenge for us and we miraculously get through it.In such circumstances we are still concentrating to

not destroy nature, this cut soil managementtechniquest are critical in this type of constructionsuch as this.

This is the original photo and conditions Awi-21

drilling locations after clearing large trees. Land issloping and narrow the site requires a maximum ofsixteen meters to obtain a minimum area of onehectare needs for drilling operations. This is atremendous challenge because of how much soilshould be transferred, where, and how long would ittakes to it while drilling schedule more urgent. At first we could only contemplate, whether this is alocation that is intended and why it should beimposed if you see conditions like this.

    Picture-011

For those who do not follow the construction of Awi-

21, this is the first condition and full of narrow gap inthe frame on the left and right. Looks first excavatorhad made it into the location and directly in charge ofcleaning the land. This is a peak and should belowered as deep as sixteen meters to achieve thedesired level and the area required for drillingoperations. It's a tough challenge because of the cutsoil can not be disposed of to the left and right since itwill result in landslides and floods and mudflow intothe river Cisaketi and will close operations of PLNpower plant, what a mistake that can not be tolerated

One month following the first excavator made it into

the location, next excavators went in and startedworking cut and fill to reach required elevation thathas been determined, The day to day operation is justworking on the dispose of soil, how to make the pass-trough road for dumptruck can go in and remove thesoil to the disposal Awi-4 , when there is no road thecut-soil can only be temporarily placed while waitingfor the road was constructed. Excavators are also incharge of making the dam as a soil disposal area.

While wellpad on-progressing, the road keepsconstructed. This is the station 0 +600 to 0+750. Different soil composition we met here becausehere in the form of sand all of which can be used for

masonry work. Three excavators we use to build theroad at this location to the specified elevation. It isindeed a challenging job and we want to experienceagain. Our hope is the next generation can do this jobbetter, safer and faster. Look at the blue plastic sheeton the right side which is used to cover the temporary

disposal of soil from being washed away when raincomes.

    Picture-014

Once the road is constructed then dumptruck units

moved in to transporting cut-soil to the disposal site /disposal at Awi-4 and Quarry area. It took long

enough to reach the disposal site so that the total

dumptruck that we use are sixteen units. Because it is

new road will require extra attention when using it

because the risk of road vehicles vanish or slipping

into the valley and since the slope of the road is very

extreme, the soil that was taken in dumptruk should

be a little, it is risky because the dumptruck could not

climb the slope smoothly and left the worker in the

line of fire while constructing masonry drainage.

Location Awi-21 is a location that is surrounded by

deep ravines, making it necessary for the process of

stabilizing and strengthening the slope. Necessaryconstruction of gabion mattress and gabion wall along

hundreds of meters of terraced for this drilling location

is safe, spacious and strong. It takes a special way to

accumulate land in the space behind the gabion wall

for fast stable and does not cause gabion shift.

Retrofitting of gabion itself is done using steel pipe

piles 8 "and 6" while soil filling the room of which is

mixed with cement and lime to fast dry and dense and

    compacted carefully with excavator track.

    Picture-016

After six months of construction took place finished

road was built so that everyone can concentrate to

build wellpad Awi-21. Construction process such that

although the soil is not depleted but making sump and

pump pit in the background was done. The main

concentration at this stage is to flatten the hill in the

center and stabilize the soil around the site, and

flatten the location at a predetermined level. Not all

soil disposed of, only the bad soil and organic matters

must be removed while the soil with good

composition, fine and dry can be used for

embankment material to around this location so

wellpad can be construct broad and strong.

This picture was made on March 21, 2009

    Picture-017

While depleting the hill in the middle of location, the

construction of other facilities to continue include

sump pond and pump pit. This is a process that

requires precision measurement by surveyor for the

wall that is formed in accordance with the design.Installation of plastic liner is done by specialized

contractors for the results right, good and no leaks,

while this is done the walls are made of pre-cast at

Awi-4 fabrication yard to save the construction time

    so everything was done simultaneously.

    Picture-018

Having exhausted all soil / hill in the middle of wellpadground, sump pit and pump has been constructed,

WDS pipeline is completed in the install, all is securedand the edge of the ravines stabilized already, andhas been declared ready for drilling operations, thelocation be submitted to the department for furtherdrilling operations. Truly remarkable work has beencompleted along with the entry of drilling equipmentand all the accessories. No one else who feels proudto have completed this task correctly, safely and ontime.Only those involved in it and will be a pride thatwill never be forgotten for a living. Let this be a livingtestimony to how we had fought for the interests ofthe people in this country since the opening of the

location of Awi-21 steam supply to PLN aremaintained.
