Overview

The award winning Intellicone® system is based on a modular wireless sensor network. Originally

developed in collaboration with the highway maintenance industry, it enables the transformation of

existing temporary traffic barrier equipment into an electronic safety perimeter. As a result the system

can detect a barrier strike by a vehicle or the malicious removal of a barrier and relay an alert to a crew

alarm near the workforce irrespective of their distance from the barrier. This enables the workforce to

take evasive action and to reinstate the barrier when it is safe to do so. Contactless sensors enable

detection of works access and work zone breaches by vehicles, plant & equipment and people. In

addition to functioning as an audio-visual alarm the crew alarm will also send text messages of its status

to a site supervisor and upload the same information including GPS location onto the Intellicone®

webportal. This enables automatic status and deployment reporting.

Benefits

Intellicone® is very easy to deploy. For example in highway maintenance, due to the integration of the

sensor technology within standard cone lamps traffic management can be deployed as usual. The

activation of the portable crew alarm (Portable Site Alarm) is also very simple with clear visual indicators

showing system deployment status and alarm.

Case studies / usage

Intellicone is used by a range of term maintenance contractors in the UK including Aone+ (Colas, Costain,

CH2M Hill), Connect Plus Services, Balfour Beatty, Skanska, Enterprise Mouchel, Bear Scotland and HW

Martin amongst others. Over 100 systems are currently in use. Several case studies can be found on

www.intellicone.co.uk. Users have reported the early detection of members of the general public

attempting to move cones at slip road closures on many occasions as well as the detection of taper

strikes and vehicles entering work areas through access points. In all cases the workforce was given

advance warning of potentially dangerous situations enabling them to take evasive action.

Applications - Highways

Intellicone is a modular system that can be used for most temporary road maintenance work sites. In

highway, trunk road, urban and rural work environments it can be used for full road closures, lane

closures, lane change overs, tapers, contraflow, unmanned sites and for the creation of safe working

environments. The latter also includes managing man machine interface where heavy plant and

equipment are in use. Intellicone is also suitable for use on utility project worksites.

Applications – Urban & Interurban

Faced with a congested work environment in construction, utility and local government scenarios

Intellicone can provide an effective advance warning system highlighting non-compliant or unsafe

practices. Tactile deployment of the range can provide increased general public segregation, remote

notification of malicious site equipment removal, protection of heavy plant and wireless transmission

of lateral safety zones capable of detecting both pedestrian and vehicle traffic. To accompany the

obvious audio/visual status indicators, the on-board technology provides full data collection properties

and wireless smart phone connectivity.

Applications – Rail

The technology platform enclosed within the intellicone product capability is a unique mix of different

features well positioned to assist with the growing challenges of rail infrastructure and track and rolling

stock operations delivering benefits in safety, efficiency and quality with respect to personal track safety

and the temporary work site. Created to be deployed as enhancements to the existing SSOW

agreements with the regulators. It can be used effectively as an electronic site warden, speed traps at

temporary speed restrictions, hazard demarcation within the limits of a possession, to dynamically

illuminate the web of the rail wirelessly as heavy plant operates along the rail providing improved

adjacent line open identification and to create both safety perimeters and exclusion zones around

man/machine interfaces and constrained worker proximity tasks. The essence of the solution is built

on a simple, quick to deploy intelligent work apparatus that provides a flexible yet complete site safety

solution that is transferable across a wide variety of operations.

Portable Site Alarms

The Portable Site Alarm (PSA) is the heart of an Intellicone system. It connects to contact and contactless

sensors surrounding it, instantly creating a safer working environment. There are two versions of the

PSA, the ‘Contractor’ version and the ‘Foreman’ version. The Contractor version acts as a local audio

visual alarm, responding to any breach of Intellicone sensors. The Foreman has additional functionality.

It is equipped with a GPRS/GSM and GPS system, which enables it to be connected to secondary

Foreman alarms, thereby enabling the creation of a site of any size and complexity. In addition, the

Foreman also sends status text messages to selected personnel and uploads data onto the Intellicone

web portal.

System overview

Intellicone is fully modular and based on a number of main system components. It is also possible to

combine Intellicone equipment with the ultrasonic beam technology which can be placed across open

gates or around major plant and equipment.

Intellicone® System

Portable Site Alarm - Foreman

Local audio visual alarm plus equipped with GPRS/GSM and GPS. This enables pairing of multiple alarms over unlimited distance enabling use with multiple crews on large worksites. GSM and GPS also enable text

messages to be sent to selected site personnel and enable the Intellicone webportal which will display usage information.

Intellicone Traffic Management Unit (TMU)

Has the same capability as the Foreman Portable Site Alarm minus the audiovisual alarm function. It is capable of receiving alerts from nearby

sensors and can be paired to Intellicone Foreman over unlimited distance. The remote transceiver has an in-built motion detector which will arm

after deployment. This means that it will detect malicious removal. It can therefore also be used to secure barriers or major plant & equipment.
