What is TUBERCULOSIS? Tuberculosis(TB) is an infectious disease usually caused by the bacteria Mycobacteriumtuberculosis.

Tuberculosis generally affects thelungs, but can also affect other parts of the body.

Tuberculosis isspread through the airwhen people infected with TB cough, spit, speak, or sneeze.

One-third of the world's population is thought to be infected with TB.

Symptoms of TBPulmonaryIf a tuberculosis infection does become active, it most commonly involves the lungs.

Symptoms may includechest painand a extended cough producing sputum.

Occasionally, people maycough out bloodin small amounts, and in very rare cases.

Extra pulmonaryIn 1520% of active cases, the infection spreads outside the lungs, causing other kinds of TB.

Extra pulmonary TB occurs more commonly inimmunosuppressedpersons and young children.

Causes of T.B.MycobacteriaThe main cause of TB isMycobacterium tuberculosis, a small,aerobic, non-motilebacillus.

Itdividesevery 16 to 20 hours, which is an extremely slow rate compared with other bacteria, which usually divide in less than an hour.

Prevention from spreading infectionTB patients should:stay in places which are well ventilated.cover his mouth while coughing.Spend time outdoors as much as possible.If possible, sleep alone in a separate, adequately ventilated room.Spend as little time as possible on public transport and other public places.avoid staying in crowdie places.
