EXECUTIVE dEaN’s sCHOLar CARA TIMPANI – BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HONOURS) IN BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES Cara Timpani first came to Victoria University in 2008 to study the Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences on a Deans scholarship.
Throughout her degree, Cara has maintained a high distinction average, and at the end of her second year was offered a chance to undertake a summer research scholarship – an offer normally made only to finishing 3rd year students. It was during this research scholarship that she discovered a passion for research and the excitement new discovery can bring.
A highlight of Cara’s final year of undergraduate study was her work on a minor research project investigating possible metabolic defects in muscular dystrophy – a project designed to shift the entire thinking of the way we understand this disease. Cara was a most deserving recipient of the Outstanding Final Year Student Award in 2010.
In 2011, Cara completed Honours, which is a full research year, to further her work in metabolic dysfunction in muscular dystrophy. She again excelled, gaining the highest mark in her cohort and has been awarded a Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship to undertake her doctoral studies.
Cara intends to begin her PhD studies later in 2012, and the School of Biomedical and Health Science looks forward to welcoming her again on campus as a postgraduate student.

CONdUCTING rEsEarCH Is a CarEEr
Every country has its own large national research organisations with different research and development (R&D) profiles. These organisations employ numerous researchers who work for well defined R&D or RTD (Research and Technology Development) projects within their organisational frameworks.
There are numerous research specialisations. For research business institutions, interdisciplinary profiles of researchers are increasingly being requested. They have to adapt to new objectives and to cope with systems, equipment and problems unknown to them. Therefore, one of their important tasks is to cooperate with academics and researchers.
At Victoria University, we offer Summer Research Scholarships for high achievers who wish to make a mark in their research career. Award holders who are interested in a Summer Research Scholarship should consult their relevant academic coordinators within their Schools.
