SpaceTime Student Competition & ExhibitionCurator Dena Elisabeth Eber Associate

Professor and Chair, Digital Arts, Bowling Green

State University

The SpaceTime competition is an international juried exhibition for currently enrolled students working in computer graphics and digital arts. In this exhibition students have the opportunity to show some of the more creative, innovative, and meaningful artistic uses of new computer graphics technology. It is often the students who are able to see an artistic application of a digital tool that experts discounted as something meant for a completely different purpose. The expressive works on display this year represent students who have taken the computer graphics technology that they have grown up with and have created evocative art as they would with any art tool, be it pastel, paint, or charcoal.

As with years past, the work defines its own slice of time as it captures an essence of an era. This year we are seeing more of a mix of traditional and contemporary media, thus firming the notion of digital tools becoming more a part of contemporary art practice. Whether this is evidenced by specific media, such as pencil in digital works, or by nods to older technologies, such as simulations of two-dimensional animation or scratchy film and audio, the works in this show

represent Lev Manovich’s notion of Deep Remixability. They are indeed representative of the mixing of previously unrelated media, such as traditional and digital art forms, and show how digital environments created by software has facilitated deep remixing to form unique artistic and conceptual ideas.

We continue tradition by presenting the SpaceTime exhibition in Second Life. The exhibition is made possible this year by Bowling Green State University and is located on their island. This is an opportunity to extend the art beyond the confines of the conference and furthers the continuum of art venues and functions.

The SpaceTime exhibition encompasses print, animation, and interactive works. The pieces include commercial and artistic interpretations of digital arts and computer graphics. The print section includes design posters that interpret “Network Your Senses,” the conference theme, and fine art that is an expression of the artist’s vision. The animation division includes creative examples of animation ranging from industrial works

such as character animation and visual effects to the conceptual such as fine arts and traditional abstract works. The interactive division showcases computer-based interactive works that engage the participant in novel ways and includes web based, desktop, and interactive installation works.

Together, the three divisions within the SpaceTime

exhibition capture a moment in time

that embodies the richness of creative expression within the space created by computer graphics software,

thus forming new relationships and

associations that continue the arts.

From prehistoric times until today, culture has changed art and art has changed culture. This year students from the US, China, Japan, France and Taiwan demonstrated that interactivity is a new form of art. They’ve created

pieces that expressed their concerns with contemporary issues such as education and the environment. They’ve combined images, sound and interaction to provide novel experiences —stimulating minds and emotions in ways that static art can’t.

Arts Department, Rutgers Camden, NJ

During the past year, creative students from schools around the world have diligently worked to get their submissions finished and prepared for the 2009 SpaceTime Student Animation Competition. Included were a total of 67 entries from 21 schools in 7 countries. Some of the submissions were narrative with characters, while others were experimental and focused more on concepts and installation. Still others tended to be suited for industry, but were balanced by ones that were more whimsical. For the first time, we chose an animation installation as first place winner in conceptual animation categories. The first round of judging narrowed the entries down to 19, which represents 28% of the total entries received. Of these 19 entries, the top 6 were selected as first, second, and third prizes for the two main categories, Industry and Conceptual.

SpaceTime Student Print Competition SpaceTime Print Curator Shayra Kumar

Like prior years, this student print competition included entries in all the three categories (Print, Poster design by college students, and K-12 works). While the print and K-12 categories were open to themes, the entries in poster design competition address the theme “Network your Senses” (the theme of the conference this year). A panel of jurors, consisting of seven international artists/designers, faced the tough task of selecting works in each of the three categories. The aim was to select works that were great examples of creativity and ingenuity that pushed the boundaries of the digital medium. While many works selected for the exhibition are digital prints, there are many which employed traditional methods (including drawing, painting, printmaking, and photography) in combination with digital tools to create experimental and hybrid works. Keeping in mind that submitted works were produced by students in various disciplines and at different career points, we particularly focused on artists who did not hesitate to go beyond the constraints laid down by class projects or exercises. From the highly competitive pool of works submitted, the jury recommended awards to those works that were both innovative and exploratory, and showcased a high level of clarity in the idea and its expression. ■
