extra-curricular music opportunities have continued to engage and inspire hundreds
of Arden students. There are over fourteen ensembles during a school week, including
Senior Choir, B.A.T.S., Ardenaires, Lower School Band, String Orchestra, Chamber Choir,
Guitar Group and Brass Band.
At the beginning of the last academic year, four very talented young men in Year 11 formed
a superb Barbershop quartet named ‘Four on the Floor’. After a stunning debut in the Upper
School Christmas Concert they’ve taken audiences by storm around the Midlands; from
radio appearances to national barbershop competitions. The Ardenaires big band and
B.A.T.S. choir also continue to be in great demand, playing at numerous events.
The Upper School Spring Concert took place at the fantastic Bushell Hall, Solihull School
with an incredible range of music on offer, including all of our Upper school ensembles.
The concert got off to a great start with a lively performance of ‘I am the Doctor’ by the
String Orchestra, arranged and conducted by Miss Gosling. The Chamber Choir continued
with their breathtaking performance of Whitacre’s ‘Seal Lullaby’. The solo and small
ensembles were also astonishing, including a performance of the ‘Trout Quintet’ and a lively
Little Shop of Horrors reunion. The Senior Windband closed the concert with a substantial
and extremely demanding set, including a stunning performance of ‘Selections from
Wicked’. This concert provided a wonderful way to say goodbye and thank you to those
musicians leaving us at the end of Years 11 and 13.
As part of the World War One commemoration Year 10 singers and musicians arranged
and performed a medley of Wartime favourites including ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary’, ‘Daisy
Bell’ and ‘Pack up your Troubles in your old Kit Bag’.
The academic year was once again brought to an end by the traditional House Music
competition involving a huge range of musicians, singers and dancers competing. The most
striking feature of this musical spectacular is the warmth, encouragement and support
shown to all the performers by over five hundred of their peers.

Production 2014 ‘The little Shop of horrors’
Last year the Arden Academy production was Little Shop of Horrors. With 186 pupils
participating both on and off stage it really was an exciting experience for all involved. It is
true to say we have an abundance of talent here at Arden and choosing amongst our
excellent students to cast the lead roles gets harder every year.
The man-eating plant from outer space certainly gave the characters the run around, growing
from a small hand puppet to a two-student operated beast that devoured most of the lead actors.
There were outstanding performances from all those involved. Megan Evans provided the
silky tones of the plant, Dannielle Rose literally stunned the audience with her exceptional
vocal delivery, whilst Morgan Scriven’s outlandish performance as the psychotic dentist
certainly captured his depraved tendencies as he loomed over a quivering Harvey Grant
waving a rusty drill in his hand. Charles Toogood joined the cast three months into the
rehearsal period as Seymour, the unlikely hero, not that anyone would have realised.
In addition to a huge backstage and sound and lighting crew, hair and make-up artists,
costume and prop designers, the musical was once again accompanied by an all-star student
band who, having rehearsed since early October, contributed greatly to the overall professional
ethos of this years production. And next year? FAME!
Spotlights 2014
This year also saw the first Arden ‘Spotlights’ where pupils were honoured and recognised
for their contribution to the Performing Arts Department. Amongst the many awards there
were prizes for Best Actor, Dedication to Drama, Best Ensemble Performance, Best Solo Vocals,
Musician of the Year, and Contribution to Music.
It was such an amazing evening with pupils and teachers dressed for the red carpet occasion.
It was a fantastic evening providing an opportunity to celebrate the talent and commitment
of our pupils.

Sport plays an integral role in school life and personal development for many
arden students. The numerous opportunities to participate enable students to
gain a lifelong passion for participation in exercise and sport, as well as important
skills like teamwork, commitment, leadership and discipline. Whether a student’s goal is
elite performance, team spirit or simply the pure enjoyment of participation, Arden’s rich
range of curricular and extra-curricular sports ensures all our students can get involved,
find their niche and fulfill their potential.
Arden’s philosophy is based upon participation, where all children are welcome to attend
extra-curricular clubs that develop and improve their individual skills and provide the
added health and social benefits of physical activity. There are also regular ‘friendly fixtures’
and coaching games against children from other schools. By fielding two or three teams
when opportunities arise, we ensure every child has the chance to take part. Successes
at county, regional and national level have also been achieved by many Arden individuals
and teams; a testament to our students’ sporting talent, dedication and devotion.
In the past year a number of new sporting opportunities have arisen, including Rowing,
Golf and Lacrosse. Another exciting development has been that of Sport Leaders and
Sport Ambassadors. These are usually older students who want to help run sports clubs,
teams and primary school sport where they can pass on their passion and experience
to younger students. These Leaders and Ambassadors enable many more clubs and
