Blake Basmajian, ranked first at Corinth High School, is described by nominator Lynne Jenkins a positive role model.

His most impressive leadership role came this past fall when, as the varsity quarterback and team captain on the football team, Blake was forced to sit on the sidelines after he suffered a fractured skull during a summer job. He overcame adversity by acting as an assistant coach to his fellow teammates and not only worked with the coaching staff during prac-tice but taught the new sophomore quarter-back the skills he had learned.

Blake is the class president, president of the student body and student representative on the Corinth Board of Education. He is a peer leader in WAVE that trains high school students to mentor kids in the middle schools to develop strategies against bullying.

In the community, Blake raised $500 by orga-nizing a basketball tournament as his commu-nity service project for the National Honor Society. The money went to the Back Pack program, which helps feed needy students over the weekends during the school year.

In addition, Blake has participated in basket-ball and baseball, Drama club, National Sci-ence and Foreign Language Honor Societies, Select Chorus and Boy Scouts. He has been a Boys State representative and Varsity Club vice president.

Marc Billow, a senior at Granville High School, was nominated by Susan Hosley and Terry Wheeler for a Teen Excellence award. Hosley called him a “visionary” in the field of technology.

Last year Marc, the senior member of the VEX robotics team, led his classmates through state and regional contests and on to the World Competition in California.

“He is able to analyze a task or situation, develop a plan – which may include recruit-ing others – and then successfully execute the plan,” Hosley said. “He has a strong work ethic, a high level of commitment and through his enthusiasm encourages others to work with him.”

Marc is involved in all technological capaci-ties at the school, from live broadcasts of graduation ceremonies over the Internet to the lighting, sound and screen production of the Future Farmers of America’s Battle of the Bands. He designed the website for the school’s website and the t-shirt logos for dif-ferent activities.

Marc worked at a local factory last summer learning CAD, milling and welding. This complemented course work he has completed through Project Lead the Way, which has led to his receiving college credit through RIT and Syracuse University.

Marc filmed and made DVDs for a commu-nity dedication of a World War II memorial clock, volunteers at the Slate Valley Museum, was voted Most Outstanding Student in 2012 and attended Boys’ State. Daniel Truso was nominated by Granville business teacher Terry Wheeler and friend Raymond Bergeron. Daniel has demonstrated his commitment at Granville High School in several areas but especially in the Future Farmers of America. He has been an FFA student advisor and chapter vice president. He is currently a New York State FFA Sentinel and member of the governing board. He has driven almost 20,000 miles around the state visiting other FFA chapters and helping younger students set career goals.

Dan is active with Rotary Club and the Gran-ville Community Agricultural Exposition – serving as advertising and fundraising chairs, and has attended a number of conferences and conventions.

He volunteers at his church and the Hayne’s House of Hope. He plays varsity tennis and is a member of the junior National Honor Society, National Honor Society and quiz bowl team.

Dan works with his parents in a wholesale maple operation that earned about $60,000 last year. He ran a retail sale through school that helped raise $3,000 for the FFA chapter. He is currently working on a business plan to bring in $1 million over the next 10 years while attending the University of Vermont. He received a student award from Albany Business Review last year.

“Without Dan’s impeccable leadership and time-management skills, he could never have helped so many and still graduated on time with honors,” said Wheeler.
