ABSTRACT

On March 31, 2020, just in the period when the health system in Lombardy was dramatically manifesting its vulnerability in face of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Polytechnic and the Polyclinic of Milan jointly launched the MEV open project. MEV stands for “Multiple Emergency Ventilator” and represents a complete review of emergency support to respiratory ventilation: a device for multiple recipients, intrinsically safe, customized for each patient.MakingMEV is the first practical implementation of the MEV project. While in the first phase all efforts were concentrated on designing the components and validating the operating principle, the new project intends to create a fully functional prototype of the ventilator, to validate its functionality in the laboratory and to analyze its realistic potential for transfer to the clinical sector.

Alberto Zanella, anesthetist and resuscitator at the IRCCS Ca 'Granda Foundation - Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico (Milan) and researcher at the Department of Medical-Surgical Physiopathology and Transplantation, University of Milan.
