LA 2111L Claire Latane Jasmin Cielo The new Heart of Los Angeles Youth building is becoming an empowering platform for students coming from disadvantaged communities. Their experience begins in the central building, where teachers, alumni, and volunteers plant a seed in them that whispers a calling to seek knowledge in pursuit of the truth. The center is a magic zone where the students are being challenged with new skills and ideas. They become an intentional work in progress starting at an early age. As they reach the end of the day, preparing to depart from the HOLA experience, they begin their journey with moving outward to return to their neighborhoods, homes, and reality. They carry the seed of knowledge, which is then nourished as they walk through the bounded pathways. The momentum they carry from the Hola experience is sustained while they travel through the low understory and beneath the comforting tree canopies. Their encounter with the grass mounds, sustainable materials, and other natural elements help unravel their inner potential to explore how they will contribute to this world. At the end of their passage, they would feel proud to have nurtured the seed well, feeling empowered to continue moving forward and passing the seed onto others. Public access to wholesome foods Allow visitors to connect with natural elements by having them play and interact with the topography. Circulation Diagram A korean garden with a variety of colored flowers and bordered with wood will encourage users to explore walkways. Tall palm trees provide shade and comforting space for people to sit and rest. Design Goals: 1. Have audience feel connected in this space by including diverse plants, varying in texture and color in order to attract more users from different ethnicities. Include sustainability by having seating areas be made out of safe recycled material; incorporate light colored walkways and more trees to mitigate heat. The varying colors and texture can draw in curious wanderers, making the area feel more welcoming and safe. 2. Provide a safe place for the children and adult visitors by adding plenty of seating areas to invite people to stay, not just walk through, which can then attract others to explore inside. The combination of tree canopies and low understory gives a glimpse of what lies in the space, which can also draw in curious wanderers. 3. Lead visitors with clear guidance by arranging plants in a coherent manner. The programming spaces will also be clear to users. Give alternative walkways so they can feel to move around.
