An excerpt from Shadows, Darkness, and Dawn by Thomas Steagald
On the horizontal dial face of Roman-occupied Palestine, circa 30 ce, a cruciform gnomon* appears, fixed as if from the foundations of the world and aimed at the true north of God’s mercy: a man, arms outstretched in suffering embrace, his face to the sun and glistening, immovable in his filial resolve. But shadows form on the dial, radii from the man to the very edges of the earth; they deepen with each day’s passing. Shadows and darkness tell the perennial time: night is coming.
“The light is with you for a little longer,” he says to his friends. “Walk while you have the light, lest the darkness overtake you” (RSV). But the darkness does overtake them, and it overtakes us too.
“The ones who walk in darkness do not know where they are going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become children of the light.”
Do not stay in the darkness, in other words. Come out of the shadows and into the light. The darkness deepens, but dawn is sure. Which is to say, the shadows tell the times of Lent, but in their own sad way also the hope of Easter’s dawn.

Johnny Sears, Director of the Academy for Spiritual Formation
During Lent, we are called into a forty-day season of prayer and fasting. These practices reconnect us to our deepest longings and spiritual hunger so that we are more prepared to receive the
transforming presence of the risen Christ on Easter. When we observe Lent, we remember and journey with Moses, Elijah, and Jesus, who each spent forty days in prayer and fasting while being sustained by God and prepared for their own transformation. This forty-day pattern reminds us that transformation doesn’t happen in the abstract but requires physical time and space.
The Two-Year Academy for Spiritual Formation is another forty-day journey that provides the time and space for encountering God’s transforming presence. Participants spend forty days in residence (five days every three months) as part of a spiritual community that practices a rhythm of prayer, worship, instruction, silence, and rest. Through this process, they deepen their relationship with Christ and strengthen more outward aspects of spiritual leadership.
Five years ago, I was wrestling with my own deep spiritual longing. I had a young family and a demanding job and felt helpless to nurture any sort of prayer life in the midst of the chaos and busyness. That’s when I entered the two-year Academy for Spiritual Formation. By the end of the Academy, the day-to-day trappings of my life weren’t much different—the chaos and busyness were still there. However, I now entered into work, ministry, prayer, and family life with less anxiety and more joy because my focus and center had been shifted. That gift of time and space has made all the difference for new life.
As you journey through this season of Lent, consider your deepest longings and whether the Academy for Spiritual Formation might be a gift you want to give to yourself and to God. Who knows, you may just rediscover the promised newness of life that waits at the end of Lent.

DR485 • 978-0-88177-485-6 • $14.00
Traditional views of evangelism often push the limits of personal comfort, so the task of reaching out to unchurched persons is left up to clergy. Knight and Powe show how this
misunderstanding is contrary to John Wesley’s view of evangelism, which he understood as a complete circle. Evangelism need not be feared but seen as a way for one friend in Christ to welcome another friend in Christ to the faith.
