Allow Me to Introduce Myself!

Getting to know the people behind the branch

Hello everyone!

My name is Paula Middleton and I have been working as the new Deputy

Adoption Centre Manager since March 2016. I come from an RAF family so

don’t really have a hometown as we moved a lot, but have lived up and

down England so the accent can be hard to place at times!

I’m a lover of all animals (not just cats) which started at an early age and

due to very understanding parents, I have owned a plethora of pets

including; cats, dogs, a horse, gerbils, hamsters, rats, stick insects, rabbits

and fish. When I was just six I managed a successful My Little Pony stable

yard in my bedroom and used to walk our diabetic cat, Mr Mork and things

have progressed from there really.

When I was 15, my childhood best friend and retired drug detection dog,

Sam, developed Cognitive Dysfunction (dog dementia). The changes that

occurred in his brain inspired me to research his new behaviours and things

I could do to help him cope with his new state of being. When we said

goodbye to Sam the following year, I decided that I wanted to become a

‘Doctor Dolittle’ of sorts and set about becoming a qualified animal

behaviourist in order to help improve the mental health and quality of life

for other animals too.

I got my undergraduate degree at Harper Adams University in BSc (Hons)

Animal Behaviour & Welfare in 2011 which gave me the chance to find my

feet in the world of farming. Discovering that companion animals were

more for me, I then went on to study a Masters degree at the University of

Lincoln in MSc Clinical Animal Behaviour in 2012.

I have had an interesting career so far and have never been afraid to try

new things, including working as; an Organic Lavender Producer, Bee

Keeper, Wedding Organiser, Cattery Supervisor for the RSPCA, ran my own

Animal Behaviour Clinic and most recently; Behaviourist and Centre Trainer

for Jerry Green Dog Rescue.

My house has never not been full of pets and thanks to my incredible

partner David, we currently share our home with two gorgeous rescue

dogs; Teddy and Waffles.

I’m still working on being allowed a cat in our new home!

Top: Paula and Stripey, one of Chelmsford CP's current

residents.

Middle: Diabetic boy and walking partner, Mr Mork.

Bottom: The lovely Sam, at the grand age of 16.

Left: Paula's current babies; Teddy and Waffles, aged three

and four respectively.

Honey's Update:

News from the Adoption Centre

Ssshhh! Oh, my a-paw-logies, I was just having a flick through a few of these lovely books and forgot that I was

at the Adoption Centre and not Galleywood Library!

You might be wondering how someone as busy as me could find the time to sit down and read, well the truth is I

was just sorting some donated items.

My staff and I are always so grateful when our supporters kindly think of us and pass on their preloved goods,

but whilst undertaking my stock check, I have noted that we have an abundance of great titles but that sales of

books have gradually declined.

I'm sure you can appreciate how sad this makes me, as there's nothing more relaxing than sitting down to read a

good book (in between editions of my newsletter, of course) with a cat curled up next to you for company. I'd

therefore ask you to make a bee-line (perhaps that should be a Honeybee-line!) to our book stall at the next

Chelmsford CP event you attend, as I will have sorted the finest selection of books for you to choose from.

Please do bear in mind though, that if you leave your newly purchased book unattended, you may return to find

your cat curled up on your book. This is just our polite way of reminding you that you must not lavish attention

on other things for too long!

Well, I can't sit around chatting, so I'll give you an update on a couple of our current residents looking for their

forever homes, before handing over to my assistant Mark Brown, to whom I have delegated the task of

preparing an update of the Centre, with accompanying photos, for my approval. I find using the camera very

tricky.

Honey xx

Meet 11 year old Tuffy. He looks a little sad

in this photo as he found himself with us

following the death of his owner. He had

also suffered with in growing eyelashes

(similar to Thomas O'Malley) but he has

recently undergone a procedure to correct

this.

Tuffy is a lovely boy who enjoys being in the

presence of people, but doesn't care for too

much fuss. He would prefer a quieter

household, perhaps living with an older

couple or someone who lives on their own.

This beautiful long haired moggie could easily

be mistaken for a lion, with his fluffy ginger

mane!

This is Stripey, who you may recognise from the

selfie with Deputy Manager Paula on page 3!

Stripey's story is similar to Tuffy's; she lived with

an elderly owner who had to move to a care

home.

Like Tuffy, Stripey is also independent and likes

to have fuss on her terms, (a cat after my own

heart!) but this wouldn't make rehoming her any

less rewarding. All cats have something unique

to bring to a home (in Stripey's case, it may be a

mouse as well as her independence!) and our

work at CP is all about treating each cat with an

understanding of its individual needs.

Over to Mark, on recent developments at the Centre...

"Lately, the volunteer gardeners have done some really amazing work in clearing the land near the kitten

sheds. All the brambles, nettles and miscellaneous weeds are being cleared away. The plan is to fill the

cleared areas with perennial plants and spring bulbs and to create a pathway so visitors can walk through.

In addition, we will be tidying up the area around the cats' graves and cleaning and refurbishing the

memorials.

As we progress, photos will be uploaded onto our Facebook page, but if you are passing, why not call in

and have a look at the work yourselves?"

...To Sponsor Pat! An update from our very own athlete!

After almost four months of training three to four times a week, putting on the trainers and the woolly hat and

running around my local town in the wind and rain of an English winter, the day itself had finally come!

I decided to book into a hotel in Canary Wharf the night before, giving me (hopefully) a good night's sleep and just

a short trip on the tube to Greenwich Park and the start line!

The good night's sleep didn't really happen due to a combination of my excitement and slight nerves and my

brothers snoring!

The sheer scale of the event is out of this world; with approximately 35,000 people in the race, it took almost 25

minutes for me to actually get to the start line, amongst a swarm of people shuffling along at a snail's pace.

Keeping warm wasn't a problem, it was an ideal day for running, not too hot or too cold!

My training hours had served me well, I really enjoyed the first 14 or so miles, passing such sites as the Cutty Sark

and Tower Bridge the fantastic atmosphere created by the crowd willed me on throughout!

The crowd would shout things like "go Cats Protection!" or "go cats c'mon!" It was an amazing experience, the

crowd and the sites you pass along with the variety of people taking part, from youngsters right through to elderly

athletes!! Not to mention those in fancy dress and the people wanting an extra challenge such as running with a

washing machine attached to their back or the four chaps carrying a boat above their heads all the way round!

Approximately 20 miles in and I was feeling the effects of running for about four hours or so without stopping!

The crowd really helped in those last 6 miles or so with their cheers of encouragement! As I headed up the

embankment towards Big Ben I spotted a swarm of bright yellow, which could only mean one thing; the Cats

Protection support team with their flags and banners! After stopping for a hug from them all and a photo I carried

on my way. It was tough, but after turning into the Mall there it was - the finishing line!! I crossed the line after

five hours and six minutes of running, waving and high fiving small kids en route around London!

It was a fantastic feeling made even better by the fact that I didn't have any blisters at all! I felt so proud of what I

had just achieved, not only for myself but for all the money I had raised for such a great cause in Cats Protection!

I would like to thank all the hardworking and kind people that assisted, sponsored, supported and encouraged me,

without whom none of this would have been possible. I'd also like to thank my wife for putting up with the hours

spent training and for helping to pick me up after a bad run! She even had banners waiting for me on my return

home that evening.

Thank you all of you,

Pat Mackshea

All the Fun of the Fair! Events Organiser Mark Brown reviews our Family Fun Day

On Saturday 13th August, the annual

Fun Day was held at the Chelmsford

Adoption Centre in Deadmans Lane.

The sun was shining and all the

volunteers, stall holders and staff

were ready for our visitors to arrive.

And arrive you did, over 650 people

attended, which was a huge increase

from the previous year, so a big thank

you from all at the Centre.

We had in excess of 35 stalls and

attractions and along with our regular

favourites, a number of new ones: a

traditional ice cream cart, Indian

cuisine, a line dancing display, a

petting farm and the police.

The petting farm and police proved to

be very popular with everyone; the

chance to hold a duckling and chick,

see ferrets, goats and ducks to name a

few. And what child (or even adult!)

wouldn't love the chance to sit in the

driving seat of a police car (that's one

on my bucket list anyway).

Page 9: AW16 newsletter CURRENT - Cats Protection · I got my undergraduate degree at Harper Adams University in BSc (Hons) Animal Behaviour & Welfare in 2011 which gave me the chance to

Chelmsford Cats Protection | 9

As I walked round, I was amazed at

how many people were visiting the

kitten pens and the cats in the main

building and although we didn't home

a huge number, 'every little helps'.

Star of the show was Thomas

O'Malley, who, with his case packed,

toys and favourite blanket at the

ready, was ready to move out and go

to his new home. Good luck Thomas,

you will be missed by all of us. Don't

despair though, Thomas's home

already has a new resident, you may

have heard him on the day, yes Bob

now lives there.

We also had enquiries from a number

of people who wanted to volunteer

and sitting at the front desk was an

ideal opportunity for me to talk them

through what being a volunteer

means to me.

Once again a huge thank you and I am

already working on the Fun Day for

2017, so watch this space!

The Long Road to Recovery

Deputy Manager Gill Charrington concludes with part two...

In the last newsletter you met some of our

long stay cats that have needed ongoing

treatment.

Now meet Maverick:

Maverick came to us from a vets way back in

September 2015. He was taken in as a stray

with an abscess above his left eye and he

was dehydrated. When he was admitted he

was scared and shaking, he hid away and

didn’t want to eat. If you could coax him

out from his hiding place he would gradually

enjoy a fuss and purr.

Maverick saw our vet, the abscess was

healing well and we made arrangements to

get him blood tested for FIV and FELV and

castrated, hoping he could then go up for

homing.

Unfortunately by the end of November

another abscess had formed and burst. He

had a large lump that had come up in the

middle of his forehead. This was hard like a

piece of bone, but over a few days it

changed to a deep indentation. The vets

cleaned the puss and infection and x-rayed

the area, thinking he may have a fractured

skull but there was no evidence of this on

the x-rays.

Then at the beginning of January this year

Maverick needed a skin graft. The photos

show him with the staples holding the graft

in place.

The time between then and now has been

continuous topical medications to help the

area heal. He had months of wearing a

buster collar, which he tolerated really well.

It was a great day when the collar came off

and Sue, one of our lovely ladies decided

she had to take him home.

He left here in May and is now living the life

of luxury. Thank you Sue.

Page 13: AW16 newsletter CURRENT - Cats Protection · I got my undergraduate degree at Harper Adams University in BSc (Hons) Animal Behaviour & Welfare in 2011 which gave me the chance to

Chelmsford Cats Protection | 13

Sue says:

"I first met Maverick in October last year. I volunteer at Chelmsford Cats Protection as often as I can

after work on a Friday afternoon, one day I was asked to go and spend some time with one of the cats

in isolation. I was told that he had a very bad head wound but I must admit that I was very taken

aback by the sheer severity of the wound. Despite this he came straight over and plonked himself on

my lap, where he sat for the next half hour. He had to wear the plastic collar but nothing seemed to

bother him, he was just the most friendly little cat that I had ever met despite everything he was

having to cope with. I never imagined that seven months later he would be coming home with me!

On April 8th this year I had to say goodbye to Alfie, a cat that I had adopted from the shelter almost 10

years ago. To say I was upset is an understatement, heartbroken in fact as he was my soulmate and

my best friend. He had always been ‘delicate’ and suffered from bouts of illness but he did not recover

from an onset of pancreatitis. He died in my arms. I vowed that day I would never get another cat as I

could not go through that again!!

Well – my vow didn’t last long! After a few weeks people started asking me if I was going to get

another rescue cat, I kept saying no!! Then my husband started talking about it, he said we would

never replace Alfie but we had room in our home (and hearts) to give a home to one of the cats at the

shelter. When I mentioned it to the staff that we were thinking of getting another one they all said

“Take Maverick!” As he had been at the shelter for so long they had all become very attached to him

and wanted him to go with someone who would be able to give them regular updates on how he was

getting on. A week later Dave, my husband, came to meet him and the minute he set eyes on him he

was smitten! So the decision was made.

On May 21st Maverick came to live with us in Boreham. He still had the collar on and had to have

weekly visits to the vet to check his head. After five weeks he was given the all clear and despite still

having a bald head his wound has completely healed. The bald spot is getting smaller but it doesn’t

matter if the hair never grows back – to us he is just gorgeous. He settled in almost straight away with

our two other cats and he has especially become attached to Tom; our other tabby and follows him

everywhere – not sure how Tom feels about that!

We feel so lucky to have Maverick as part of our family. He even sleeps on the bed with us now. We

think he is still quite young as he is very playful, we just love watching him playing in the garden,

jumping about trying to catch moths! He has a home for life with us. Thanks Cats Protection for all

you did for him x"

Home Sweet Home

Catch up with ex-residents as they settle into their forever homes

Hi there,

We just wanted to write and let you know how Midget (pictured

right) is settling in.

Last Sunday when we brought her home she stayed mostly in her

room, she ventured out a little but stayed close to her space.

During the week she's gotten more and more comfortable,

yesterday she started playing with her toys and this morning even

ventured on the bed for morning cuddles. With each day her

confidence is growing and she's trusting us a little more.

Midget is an absolute treasure and we are loving watching her

develop into her new space.

Jo and Steve

Hi all at Chelmsford Cats Protection,

We thought you would like an update on Hattie (pictured left) since

she came to live with us at the end of June.

What a cat, she told us right from the start that she was in charge

and quickly taught us to endlessly throw mice and tinkly balls up and

down the stairs. She appointed herself a large play area where she

likes to run madly around constantly talking and making cat noises.

She loves her food and sitting on laps which she organises her

humans to carry out on a daily basis.

There has been only one small hiccup which involved a curtain rail

coming down when she was exercising but she did point out that it

was not attached to the wall securely! Best of all she is so

affectionate, a lovely cat.

Thank you and best wishes

June and Peter

We love to receive updates from

previous Adoption Centre residents -

why not write in and let us know how

your cat is doing - perhaps you would

like their story to be featured in a

future edition of the newsletter?

Please note, letters may be edited for

clarity and length.

Hi there! This is me, Tigger, being vigilant and checking

for intruders in the back garden from the comfort of the

lounge.

I have been in my forever home just over a year now

and have settled in nicely. I have not one, but two

scratch posts, toys to play with and several seats with

cosy throws on, plus sunny window sills to stretch out

on and I make full use of the facilities.

On the food side, I used to eat my meal, continue to sit

there and look up pitifully at my mistress and she would

give me extra food. This worked until the vet came

along and said tho' I am a big cat, at 6.5kg I was

overweight.

The extra rations stopped; I have tried softening her up

with a field mouse or two, but I cannot say that my little

presents have been greeted with any enthusiasm.

It's now time for another little nap, must keep up my

strength you know...bye for now.

(Dictated by Tigger to his mistress/secretary Janice).

Last but certainly not least, the update you've all

been waiting for, Thomas O'Malley! New owner

Jemma writes:

"Thomas O'Malley has settled in very well. He

absolutely loves a lap or if not a lap he beats me to

my favourite chair! He knows his comfy spots! He

watches from the windowsill at everything going

by. I am thinking of writing a book or a blog about

him as he's such a character so stay tuned. I truly

feel like he waited for me in the cattery and I now

can't imagine my home without him xx"
