Installation and Connections
System Installation
Afterunpackingtheunit, and placingit ona solidsurfacecapableof supportingitsweight, youwillneedto maketheconnectionsto youraudioandvideoequipment.
Audio Equipment ConnectionsWerecommendthat you usehigh-qualityinter-connectcableswhenmakingconnectionstosourceequipmentand recordersto preservetheintegrityof the signals.
Whenmakingconnectionsto audio sourceequipmentor speakersit is alwaysa good prac-tice to unplug the unit fromthe ACwall outlet.Thispreventsanypossibilityof accidentallysendingaudio or transientsignalsto the speak-ers that maydamagethem.
1. Connectthe analogoutput of a CDplayertothe CD inputsQ.
NOTE:When the CDplayerhasboth fixedandvariableaudio outputsit is best to use thefixed
output unlessyou find that the inputto thereceiveris so low that the sound is noisy,or so
high that the signal is distorted.
2. Connectthe analogPlay/Outjacks of a cas-sette deck,MD,CD-Ror otheraudio recorderto
the Tape Input jacks I_t. Connectthe analogRecord/Injacks on the recorderto the TapeOutput jacks O on the AVR110.
3. Connectthe output of anydigital sourcesto the appropriateinput connectionson theAVR110 rear panel. Note that the Optical
and Coaxial Digital Inputs _i_li'_ maybe usedwith a DolbyDigital or DTSsourceorthe output of a conventionalCDor LDplayer'sPCM (S/P-DIF)output.
4. ConnecttheCoaxial or Optical DigitalOutputsI_ on the rearpaneloftheAVR110tothematchingdigital inputconnectionsona CD-Ror MiniDiscrecoldel.
5. AssembletheAM LoopAntennasuppliedwith the unit asshownbelow.Connectit to the
AM and 6ND screwterminalsO.
6. Connectthe suppliedFMantennato the FM
(75 ohm)connectionO. TheFM antennamaybe anexternalroof antenna,an insidepoweredor wire leadantennaor a connectionfrom a
cableTVsystem.Notethat if the antennaorconnectionuses300-ohmtwindeadcable,youmust usethe 300-ohm-to-75-ohmadaptersup-pliedwith the unit to makethe connection.
7. Connectthe front, centerand surround
speakeroutputs_)_)_ to the respective
speakers.
Toensurethat all the audiosignalsare carriedto your speakerswithout lossof clarityor reso-lution, we suggestthat youusehigh-qualityspeakercable.Manybrandsof cableareavail-ableand the choiceof cablemaybe influencedby the distancebetweenyour speakersand thereceive_,the typeof speakersyouuse, personalpreferencesand otherfactors.Yourdealerorinstalleris a valuableresourceto consultin
selectingthe propercable.
Regardlessof the brandof cableselected,werecommendthat youusea cableconstructedoffine,multistlandcopperwith a gaugeof 14 orsmaller.Rememberthat in specifyingcable,thelower the AWGnumber,thethickerthe cable.
Cablewith a gaugeof 16 maybeusedfor shortrunsof lessthan ten feet.Wedo not recom-
mendthat youusecableswith anAWGequiva-lent of 18or higherdueto the power lossanddegradationin performancethat wilt occur.
Cablesthat are run insidewalls shouldhavethe
appropriatemarkingsto indicatelistingwith ULCSAor otherappropriatetestingagencystan-dards.Questionsabout runningcablesinsidewalls shouldbe referredto your installeror alicensedelectricalcontractorwho is familiar
with the NECand/orthe applicablelocalbuild-ing codesinyour area.
Whenconnectingwiresto the speakers,becer-tain to observeproperpolarity.Remembertoconnectthe "negative" or "black" wire to thesameterminalon both the receiverandthe
speaker.Similarly, the "positive" or "red" wireshouldbeconnectedto like terminalson the
AVR110 andspeakec
NOTE:While mostspeakermanufacturers
adhereto an industryconventionof usingblackterminalsfor negativeand red onesfor positive, somemanufacturersmayvaryfromthis config-uration.Toassureproperphaseandoptimal
performance, consultthe identificationplateonyour speakeror the speaker'smanualto verifypolarity. If youdo not know the polarity of yourspeaker, askyour dealerfor advicebeforepro-ceeding,or consultthe speaker'smanufaeturec
We also recommendthat the length of cableusedto connectspeakerpairsbe identical.Forexample, usethe samelength pieceofcableto connect the frontdeft and front-rightor surrounddeft and surround-right speakers, even if the speakersare a different distancefrom the AVR110.

by manycomputerprogramsfor recordingcom-pressedaudiofiles.Whenan MP3bitstreamispresent,the soundwilt automaticallybeplayedin the stereo(surroundoff} mode.Thesurroundmodesare not availableduring MP3playback.
In addition to the bitstreamindicators,the
AVR110 featuresa set of uniquechannel-input
indicatorsthat tell you how manychannelsofdigital informationare beingreceivedand/orwhetherthe digital signal is interrupted.
Theseindicatorsare the L/C/R/LS/RS/LFElettersthat are insidethecenter boxesof the
Speaker/Channel Input Indicators [] in
the front panelMain Information Display[]. Whena standardanalogsignal is in use, only the "L" and "R" indicatorswill light, asanalogsignalshaveonly left and right chan-nels,respectively.
Digitalsignals, howevel, mayhavetwo, five orsix separatechannels, dependingon the pro-grammaterial,the method of transmissionandthe way in which it wasencoded.Whena digi-tal signal is playing, the letters in theseindica-tors will light in responseto the specificsignalbeing received. It is importantto notethatalthough DolbyDigital, for example,is referredto as a "5.1" system, not all DolbyDigital DVDs
or programsare encodedfor 5.1.Thus,it issometimesnormalfor a DVDwith a Dotby
Digitalsoundtrackto trigger only the "L" and"R" indicators.
NOTE:ManyDVDdiscsare recordedwith both"5.1" and "2.0" versionsof the samesound-
track.Whenplayinga DVD,alwaysbecertaintocheckthe typeof materialon the disc.Mostdiscsshow this informationin the form of a
listing or icon on the backof the discjacket.Whena discdoesoffermultiple soundtrack
choicesyou mayhaveto makesomeadjust-mentsto your DVDplayer(usuallywith the"AudioSelect"button or in a menuscreenon the disc)to senda full 5.1 feedto the
AVR110. It is also possiblefor the typeof sig-nal feed to changeduringthe courseof a DVDplayback. In somecasesthe previewsof specialmaterialwill only be recordedin 2.0 audio, while the mainfeature is availablein 5.1 audio.
As long asyour DVDplayeris set for 6-channeloutput, theAVR110 will automaticallysense
changesto the bitstreamand channelcountand reflectthem in theseindicators.
Theletters usedbythe Speaker/ChannelInput Indicators [] alsoflash to indicatewhen a bitstreamhasbeeninterrupted. This
will happenwhena digital inputsourceisselectedbeforethe playbackstarts,or whenadigital sourcesuchasa DVDis paused. The
flashingindicatorsremindyou that the play-backhasstoppeddueto the absenceof a
digital signalandnot through anyfault of theAVR110. Thisis normal, and the digital play-backwill resumeoncethe playbackis startedagain.
Night ModeA specialfeatureof DotbyDigital is the Nightmode, which enablesAC-3input sourcesto beplayedbackwith full digital inteltigibiltywhilereducingthe minimumpeaklevelby 1/4to 1/3.Thispreventsabruptlyloud transitionsfrom dis-turbing others, without reducingthe impactofthe digital source. The Night modeis availableonly when DolbyDigitalsignalswith specialdata are being played.
