April 2019 Principals Message Parent(s) / Guardian(s), We have arrived at an important segment of the school year as we enter into April. The school year is moving along quickly. It is important that students are well aware of their academic status. We don’t want any surprises come June if students are unsuccessful in getting important credits. Please continue to monitor the parent portal. It is also important to support positive school attendance as too much missed time can result in issues regarding the Provincial attendance policy and possible lost credit. Please look for report cards on Friday, April 26th. Students in Grades 8 through 11 have registered for next year’s courses. If your child has not registered, it is important to do so immediately. Please consider all options as there will be limited or no opportunities to change classes when registration is complete. AV continues to be a busy place with students participating in many activities and clubs. Most winter sports are finished with excellent results for AV students. Well done! The School play “Witness for the Prosecution” will take place at the May 9, 10 and 11th. Be sure to get your tickets and experience an incredible performance by very talented students. If you have questions or concerns about your child at school, we want to work with you to resolve it. We encourage you to start by communicating with your child’s teacher. Please contact using email or through the main office (leave message). Make an appointment to see the teacher. Check in at the office prior to the meeting. Attend parent-student-teacher meetings at designated times. If you feel more action is needed, please contact the principal, Mr. MacPherson or vice principal for that grade level (Mr. Hanson – Grades 9 and 10, Mr. Swinamer – Grades 11 and 12). If the concern still requires attention, staff at Regional Office can help. For details, please visit https://www.avrce.ca/parentguardian-concerns The Parent Portal is a great way to monitor your daughter’s or son’s progress at school on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. It provides daily attendance, current assignments and grades, as well as, historical records (Grades, provincial assessments, course requests). For your personal log in and password, please contact the main office. Call 902-792-6740. Mr. MacPherson Principal

Library
Research has shown that
silent reading helps the brain
function more effectively and
has many benefits including
improved vocabulary, fluency
in understanding material and
also improving’ reading
abilities. It just so happens
that April is D.E.A.R... Drop Everything and Read month. This program
began several years ago as an
initiative to promote
“reading for the fun of it”
as a whole school culture.
The past couple of years we
have tried a D.E.A.R session
at Avon View, which were
very positive. I am hoping to
repeat it again later this
month. Stay Tuned!
Did you know… Beverly Cleary beloved children’s author of such books as “Ramona Quinby 8 Years Old, Ramona the Pest, The Mouse and the Motorcycle, Henry Huggins, turns 102 on April 12,
2019. Incidentally, she is a great supporter of D.E.A.R and does a great deal to promote the concept
on her website.
The Scholastic Teen Readers Flyers (Scholastic Book
Orders) are available, anyone interested in ordering please see me in the library before April 15,
2019.
***Reminders...Students have access to portable docking stations in the library for recharging your
phones and other electronic devices.
...There are still several students who have not returned their library books. Please do so
as soon as possible. Books can be placed in the “Book Drop” in the library commons/ student common
area.
