The sky’s the limit

North Carolina may be first in flight thanks to the Wright Broth-

ers in 1903, but the state hasn’t slowed down since. The aviation industry continues to grow in the state, with public

airports generating $52 billion in economic impact in 2019. These air-ports employ a whopping 307,000 people who generate $2.2 billion in local and state taxes.

These public airports transport more than 62 million travelers each year. In fact, 94% of the state’s population lives within a 30-minute drive of an airport.

There’s a lot that goes into supporting such a large industry. Ac-

cording to the 2019 State of Aviation report compiled by the Division of Aviation in the N.C. Department of Transportation, North Carolina boasts the second-fastest-growing aerospace-manufacturing sector. For this reason, along for the state’s connectivity, skilled workforce and business-friendly environment, that aerospace giants Boeing, Cessna, GE Aviation, Honda Aircraft, Lockheed Martin and Spirit AeroSystems call North Carolina home.

Aviation’s support industries

In addition to the public and private airports and the aerospace manufacturing and maintenance businesses, there is a large sup-

port industry that drives the state’s economy. This can include rental car agencies, restaurants and businesses located inside air-ports and fuel suppliers.

There are 13 rental car companies that serve the state’s 10 com-

mercial airports. The state further benefits from these companies with an 8% tax on short-term leases and rentals, which contributed $76 million in 2015, according to the Division of Aviation in the N.C. Department of Transportation.

Meanwhile, the 35 shops in Charlotte Douglas International Airport and the 22 shops in the Raleigh-Durham International Airport contrib-

uted $6 million in state tax revenues in 2015.

P erhaps one of the most exciting new areas in the aviation in-

dustry is unmanned aircraft systems or drones, and North Carolina has positioned itself to be a leader in the private and

public use of these machines. At the end of 2018, the state counted more than 26,400 recreation-

al users and 5,000 permitted commercial or government operators, according to the Division of Aviation in the N.C. Department of Trans-

portation. These numbers continue to grow as the popularity and number of uses for drones increases.

Additionally, NCDOT is among 10 teams that the U.S. Department of Transportation to participate in its UAS Integration Pilot Program over the course of three years. NCDOT has used the pilot program to test delivering medical and food packages and in hurricane response during the 2018 season.
