AVI1O Grade 9 Art ZENTANGLE worksheet: Using repeated LINES & SHAPES to create PATTERNS & TEXTURES A Zentangle is an abstract drawing created using repetitive patterns according to the trademarked Zentangle Method. True Zentangles are always created on 3.5 inch (8.9 cm) square tiles, and they are always done in black ink on white paper. The invention of the Zentangle® was intended to make the act of drawing pleasurable, meditative and accessible to all. YOUR ASSIGNMENT: In your sketchbook, lightly draw a square that is 15cm x 15 cm. Break the space of the square into 5-7 smaller areas and fill with different patterns and textures. You can start with a free flowing line or contain your patterns within a shape. This is going to be the basis of a tile relief that we sculpt using clay SO keep in mind that your are going to have to recreate the patterns using clay so you may want to keep this in mind when selecting patterns. There are some examples below to get you started and you can certainly come up with your own as well. Getting started at making your own patterns: Try more than one ZENTANGLE if you have time but, be careful, it is addictive! Other examples: Some patterns are based on shapes in nature.
