Structural design of undocumented vertical extension
4Structural design of undocumented vertical extension
East façade
No structural drawings or design information was available for review for steel shed in southeast corner of building. The latest permit drawing does not show a steel structure at roof level, although a similar structure was indicated on an earlier drawing from 2003.
South façade
Steel shed at roof level
5Structural design of undocumented vertical extension
Approx. 200-300mm deep
Portal frame rafters and stanchions appear to be shallow given the span of the frame and the building's exposure to 210kph wind loading, as per Contactor’s report.
Unstiffened connections with no haunches provided at eaves. Capacity of stanchion/rafter moment connection appears to be inadequate.
d = 200mm
b = 100mm
6Structural design of undocumented vertical extension
No vertical cross bracing provided
No vertical bracing is provided in side walls of shed to coincide with roof cross bracing.
Steel cables (ties) are connected to wall above stair core. Connection details between purlins (acting as struts) and wall unclear.
7
Non-engineered outbuildings
8Non-engineered outbuildings
Neither of the canteen sheds have an engineered stability system in the longitudinal direction; no roof or vertical bracing apparent. West canteen shed appears to have relatively shallow sections for portal frame rafter/stanchion.Lightweight roofs with overhanging sections susceptible to wind uplift.
West canteen shed East canteen shed
9Non-engineered outbuildings
Unclear connection details between purlins and support steelwork. Bolt holes provided but no bolts observed.
Inadequate holding down details susceptible to wind uplift.
Kitchen areaCanopy leading to west canteen shed
10Non-engineered outbuildings
Struts supporting roof of washing area apply out of plane load to masonry wall.

Concentrated areas of high loading
12Concentrated areas of high loading
Storage is generally at ground floor level in eastern side of building and at first floor level in western side of building. Storage is generally well managed, with some concentrated areas of high loading. Building Engineer indicates structure designed for 5kPa imposed load throughout.
Mixed storage at first floor (west)
1.5m – 2m
1.5m – 2m
13Concentrated areas of high loading
Plastic water tanks observed at roof level along west side of main building.
Western side of roof of main building
Approx. 1.3m
Large reinforced concrete water tank on roof of stair core between east and west sides of main building.
West side
East side
14Concentrated areas of high loading
Solid masonry wall supported on first floor slab off column/beam line.
Finished floor level in washroom lower than main floor
Washroom floor finished level lower than main production floor level. Build up in washroom could not be determined.

Priority 1(Immediate - Now)
Item 1 and actions
Structural design of undocumented vertical extension
• None required.
Priority 2(within 6-weeks)
• None required.
Priority 3(within 6-months)
• Building Engineer to review the structural design of the undocumented steel shed structure at roof level. Particular attention to be paid to i) member strength and stiffness ii) connection details and iii) lateral stability .
• ‘As built’ structural drawings to be completed/updated to include steel shed at roof level.
• ‘As built’ structural drawings to be updated, as required, following any future modifications to the building or strengthening works to structural elements.

Priority 1(Immediate - Now)
Item 2 and actions
Non-engineered outbuildings
• None required.
Priority 2(within 6-weeks)
• None required.
Priority 3(within 6-months)
• Building Engineer to review the adequacy of non-engineered structures throughout complex. Particular attention should be paid to the stability of these structures and connection details.
18
Priority 1(Immediate - Now)
Item 3 and actions
Concentrated areas of high loading
• None required.
Priority 2(within 6-weeks)
• None required.
Priority 3(within 6-months)
• Building Engineer to develop load plans for the main production building accounting for usage, floor build ups, solid partition walls, material weight and areas of concentrated loading.
• Factory management to implement load plans.
