The perfect starting point: Gearbox position monitoring.

Movement is not always a good thing. This is true, in particular, if the movement relates to the drive train of your WTG. Where fracturing of the main bearing remains undetected, the gearbox itself moves up to 9 mm towards the rear. In axial direction, this movement is restricted by the pedestal bearings. This is where the loads of the drive train is applied on the planet carrier bearings and therefore on your wallet.

The loads will damage the planet carrier bearings and therefore the entire gearbox. To ensure that the situation does not reach such aserious level, the position of the gearbox can be permanently monitored using two inductive proximity switches. If the position changes, a fault message is sent to the remote monitoring center immediately. The turbine will be automatically stopped and you always stay one step ahead of any movements with serious consequences.

Although a major component like the gearbox is large and tan-gible it is, however, diffi cult to detect when potential problems are about to occur, as these often start, hardly noticeable, at minute levels. Problems can be caused by particles suspended in the gear oil, which at 0.003 mm are hardly larger than bacteria, tiny metal particles or movement of the gearbox by only a centimeter which can cause total failure.

Considerable experience is required to detect the fi rst indications and act accordingly. Availon has this experience and uses it to develop upgrades that prevent serious damage and, among other benefi ts, considerably increase the service life of the gearbox. Kidney loop fi ltration ensures that there is no “sand” in the gearbox but, instead, clean oil at all times.

Gearboxes are often like life itself, with important inner values. In this particular case these values relate, to the oil, as it is one of the most decisive factors for the service life of a gearbox. The design of many systems does, however, only allow a fi ltration of particles and oil aging products from a size of 10 μm onwards. And it is precisely for these systems that we have developed kidney loop fi ltration. The compact pump and fi lter unit siphons the oil from the lowest part of the gearbox. The oil is then cleaned in the unit and returned to the gearbox. Particles of 3 μm and greater are removed and the moisture dissolved in the oil is absorbed. The additives, on the other hand, remain dissolved in the gearbox oil.This ensures a constantfl ow of high-qualityoil instead of expensive payments for frequent changes, as intervals can be extended to over 60 months.

A real plus below zero: IceFree sensors.

Sub-zero temperatures don’t aff ect gearbox fl uid. But they do aff ect components outside of the nacelle. Anemometers and weather vanes will ice up quickly, even at temperatures around the freezing point. That only leaves two options: Call in a service team or hope for better weather. Both options take time. All the while, the sensors register wind speeds of 0.0 m/s – with disastrous consequences.

The WTG stays idle due to the incorrect reading and produces no energy despite the wind. It is not unusual to lose up to 5,000 eurosper turbine and winter season. But there is a solution: IceFree sensors off er a proven heating system that that can withstand even extreme sub-zero temperatures.
