In the same way as your success as an operator of WTGs dependson wind and weather, your WTGs must react reliably to these conditions.Thunderstorms and grid fl uctuations caused by weather conditions are only two of the occurrences that can considerably aff ect the grid. Overvoltages and undervoltages are often the result. In such situations, WTGs must reliably disconnect from the grid and reliably reconnect again at a later stage.

This task is carried out by the circuit breaker, carrying out some 2,500 to 3,000 switching operations each year. As its delicate mechanics are highly stressed during each operation, wear and the resulting maintenance are considerable. There is also the danger of thermal overloading and malfunctioning. Incorrect disconnection of the circuit breaker can cause expensive damage to the frequency converter.

Our Availon grid-coupling contactor for GE® 1.5 WTGs divides

the existing task of the circuit breaker into two:

• The grid-coupling contactor handles most of the regular

switching operations of the system and has been designed

for 250,000 switching operations at the rated current

(mechanical life of fi ve million switching operations).

• The circuit breaker handles the overcurrent and under-

voltage protection. Its switching operations are therefore

on average reduced to a maximum of 20 to 30 per year.

The best solution: Divide the work.

Reduce stress, increase service life.It is a well known fact that by reducing stress, service life is increased. In case of the circuit breaker, stress in series connection with our grid-coupling contactor is so low that you as the operator will save on most of the maintenance costs for this component. With up to 250,000 switching operations, our grid-coupling contactor has more than enough capacity to cover the entire service life of your WTG. A positive side eff ect: as faults on the grid-coupling contactor and on the circuit breaker are mostly history, the availability of your WTGs will also increase considerably.
