You can see Jakarta growing and expanding, with new suburbs springing up on its outskirts and new high-risesreaching for the sky in the downtown area. The hub of themodern city is Taman Merdeka (Independence Square),which is dominated by the showy, 132 metre tall NationalMonument, crowned by a glittering, stylised metal ame.Taman Fatahilla is the epicentre of Kota, the original heartof Dutch Batavia, and still has a sprinkling of picturesqueold buildings.

The nearby Glodok district is the heart of Jakarta’s substantial Chinese community, and in recent years hasalso seen gentrication. Over the last decade Jakarta has become a major shopping destination, with numerous brand new,air-conditioned shopping malls springing up all over thecity, in competition with established malls and departmentstores such as Blok M, while international departmentstore chains such as Sogo, Mark’s and Spencer’s andMetro have also made an appearance.

Good buys include traditional ikat and batik textiles, traditional and modern wood carvings from Bali and otherislands, antique pottery and Dutch colonial antiques(though these are very often faked). Many internationalsports and leisure wear brands have factories in Jakartaand sports footwear, sports clothing and designer wear areavailable at good prices.

Taman Anggrek is the city’s largest shopping and leisure mall and is part of a huge residential tower complex on theairport toll road, so it is convenient for last-minuteshopping before you leave Jakarta. Seven oors of shopssell designer fashions, sportswear, electronic goods,souvenirs, gifts and authentic antiques. It also has anextensive food court. It is a favourite weekend spot forIndonesian families, with an average of 100,000 visitorseach weekend.

Blok M is the city’s longest established mall and is a popular local rendezvous, with cafés, bars and restaurantsalong with an extensive array of designer boutiques,


drugstores and souvenir stores. There are gift boutiquesand arts and craft stores in the lobbies of most of thelarge international hotels along Jalan Thamrin, as well asinternational newsstands. Also on Jalan Thamrin is theagship branch of Sarinah, the Indonesian departmentstore chain – it sells batik clothing, designer wear, sportsequipment and leisure goods and is a good place to pickup bargain priced tropical clothing, swimwear andcamping equipment.

Jalan Jaksa, the old-fashioned shopping street that is also where most of Jakarta’s budget travel facilities arelocated. It is lined with antique and craft stores, sellingChinese and Indonesian antique pottery, wood carving,textiles, colonial-style furniture and brassware. There is athriving trade in ‘antique’ navigational aids such assextants, ships’ compasses and chronometers, all ofwhich, though apparently aged, are in fact newly made inlocal workshops. Do not be ashamed to haggledeterminedly over prices – the initial asking price willalways be very much more than the price you nally agreeto pay.

Palaza Senayan has a good choice of Indonesian designer boutiques, including Sebastian’s, Ghea and Biyan, all ofwhich oer stylish modern evening wear and colourfultraditional dresses, suits, jackets, shirts and blouses. TheSogo Seni handicraft centre, with Plaza Senayan’s branchof Sogo, has one of the best selections of Indonesianhandicrafts.
