enjoyunesco Euphrasian Basilica Euphrasius-BasilikaIn the long history of the city of Poreč, one relatively short period of time was to change its destiny for ever. The small provincial town on the margins of the moribund Roman Empire went through a remarkable transformation in the 6th century. Attempting at this time to pull the disunited empire together, Emperor Justinian created for a short space the illusion of the one-time whole. But not only a territorial and political whole. He also attempted to bring back the brilliance of the art of the ancient world. During the full flowering of Justinian’s reconquista, Euphrasius, Bishop of Poreč, had a cathedral built on the site of the older city basilica, harmonising it with a series of accompanying buildings that were together to create one of the great architectural complexes of the time. Here, on the northern edge of a peninsula on which a few centuries earlier the model Roman city of Parentium had been built, the taste, the brilliance and the stylistic richness of the East were to develop into a new whole that would be a genuine mark of the time. Ein relativ kurzer Zeitabschnitt in der langen Geschichte der Stadt Poreč hat ihr Schicksal für immer verän-dert. Am Rande des untergehenden römischen Reiches erlebt die kleine Provinzstadt im 6. Jh. nämlich eine wundersame Verwandlung. Der Kai-ser Justinian versucht zu dieser Zeit, das geteilte Reich wieder zu vereinen und schaffte kurzweilig den Eindruck der ehemaligen Einheit und dies nicht nur auf territorialer, sondern auch auf politischer Ebene. Zudem versucht er den Glanz der antiken Kunst wieder zurückzuerlangen. In der Blütezeit Justinians Rückerobe-rung, lässt Bischof Euphrasius dann die Basilika auf den Grundmauern der Vorgängerbauten errichten und baut neben der Kathedrale einige Nebengebäude, die gemeinsam ei-nes der größten Kirchenkomplexe dieser Zeit darstellen werden. Ein paar Jahrhunderte früher wurde hier, entlang des nördlichen Randes der Halbinsel die römische Stadt Parentium erbaut; Geschmack, Glanz und stilistischer Reichtum des Ostens wuchsen somit zu einer neuen Einheit zusammen und wurden zu einem echten Wahrzeichen jener Zeit.

The Walls WandoberflächenIf we pass from space to the wall surfaces of Euphrasiana, here too we shall find, in the brilliance of the mosaics, supreme artistic values. We shall also find iconographic innovations used for the first time in the west. In Poreč, the Virgin occupies a central place in the apse, which had previously belonged only to Christ. She sits on a throne and on her knee she holds the baby Jesus, dressed in Roman ceremonial clothing, right hand raised for blessing. On each side of Mary there is an angel leading the throngs that have come to hail her. From Mary’s left side come three unnamed martyrs with wreaths in their hands and haloes above their heads. They too are dressed like angels in Roman ceremonial robes. On the other side behind the angels is Saint Maurus, shown in the same way as the previous three martyrs, but with his name written in with the halo. This saint and bishop of Poreč leads an exceptionally interesting group made up of three living people, three contemporaries: Bishop Euphrasius holding a model of his basilica in his hand, Archdeacon Claudius, Euphrasius’s brother, and a boy between them, whom we identify from the legend as the son of the Archdeacon, named, like his uncle, Euphrasius. Besonderen Wert dieses außerordentlichen Denkmals bilden die Wandoberflächen der Euphrasius-Basilika mit ihren herrlich, glänzenden Mosaiken. Es sind Beispiele höchster Kunstfertigkeit. Auch hier treffen wir auf eine ikonografische Neuerung, welche zum ersten Mal auf westlichem Boden angewendet wurde. In Poreč nämlich, nimmt die Muttergottes den zentralen Platz in der Apsis ein, der bisher nur Christus gehört hatte. Sie sitzt auf einem Thron und hält und das Jesuskind auf ihrem Schoß, der in römischer Festkleidung gekleidet ist und die rechte Hand zum Segensgestus erhebt. Links und rechts von Maria steht jeweils ein Engel, der eine Gruppe anführt und die gekommen ist, um die Muttergottes zu grüssen. Umgeben wird die Hl. Jungfrau Maria zu ihrer linken Seite von drei unbenannten Märtyrern mit Kränzen in den Händen und Heiligenscheinen über den Köpfen. Sie sind, genau wie die Engel, in römische Festkleidung gekleidet. Auf der anderen Seite, hinter dem Engel befindet sich der Heilige Maurus, der ebenso einen Kranz in den Händen trägt und dessen Name neben dem Heiligenschein geschrieben steht. Der Bischof von Poreč und der Heilige leiten eine ausgesprochen interessante Gruppe von lebendigen Menschen, den drei Zeitgenossen: Bischof Euphrasius, der die Basilika in Kleinformat in seinen Händen hält, Erzdiakon Claudius, der Bruder des Bischofs Euphrasius und ein Junge mit einer Inschrift, aus der wir erfahren, dass er der Sohn von Erzdiakon ist und dessen Name genau wie sein Onkel Euphrasius ist.

Of course, it must have required a deal of audacity for the donor, together with two other contem-poraries, close relatives at that, to step into the space meant for those much higher in the celestial hierarchy. However, Euphrasius quite clearly was not an ordinary mortal, a rebel who dared to set strict church standards at defiance. The angels and the holy martyrs from the train that surrounds the Madonna on the throne, in spite of their fine Roman clothing, have faces and gestures that are to some extent typical. As against them, the living characters that approach the heavenly throne without haloes are shown in an individual way, as if it were really a matter of portraits. Es erforderte selbstver-ständlich außergewöhnlichen Mut, sich als Donator mit noch zwei Zeitgenossen, die zudem nahe Verwandte waren, in denjenigen Raum zu begeben, der nur für viel Höhere in der himmlischen Hierar-chie bestimmt war. Allerdings war Euphrasius offensichtlich kein Nor-malsterblicher und ein Revoluzzer, der die strengen religiösen Normen zu stören wagte. Die dargestellten Engel und heiligen Märtyrer, die die Muttergottes auf ihrem Thron umgeben, haben trotz der schönen römischen Kleidung eher etwas stereotypische Gesichter und Ge-sten. Im Gegensatz dazu wurden die lebendigen Gestalten die zum Himmelsthron ohne Heiligenschein schreiten, stärker individualisiert dargestellt, als würde es sich wirklich um Porträts handeln.

The Mosaics MosaikeThe mosaics did not cover just the interior of the church, they can also be found outside as well, on the front above the narthex. From the parts that have been preserved it is difficult to gain an impression of the original appearance, since the mosaics in the upper part have almost completely disappeared, and in the lower part were changed during 19th century restoration. The destroyed mosaics on the pediment had a picture of Christ sitting on a globe, below which four stylised heavenly rivers run, there being four apostles on the left. The lower part has two apostles in each field at the edge, while in the two central fields, separated by a window, are seven apocalyptic candlesticks. Die Mosaike befanden sich nicht nur im Kircheninneren, sondern auch draußen an der Stirnseite über dem Narthex. Die Mosaike im oberen Abschnitt sind kaum mehr erhalten geblieben und daher ist es schwierig, sich einen Eindruck über das ursprüngliche Aussehen zu schaffen. Im unteren Abschnitt wurden sie bei der Restauration im späten 19. Jahrhundert verändert. Die beschädigten Mosaike im Dachgiebel enthalten eine Darstellung des, auf dem Himmelsgewölbe thronenden Christus und vier Flüsse des Paradieses sowie links davon jeweils vier Apostel. Im unteren Randabschnitt befinden sich jeweils zwei Apostel sowie neben dem Fenster sieben apokalyptische Leuchter.

The Batana Eco-museum under the auspices of UNESCO Ökomuseum Batana unter dem Schutz von UNESCO The Batana Eco-museum in Rovinj was included in the Register of best practices in safeguarding intangible cultural world heritage at the annual session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, held from 28th November until 2nd December 2016 in Addis Ababa. Das Ökomu-seum Batana in Rovinj wurde bei der jährlichen Sitzung des Ausschusses von Regierungsvertretern für den Erhalt des immateriellen Kulturerbes von UNESCO, abgehalten vom 28. November bis 02. Dezember 2016 in Adis Abeba, in das Register der besten Praktiken des Erhalts des immateriellen Weltkulturerbes eingereiht. The Batana Eco-museum project represents a unique approach to the safeguarding of the complete tangible and intangi-ble heritage of Rovinj based on an initiative taken by local inhabitants and development projects by skilled professionals. Das Projekt Ökomuseum Batana stellt einen einzigartigen Zugang zum Erhalt des gesamten mate-riellen und immateriellen Erbes Rovinjs aufgrund der Initiative der lokalen Einwohnerschaft und des Entwicklungsprojekts tüchtiger Fachleute dar.

The sea has always signified life, and in order to overcome this blue vastness, they built a batana - a small, seemingly fragile but still powerful boat whose flat bottom outfaces even the most powerful sea currents and waves. This vessel has been in use since ancient times, although it was not intended for deep sea sailing, but rather for shallow water navigation along the Istrian coast. Furthermore, it has fed generations and generations of Rovinj residents, by bringing the wealth of the sea to the table. Die Einwohner Istriens sind seit jeher dem Meer und dessen zahlreichen Wohltaten zugewandt, und eine besondere Verbindung mit dem Meer pflegen die Einwohner Rovinjs. The Batana House project successfully turns back the clock through the animated spacio, the former heart of Rovinj social life, but also the batana, a boat that could frequently have been seen in the port of Rovinj in the past, and because of this the traditional everyday life of the fishermen too. Das Projekt ‘Haus des Batana’ versetzt uns durch das Aufleben des Spacio, das Herz des einstigen Gesellschaftslebens von Rovinj, aber auch durch das batana, ein in der Vergangenheit häufiges hölzernes Schiffchen im Hafen von Rovinj und dadurch auch ein traditioneller Alltag im Leben der Fischer, erfolgreich in der Zeit zurück.

SpacioSpacio was once a very popular place for taking a break from a busy day, a place where a drop of wine could be drunk, or where you could have a fried fish snack, play cards and sing. The word spacio in dialect means a place where wine is ‘consumed’ or sold in retail. It is difficult to determine the exact time of occurrence of such meeting places, but it is known that they existed as early as the time of the ancient Romans. The first records of the existence of this spacio date back to the 19th century, while in Rovinj’s golden age there used to be more than a hundred of them, although their popularity began to decline during the 1960s. The Spacio was most commonly found in a store, and if it contained a fireplace, the owner would often offer food, mostly fish from the local fishermen’s daily catch. With good wine and fish, people would play card games Briscola or Tresette, and would also sing Bitinada, a type of song in which singers imitate instruments with their voices. Spacio war einst ein besonders populärer Ort für eine Verschnaufpause nach einem anstrengen Tag, ein Ort an welchem man ein viertel Wein trinken, ein paar gebackene Fische knabbern, Karten spielen und singen konnte. Das Wort spacio bezeichnet im Dialekt einen Ort an welchem man „verbraucht“, beziehungswiese Wein in kleinen Mengen verkauft. Es ist schwer, die genaue Zeit der Entstehung solcher Orte fürs Beisammensein zu bestimmen, aber man weiß, dass diese bereits zur Zeit der Römer bestanden. Die ersten Verzeichnungen über das Bestehen von spacios datieren aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, während es in der goldenen Zeit in Rovinj über hunderte gab. Deren Popularität beginnt etwa in den sechziger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts abzufallen. Ein Spacio befand sich am häufigsten in irgendeinem Magazin, und falls es dort auch einen Feuerplatz gab, hat der Besitzer auch Speisen angeboten, am häufigsten Fisch aus dem Fang der lokalen Fischer. Zu einem guten Tropfen Wein und Fisch wurden auch Karten gespielt (briškula oder tre-šete), aber auch die bitinada gesungen, ein Lied in welchem die Sänger mit den Stimmen Instrumente nachahmen.

Two-part singing and playing in the Istrian Scale is a complex style of folk music found even outside Istria and the Croatian Littoral, but it is most compactly preserved precisely in this area. Basically, two-part singing is based on non-tempered tone relations and a characteristic colour of tone that is achieved in vocal music by powerful singing, partly through the nose. Most of tone rows consist of four to six tones. Metro-rhythmical organization, formal structure and structure of the sung text range from simple to very complex patterns, and the relationship between music and lyrics is specific. Die Zweistimmigkeit enger Intervalle aus Istrien und dem kroatischen Küstenland ist ein komplexer Stil der Folkloremusik, die wir auch außerhalb Istriens und der Kroatischen Meeresküste vorfinden, jedoch genau in diesem Gebiet lebt der kompakteste davon. Die Zweistimmigkeit basiert auf dem untemperierten Klangspektrum und der charakteristischen Stimmfarbe, welche man bei der Vokalmusik durch kräftiges Singen, teils durch die Nase, erreicht. Die meisten tonalen Abfolgen setzen sich aus vier bis sechs Tönen zusammen. Die Metrorythmischen, formellen Strukturen und Textstrukturen bewegen sich von einfachen bis zu komplizierten Vorlagen, wobei die Beziehung zwischen Musik und Text spezifisch ist.

Istria on UNESCO list of world intan-gible heritage Istrien in der UNESCO-Liste des immateriellen Weltkulturer-bes An important part of UNESCO work refers to the creation of international legal instruments - con-ventions, declarations and recommendations, amongst which there is also the Convention for the Safeguard of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Intangible cultural goods can consist in a variety of forms and appearances of spiritual creation which may be transferred by legend or in some other way, particularly language and dialects, oral literature, folklore creation in music, dance, legend, plays, rituals, and habits as well as other traditional folk values, traditional skills and crafts. The first promulgation of intangible heritage was held in autumn 2009 when up to seven Croatian goods were included in the UNESCO list, including Two-part Narrow Interval Singing (Istria and Croatian Littoral).

Ein wichtiger Arbeitsbereich der UNESCO, bezieht sich auf die Erstellung internationaler juristischer Instrumente - Konventionen, Deklarationen und Darbringungen, zu der auch die Konvention des Weltkulturerbes gehört. Das immaterielle Weltkulturerbe kann eine unterschiedliche Form und Erscheinungsbild geistiger Kreativität sein, und wird durch Übertragung von Generation zu Generation überliefert, besonders Sprache und Dialekte, mündliche Literatur, Folklore in den Bereichen Musik, Tanz, Ausdrucksformen, Spiele ,Fähigkeiten, Tradition, so wie andere traditionell volkstümliche Werte, traditionelle Künste und Handwerk. Die erste Neueinschreibung des immateriellen Weltkulturerbes wurde im Herbst 2009 entschieden, als sogar sieben kroatische Güter in die UNESCO - Liste aufgenommen wurden einschließlich die Zweistimmigkeit der engen Intervalle (Istrien und Kroatisches Küstenland).

Traditional instruments in Istria Traditionelle Instrumente in Istrien Musical instruments are tools in the real sense of the word. Thought, made or adapted to assist man in the creation of music, and especially all those sounds that the human body is unable to produce independently. By themselves, the instruments are part of the material culture, but their function to create music is intangible. Musikinstrumente sind im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes Werkzeuge. Erfunden, gebaut oder angepasst, wurden sie um dem Mensch beim Musizieren zu dienen und um all jene Töne oder Geräusche hervorzubringen, die der menschliche Körper nicht selbst hervorbringen kann. Die Musikinstrumente sind ein Teilbereich der materiellen Kultur, jedoch erzeugen sie mittels ihre Funktion Musik, welche zum immateriellen Kulturgut gehört. In Southern Istria wind instruments prevail, and it can be assumed that in the past the dominance extended to the north. In these areas, in fact, most of the popular names that indicate the playing ares linked to the logic of brass. On Buzeština the general term for playing is sopet (literally blow), without taking into account whether it is a clarinet, a fiddle or a bajs (small double bass). In the area of Buje, in part of the Kopar area and in Ćićarija the term in use is piskat (to beep), and even if its literal meaning is to play a wind instruments, it is also used for the violin, tamburitza, drum and guitar. Despite a high number of copies of musical instruments in the holdings of the Ethnographic Museum of Istria, it should be noted that in terms of typology they only partially represent a much larger number of types of instruments recorded on the field. In Süd-Istrien kommen überwiegen Blasinstrumente zum Einsatz, vermutlich waren diese aber in der Vergangenheit auch in den nördlichen Gebieten stark vertreten. In diesen Gebieten nämlich werden die Volksbegriffe des Musizierens größten Teils mit Blasinstrumenten in Verbindung gebracht. In der Umgebung von Buzet wird der allgemeine Ausdruck sopeti (wörtlich ‘pusten’) verwendet, ohne darauf zu achten, ob es sich somit um die Klarinette, die Violine oder das Streichinstrument Bajs handelt. In der Bujština, im Abschnitt der Koparština und im Ćićarija Gebiet wird die Bezeichnung ‘piskati’ (piepen) benutzt. Diese Bezeichnung bedeutet wörtlich ‘Blasinstrument spielen’ und wird ebenso für die Violine, die Tamburica (einer Art Mandoline), das Schlagzeug und die Gitarre verwendet. Es sei darauf hingewiesen, dass, trotz der beneidenswerten Anzahl an Musikinstrumenten im Fundus des Ethnografischen Museums Istriens, diese Instrumente in Bezug auf die Typologie nur teilweise eine größere Anzahl an Musikinstrumentenarten repräsentieren, die auf dem Gebiet verzeichnet wurden.

In the end, the most successful makers are the ones who manage to combine some formal and symbolic appearance of the instrument while predicting and realizing its acoustic functionality. Der große Erfolg im traditionellen Musikinstrumentenbau resultiert im besonderen Maß aus den individuellen Fähigkeiten des technischen Denkens und dem handwerklichen Geschick des Musikinstrumentenbauers, aber auch in der Fortsetzung dieser Tradition. Die erfolgreichsten Musikinstrumentenbauer sind am Ende diejenigen, die es schaffen, das entsprechende formelle und symbolische Aussehen des Musikinstruments mit Voraussicht und der Umsetzung ihrer akustischen Funktion zu verbinden.

Ivan Fonović-Zlatela Was born in a village near Kršan called Lazarići in 1868. His father was a carpenter, and he also made the sopele. Ivan learned his trade from him, as was the custom, after his death, he took over the workshop. He dedicated himself to building sopele and perfected himself in this craft. He made them mostly from boxwood, and the vast majority of his great sopele have five holes for playing. Since he was a great player and a good entertainer, he became known far and wide. Due to the small number of makers and the high quality craftsmanship, his instruments eventually became highly prized and sought after. Individuals came on foot even from places distant tens of kilometres for playing lessons and to learn how to make double reeds. He worked until his death in 1947, and after him, almost symbolically, remained a pair of unfinished sopele. Wurde 1868 im Dorf Lazarići in der Nähe von Kršan geboren. Sein Vater war Zimmermann und fertigte zudem das charakteristische Musikinstrument Istriens, die Sopele an. Ivan erlernte das Handwerk bei seinem Vater und übernahm, so wie es der Brauch war, nach dessen Tod die Zimmerei. Er widmete sich insbesondere dem Bau der Sopela, den er über die Jahre immer weiter perfektionierte. Die Sopele fertigte er größtenteils aus Buchsbaumholz an. Die Mehrzahl seiner großen „Vela Sopela“ sind Fünf-Loch-Flöten. Da er selbst ein großartiger Flötenspieler und ein guter Unterhaltungskünstler war, wurde er weit und breit bekannt. Aufgrund der wenigen Musikinstrumentenbauer und der hohen Verarbeitungsqualität wurden seine Musikinstrumente hochgeschätzt und waren sehr gefragt. Vereinzelte Personen kamen sogar zu Fuß aus den zehn Kilometern entfernten Orten hierher, um das Spielen des Instruments und den doppelten Flötenpiepton zu erlernen. Ivan Fonović-Zlatela arbeitete bis zu seinem Tod im Jahre 1947. Beinahe symbolisch ist ein Paar unvollendeter Sopela nach ihm hinterblieben.

If you continue further along the track, through Šišan and Valtura, you’ll reach Kavran, and shortly after that Loborika, a place which name seems originates from a certain Laberius, owner of a Roman property. Sited along the roman road that once was connecting Pula and Liburnia, the so called Via Flanatica, the next town which you are going to meet is Marčana. Many times heavily affected by pest and poverty epidemics, the place was almost led to extinction. If you continue further, you’ll get to the wonderful Vodn-jan. It is a town that vaunts its multiculturalism, numerous churches and imperious palac-es, out of which worth paying attention is the gothic palace of the count Bettica and nu-merous stone effigies on the of building’s façades - in its largest Parish church, that of St Blaise, it offers many surpris-es. Indeed, the monumental baroque church, built in 1761 on the remains of a pre-Roman one, is an authentic treasury, including from 1984 a special collection of ecclesiastical art with many precious pieces. Motovun is a town with an incredibly pictur-esque, if not sometimes turbulent history. A pioneer of music printing was born and mar-ried here, the inventor of a propeller lived and worked here, and during the dreary peri-od of World War II, one of the world’s largest automotive champions spent his childhood here. From the forest of Motovun and the railway station at the foot of the hill up to the highest point, the bell tower shaken by the most famous Istrian giant, visitors can walk through the town’s two millennia long histo-ry, explore its Istrian myths and the coexist-ence of noblemen and peasants and meet its most famous inhabitants through an unfor-gettable story - a History in Motion.

Motovun ist ein Städtchen von unglaublich lebendi-ger, manchmal auch turbulenter Vergangenheit. Hier wurde der Pionier des musikalischen Druckwesens geboren und wuchs heran, lebte und wirkte der Erfin-der der Schiffsschraube, und in den melancholischen Zeiten des Zweiten Weltkriegs verbrachte einer der größten mondänen Auto-Moto Assen seine Kindheit hier. High on the hilltop overlooking the Boljun field stands Paz, re-sembling an eagle’s nest, with a superb view of the surround-ings. A castle was erected on this site because of the strategic and defensive importance just like many others built in the in-terior of Istria. It was mentioned for the first time in the 12th c. as Pas, Pass, later Pasperc and Passberg, as the property of the Patriarchs of Aquileia. In the 14th c. it became part of the Pazin County. In the beginning of the 16th c. Paz was taken over by the Barbo family who left an indelible imprint on this area in the centuries to come.Wie ein Adlernest mit gutem Ausblick über die Umgebung liegt Paz an einem hohen Hü-gel über Boljunsko Polje. Jh. als Pas, Pass, später als Pasterc und Passberg im Besitz der Patriarchen von Aquileia. Vom 14. Jh. an gehörte der Ort zur Grafschaft von Pa-zin. Zu Beginn des 16. Jh. wurde der Ort von Familie Barbo über-nommen, die in späteren Jahr-hunderten diesem Gebiet ihren Stempel aufdrückten.

In the 2nd millennium BC this hill-fort settlement was inhabited by the Liburnians, ancient seafarers and pirates. The arrival of the Ro-mans brings battles for suprem-acy, so life moves to Plomin Bay. Owing to the great importance of Plomin, Roman Flanona, Kvarner acquires the name Sinus Flanati-cus. Under the Roman influence, the population of that area, as well as entire Istria, accepts Roman deities, and from that time dates the relief of Silvanus, the pagan god of woods, today standing on St. George’s Church. In dieser Gradina-Siedlung lebten an diesem Ort bereits im 2. Jahr-tausend vor Christus Liburner, Seefahrer und Piraten aus weit zurück liegenden Zeiten. Mit den Römern kam es zu Kämpfen um die Macht, so dass das Leben in die Bucht von Plomin verlegt wurde. Die Bedeutung von Plo-min, des damaligen Flanona, übertrug sich auf den Namen Sinus Flanaticus für den ganzen Quarner. Die damalige Bevölke-rung, wie auch das übrige Istrien, nahm unter römischem Einfluss den Glauben an ihre Götter an. Aus dieser Zeit stammt das Relief des heidnischen Gottes Silvanus, des Beschützers von Flora und Fauna, das heute an der Kirche des Hl. Georg zu sehen ist.

A whopping 60 Istrian olive growers and oil producers were classified alongside the 500 best olive oils from around the world. And fi-nally, Istria would like to present its Olive Oil Roads with the sole purpose of acquainting you with the oil mills, olive growers and cellars situated throughout the Istrian peninsula.

Giant omelet with truffles Buzet, 09.09.Riesige Frittata (Omelett) mit TrüffelnThe truffle is the supreme delicacy that had been enjoyed by the Mesopota-mian rulers 4000 years ago, and it is still one of the most prestigious food-stuffs in world gastronomy. This intense flavour royal mushroom was known to the ancient Greeks and the Roman emperors, and it was also served at the French court and among the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy. In 1999 Buzet was proclaimed the City of Truffles. Motovun forest, is the largest area rich in Istri-an white truffle (tuber magnatum), this valuable and highly esteemed fungus whose value is measured in grams. It has a specific smell, somewhat unusual shape, but is exceptionally aromatic and tasty. In addition to the white truffle this area is rich in other species of black truffles. Every year, the second week-end in September, before the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (Day of the City of Buzet, traditional Subotina) a giant omelet with truffles (over 2000 eggs and 10 kg truffles) is prepared on Fontana square in a pan of about 1000 kg, measuring 2.5 m in diameter. This marks the beginning of Truffle Days in Istria. The season of white truffles lasts from September to the end of November, which is the ideal time for your palate to taste this delicacy. Black truffles are harvested from January to September. Der Trüffel, eine außergewöhnliche De-likatesse, die schon vor 4000 Jahre den Gaumen mesopotamischer Herrscher reizte, gilt auch heute als eine der renommiertesten Zutaten internationaler Gastronomie. Im Jahr 1999 wurde Buzet zur Stadt des Trüffels in der Zone der Trüffel ernannt, welche sich durch drei Verwaltungsgebiete erstreckt: die Stadt Buzet, die Gemeinde Oprtalj und die Gemeinde Motovun. Im Zentrum dieses Dreiecks befindet sich der Motovuner Wald, Quartier des istrischen weißen Trüffels (tuber magnatum), einer kostbaren Kohlrübe, deren Wert in Gramm gemessen wird. Er hat einen spezifischen Geruch, sieht fast unansehnlich aus, hat aber einen extraordinären Geschmack. Dieses Gebiet ist neben dem wei-ßen Trüffel auch reich an anderen Arten des schwarzen Trüffels. Jedes Jahr, am zweiten Wochenende im Monat September, angesichts des kirchlichen Feier-tags der Hl. Maria der Kleinen, wenn der Tag der Stadt Buzet gefeiert wird, der populäre ‚Subotina‘, wird am Marktplatz Fontana eine riesige Frittata mit Trüf-feln mit mehr als 2000 Eiern und 10 kg Trüffel, in einer etwa 1000 Kilogramm schweren Pfanne, mit einem Durchmesser von 2.5 Meter, zubereitet! Damit beginnen auch die Tage des Trüffels in Istrien. Die Saison des weißen Trüffels dauert von September bis Ende November, während von Januar bis Septem-ber der schwarze Trüffel gesammelt wird.

Don’t get scared by the amount of towns in this post about Istria - they are all tiny (including the smallest one in the world!) and are located close to each other. Istria is a charming region, in fact, one of my favorite destinations in Europe! Here are the towns that are must visit and my recommendation for the things to do there: Lass dich nicht von der Menge der Städte in diesem Post über Istri-en einschüchtern - sie sind alle winzig (inklusive der kleinsten Stadt der Welt) und liegen alle nahe aneinander. Istrien ist eine charman-te Region, tatsächlich eine meiner beliebtesten Destinationen in Europa! Hier sind die Städte, welche ein Muss sind und meine Emp-fehlungen der Dinge, die man dort machen sollte: 1. Rovinj-Rovigno Did you know that Rovinj is THE most popular Croatian destination by the amount of nights? No wonder, Rovinj is a pure seaside bliss! Even if I usually try to escape touristic places, Rovinj is just too pretty and I was enchanted by it! Shiny stones of the cobblestone streets, local market with delicious treats, little boats everywhere and a bell tower with the postcard-like view…It does not matter how many days you decide to stay - 1 day or 1 week, it won’t disappoint! Even though it is extremely romantic, it is not only for lovebirds! Both families and a large group of friends will find what to do in Rovinj. Wusstest du, dass Rovinj DIE belieb-teste kroatische Destination anhand der Übernachtungen ist? Kein Wunder, Rovinj ist eine wahre Wonne am Meer! Obwohl ich übli-cherweise versuche, touristische Plätze zu meiden, ist Rovinj ein-fach zu hübsch und ich war von ihr verzaubert! Glänzende Steine auf den gepflasterten Straßen, lokale Märkte mit schmackhaften Delikatessen, kleine Boote überall und ein Glockenturm mit einer Postkarten ähnlichen Aussicht… Es ist egal, wie viele Tage du dich zu bleiben entscheidest - 1 Tag oder 1 Woche, du wirst nicht ent-täuscht sein! Obwohl Rovinj extrem romantisch ist, ist es nicht nur für Verliebte! Sowohl Familien als auch große Freundesgruppen werden wissen, was in Rovinj gemacht werden kann.

Boljun, is a town in north-east-ern Istria, located on a hilltop above the road connecting Paz and Lupoglav, with a wide view over the fertile valley of Bol-junčica river and Učka moun-tain mass. Boljun Castle was built and upgraded from the 11th until 17th century, and at the time of the wars suc-cessfully provided shelter to the inhabitants of Boljun and its surrounding areas. An en-chanting view can be seen of the Boljunčica valley from the area by the round stone table. If you stop here, you can easily imagine how the defenders of Boljun back in 1612 observed the arrival of an army of Vene-tian mercenaries from Plomin. At that time, out of all the castles of the Pazin area, only Boljun and Pazin successfully resisted the attacks...Boljun, ein Städtchen im nordöstlichen Istrien, hat sich auf einer Anhöhe oberhalb der Straße, welche Paz und Lupog-lav verbindet, niedergelassen, mit einem breiten Blick auf das fruchtbare Tal von Boljunčica und dem Gebirgsmassiv des Učka. Das Kastel von Boljun wurde vom 11. bis zum 17. Jahrhundert gebaut und erwei-tert, und zu Kriegszeiten bot es den Einwohnern von Boljun und der Umgebung erfolgreich Zuflucht. Beim runden Stein-tisch bietet sich ein schöner Blick auf das Tal Boljunčica. Falls Sie hier pausieren, kön-nen Sie sich leicht vorstellen wie die Verteidiger von Boljun im weit entfernten Jahr 1612 die Ankunft der Armee der venezianischen Söldner aus Richtung Plomin betrachtet haben. großartig erhaltenen Stadtmauern und Türme lieben, welche zu-rück in die Zeit der Römer reicht. Die Stadt Umag hat ein emsiges Touristenzentrum dank ihrer bezaubernden Strände und der na-türlichen Schönheiten ringsum der Stadt. 8. Hum-Colmo The smallest city in the world!! I think we met all 27 of the inhabitants of the town! The medieval streets are so at-mospheric and inviting to discover them. It is great for a couple of hours visit! Kleinste Stadt der Welt!! Ich glaube, wir haben alle der 27 Einwohner der Stadt getroffen! Die mittelalterlichen Straßen sind so stimmungsvoll und laden dazu ein, sie zu entdecken. Es ist toll für ein paar Stunden Besichtigung!That is it guys! There are many more charming towns in the area, but these one were in my top list. Don’t skip them on your vacation when in Istria! I have spent 10 day tasting olive oil, drinking wine, enjoying delicious sea food and throwing myself to some extreme activities. There is so much to do in the region, it is unbelievable how 10 days were absolutely not enough to fully explore the little peninsula! If you are still thinking if you should visit or not, I hope this post was convincing enough! Disclaimer: I have been invited by Share Istria team for part of my stay in Istria. My opinion is honest, I absolutely loved the region! Das ist es Leute! Es gibt viele weitere charmante Städte auf dem Gebiet, aber diese hier waren auf mei-ner Top-Liste. Überspringe diese nicht auf deinem Urlaub, wenn du in Istrien bist! Ich habe 10 Tage damit verbracht Olivenöl zu ver-kosten, Wein zu trinken, schmackhafte Meeresfrüchte zu genießen und mich in extremen Aktivitäten zu versuchen. Es gibt so viel zu tun in dieser Region, es ist unglaublich dass 10 Tage absolut nicht ausreichend waren, um diese kleine Halbinsel vollständig zu erforschen! Falls du noch immer darüber nachdenkst, hierher zu kommen oder nicht, hoffe ich, dass dieser Post überzeugend genug war! Eine weitere charmante Stadt, besser bekannt als „Künstler-dorf”. Falls du diese in Juli oder August besuchst, wirst du die Möglichkeit haben, eine Menge an Musikern zu sehen, welche in den Straßen aufspielen. Au-ßer dass Grožnjan künstlerisch ist, ist es auch toll für Aktivitä-ten im Freien! Was sagst du zu 3 Stunden Radfahrt durch die pittoreske Landschaft und ihre Brücken? Es ist überhaupt nicht anstrengend, genieße einfach die fantastischen Aussichten!6. Pula-Pola Pula is the capital of the Istria region, it was not possible to skip it from my Top 8 cities in Istria! When in Pula (or Pola in Italian ) don’t miss the Arena. The Arena of Pula is the 6th largest coliseum in the world. It is also the only remain-ing Roman amphitheater to

have a four sided tower. Pula ist die Hauptstadt der Region Istri-en. Wenn man in Pula (oder Pola auf Italienisch) ist, darf man die Arena - das Amphitheater Pula - nicht versäumen. Dies war bei weitem das Beste was ich in Istrien gemacht habe! 3. Motovun-Montona Motovun is located on the very top of the mountain, if you have ever been to Tuscany, you will find the

landscape to be similar. Except being a beautiful medieval town which still keeps its walls, Motovun is also a Mecca for paragliders! I flew over the hilltop town and the green terrain! It was a marve-lous experience, even if I did paragliding before, the view made me feel like I am in the opening scene of a movie! Motovun liegt ganz an der Spitze des Berges; falls du jemals in der Toskana warst, wird dir die Landschaft ähnlich vorkommen. Außer, dass es eine wun-derschöne mittelalterliche Stadt ist, welche ihre Mauern erhalten hat, ist Motovun auch ein Mekka für Paragleiter! Ich bin über die Gipfelstadt und das grüne Gelände geflogen! Es war eine fabelhafte Erfahrung und obwohl ich bereits früher Paragleiten war, schenkte mir die Aussicht das Gefühl am Beginn einer Filmszene zu sein!4. Poreč-Parenzo Poreč is the city which history stretches back a long time It is one of the most touristic destinations in Croatia for good reason - it has a great balance of night life, family and extreme activities, beautiful beaches and good hotels. If interested, I recom-mend exploring the historical sites of the city with a tour guide. The Euphrasian Basilica, for instance, dates back to 4th century and it

is a UNESCO World Heritage site! Also, if you have never done rappelling before, check out the Baredine cave, it is a lot of fun! Poreč ist eine Stadt, deren Ge-schichte weit zurück reicht. Sie ist mit Grund eine der meist tou-ristischen Destinationen in Kroa-tien - sie hat eine gute Balance zwischen Nachtleben, Familie und extremen Aktivitäten, wun-derschönen Stränden und guten

Hotels. Falls Interesse besteht, empfehle ich die Erkundung der historischen Standorte der Stadt mit einem Reiseführer. Die Euphrasius-Basilika zum Beispiel datiert zurück in das 4. Jahrhundert und ist ein UNES-CO Welterbe Standort! Ebenso, falls du noch niemals Abseilen warst, solltest du dir die Baredi-ne Höhle anschauen, es macht wahnsinnig Spaß!

5. Grožnjan-Grisignana One more charming town better known as a “village of artists”. If you visit it in July or August you will be able to enjoy seeing plen-ty of musicians playing in the streets. In that time, the town starts to be filled with people, and you will hear anything from jazz to classic music. Except be-ing artistic, Grožnjan is great for outdoor activities! How about a 3 hours descend by bike through the picturesque landscape and its bridges? It is not difficult at all, just enjoy the fantastic views!

The region of Istria abounds with mountains, hills and valleys. It is not by chance that it is con-sidered the largest green oasis of the northern Adriatic. Olive groves and vineyards alternating towards the sea can be admired here. Every detail has been trans-formed in its history and tradition enshrined in its churches, towns and village streets. Over the eight days I visited Fažana, Rovinj, Por-er, Pula, Premantura, Motovun, Livade, Grožnjan and Novigrad. Die Region Istrien bietet sowohl Berge und Hügel, als auch Talsen-ken. Sie wird nicht nur zufällig als größte grüne Oase der Nordadria

betrachtet. Hier können Sie Olivenhaine und Weinfelder bewundern, welche sich ganz bis zum Meer gegenseitig abwechseln. Jedes De-tail ist in der Geschichte und Tradition abgefüllt, verwoben in den Kirchen, Städtchen, Dorfgässchen. Während der acht Tage habe ich Fažana, Rovinj, Porer, Pula, Premantura, Motovun, Livade, Grožn-jan und Novigrad besucht. What particularly impressed me and what do I remember most? Definitely the overnight stay in a light-house. Built in 1833 on the islet of Porer, a mile and half southwest from the southernmost point of the Istrian peninsula, the Cape of Kamenjak. With its 35 metre high tower, it is the highest lighthouse in Istria, guarded by a lighthouse keeper together with his two dogs - Medo who was particularly lovable and Max who was the complete opposite! The interior has two apartments, each with the possibility of hosting up to four people, with two bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen. Outside there is just sea for as far as the eye can see. The whole of this little island can be visited in just over a minute! Was besonders Eindruck auf mich gemacht hat und mir in Erinne-rung geblieben ist? Sicherlich die Übernachtung im Leuchtturm. Erbaut im Jahr 1833 auf dem Holm Porer, befindet es sich eineinhalb Meilen südwestlich vom südlichsten Punkt der Halbinsel Istrien, dem Kap Kamenjak. Mit einem Turm, welcher sich 35 Meter erhebt, ist er der größte Leuchtturm in Istrien. Hier verweilt ein Leuchtturmwärter mit zwei Hunden, von welchen einer besonders sympathisch ist und auf den Namen Medo (Bär) hört, und der zweite, Max, nicht so gerne kuschelt. Das Innere verbirgt zwei Appartements, von welchen jedes vier Personen beherbergen kann, mit jeweils zwei Schlafzimmern, Badezimmer und Küche. Und draußen ist nur das Meer. Der Holm kann in etwas mehr als einer Minute umgangen werden!

It is an area known for the Istrian white truffles, which are appreciated in the same way as those from France and Italy. Truffle hunting with dogs is certainly an entertaining experience. The architecture and art of Grožnjan are also rather interesting and enchanting. During those days spent within the Istrian interior, I tried extreme sport for myself and covered 20 km on a mountain bike along the Parenza-na, a trail which connects Trieste to Poreč. Another location wor-thy of note is definitely Pula, especially the Temple of Augustus, the Golden Gate, the Gate of Hercules and the Forum Square. Falls ihr nach einiger Zeit das blaue Meer und die Landschaft mit dem Grün austauschen und entdecken wollt, was sich im Inneren Istri-ens verbirgt, würde ich sagen, dass die Zeit für Bewegung und das Kennenlernen von Motovun und Grožnjan gekommen ist. Motovun befindet sich im nördlichen Teil Istriens und ist das charmanteste istrische mittelalterliche Städtchen. Dieses Gebiet ist bekannt für den istrischen weißen Trüffel, geschätzt wie jener in Frankreich und Italien. Und die Trüffeljagd mit Hunden ist wirklich eine amü-

sante Erfahrung. Die Architektur und Kunst von Grožnjan sind ebenfalls sehr sympathisch und interessant. Während der im In-neren Istriens verbrachten Tage habe ich mich im für mich ext-remen Sport versucht und sogar 20 km mit dem Mountainbike über den Parenzana, einem Weg der Triest und Poreč verbindet, hinter mich gelegt. Und noch ein Standort welchen ich hervorhe-

ben muss, ist sicherlich Pula, und besonders der Augustus-Tempel, das Goldene Tor, das Herkulestor und das Forum von Pula (Stadt-platz). Falls ihr über eine solche Art von Urlaub nachdenkt, empfehle ich euch, hier zwei Nächte zu ver-bringen: kommt am Vorabend, genießt den ersten Sonnenun-tergang zu einem Glas Wein, steigt auf den Turm, um euch näher mit dem Leuchtturm be-kannt zu machen und den Hori-zont zu bewundern, übernach-tet und verbringt den ganzen nächsten Tag in Gesellschaft eines guten Buches, mit den ei-genen Gedanken, Überlegungen in vollkommender Ruhe, und kehrt dann am nächsten Tag be-reit für eines der Sportabenteu-er auf dem Meer zurück. Genau so, da man mit der Barke vom Leuchtturm in etwa 20 Minuten bis zum Kap Kampenjak gelangt, wo man Surfen, SUP ausprobie-ren, Kajak fahren oder einfach nur sonnen und im Schatten der Bäume dösen kann. Bis Porer brauchten wir 20 Minuten mit der Barke, und als wir auf den Holm traten, hat sich alles in verzögertem Tempo abgewickelt. Die Zeit verging langsam und ließ uns jede Emo-tion, welche uns befriedigte, ge-nießen. Wir haben auf Porer drei unvergessliche Nächte erlebt. Das Munterwerden auf dem Leuchtturm ist wahrlich ein ein-zigartiges Erlebnis.
