Knitting by Intarsia The legs of these patterns are worked using the intarsia method. Occasionally, there will be places where it is appropriate to carry yarns across a few stitches. If you wish to carry farther than 2 sts, then weave the yarn in as you would when knitting Fair Isle. You will need to avoid long carries which might catch on toes as they are slipped into the sock. Because these socks are primarily intarsia, they will be worked flat until after the rib and chart are complete.

Cuff and Leg Do NOT work in the round until after the chart is completed. Leaving a 12" tail of yarn to seam the back leg of the sock, loosely cast on 56 stitches using the single-pointed needles and Wedgewood yarn. If the cast-on is too tight, the sock will not slip easily over the foot. Work in K2, P2 rib for 1¼". Follow the chart, decreasing 4 stitches where indicated.

When the chart is complete, weave in the ends and lightly block the piece.

Divide the stitches onto 3 double-pointed needles. Connect and knit around for 4 rows using Tundra.

Thread the 12" tail of yarn at the top of the rib cuff onto a tapestry needle. Sew up the back of the sock leg using an invisible seam.

Continue with Tundra for the rest of the sock.

Divide for Heel Place 13 stitches each on two needles from the front of the sock. These are the instep stitches. Place the remaining 26 sts (13 sts from each side of the back seam) on one needle for the heel. Work the 26 heel stitches in the following two rows for 2½"(3"). Row 1: (Wrong side)[ Slip 1, P1] across the row. Row 2: Slip 1, then knit the remaining sts across.

Gusset Pick up 14(17) stitches along right side of heel. Knit across the 26 stitches of the instep. Pick up 14(17) stitches along the left side of the heel.

The stitches should be arranged on three needles as follows:

Needle 1: 22(25) sts (left of center heel) Needle 2: 26 instep stitches Needle 3: 22(25) sts (right of center heel)

Row 1: Knit the stitches on needle 1 up to the last 3 sts, then K2tog, K1. Knit all the stitches on needle 2. On needle 3, K1, SKP, then knit remaining stitches on the needle. Row 2: Knit stitches on all 3 needles.

Repeat these 2 rows, until there are 13 stitches each on needles #1 and #3.

Continue to knit around the foot until the sock is 8"(9½") from the center back of the heel, or 2" short of the desired length of the sock. This is an easy place to customize, so check the foot length if possible.

Shaping the Toe Knit the stitches on needle #1 up to the last 3

stitches, then K2tog, K1. On needle #2, K1, SKP, knit up to the last 3 stitches then K2tog, K1. On needle #3, K1, SKP, then knit the remaining stitches. Continue every round in this way until there are 4 stitches each on needles #1 and #3, and 8 stitches remain on needle #2.

Weaving the Toe Stitches Together Slip the stitches from needles #1 and #3 onto the same needle. Break off the yarn leaving 12" and thread it onto a tapestry needle.

Holding the needles parallel to each other: Step 1: Run the tapestry needle (TN) knitwise through the first stitch of the front needle and slip it off. Run the TN through the next stitch on the front needle purlwise and do not slip it off. Step 2: Run the TN through the first stitch on the back needle purlwise and slip it off, then run the TN through the next stitch on the back needle knitwise and leave it on.

Repeat these two steps until there is only one stitch left on each needle. Then with the TN slip the stitch off the front needle knitwise, and the stitch off the back needle purlwise. Bring the remaining yarn to the inside of the sock. Secure yarn, and clip excess.

Continue every round in this way until there are 3 stitches each on needles #1 and #3, and 6 stitches remain on needle #2.
