AUTUMN NEWSLETTER 2016

Dear FriendsI can’t believe that Spin A Yarn is celebrating its 10th Birthday on 4 July! It seems such a short time since I shocked my spinning group at Widecombe-in –the Moor by announcing that I was going to open a Knitting Shop in Bovey Tracey. My friends all thought I was mad of course and perhaps I was, as I had no previous experience of running a business. However, I decided that I wanted to open a different, friendly and interesting shop which would stock lots of natural unusual yarns that people found difficult to obtain in the UK. I spent many happy hours deciding on which yarns I should stock and then contacting different suppliers.

The first yarns that I ordered were from Touchyarns and Rareyarns, New Zealand. This choice was because my daughters fell in love with their yarns while on a family holiday in NZ in 2005. So much so, that I had to teach them to knit.

These New Zealand yarns are still great favourites with my customers because of their quality and colours and because they are obtained from extremely happy animals! I’ve included two photos from the early days for your amusement. Doesn’t the shop look tiny?

I remember when my wonderful customers helped us move up the road to 26 Fore Street in 2009; some suggested that because the new shop was so much larger, it might be difficult to fill! Not for a yarn addict like me……..!! Now, of course, we have completely renovated the new shop and it is looking even more beautiful than usual. There are new seating areas and plenty of browsing space to enjoy your cup of coffee even on workshop days. Do drop in and see our changes.

AUTUMN WORKSHOPS 2016

PROFESSIONAL FINISHING TECHNIQUES

It is often the finishing details that make the difference to a garment and this workshop will show you techniques to make sure your garment has a professional finish. You will learn how easy it is to sew up all your unfinished projects using mattress stitch.

Topics include: How to sew up various styles of garment, mattress stitch, blocking and pressing pieces, shaping to make sewing up easier, picking up stitches, buttonholes and more.

You will need: make four identical samples of stocking stitch to measure 10cm x 10cm (4in x 4in), using a light-coloured, smooth aran or chunky yarn.

If you usually work the edge stitches differently (slipping or knitting on every row), please work them the same as the rest of the row. Don’t press or steam any of the samples and don’t sew in the yarn ends.Bring plenty of your yarn for knitting and sewing up. Bring along an unfinished project for help and advice.

Dates: Friday 16th September 2016Time: 10.00am – 4.00pmPrice: £49.00(includes home-cooked food and tea-time treats)

MODULAR OR PATCHWORK KNITTING (from squares to shells)

This workshop is suitable for beginners, as well as knitters who have tried modular knitting before.

Modular knitting (aka mitred squares or domino knitting) is a great patchwork technique, and easy to learn. Shapes are joined together as you knit so no seams to sew and stunning colour effects can be created. Progress from a basic square to shells, strips, triangles, hexagons and more. Experiment with colour, join the shapes together to construct accessories and garments.

Topics include: knitting the shapes, joining techniques, designing with modular knitting.

You will need: plenty of yarn in different thicknesses with suitable needles. You can also bring along any modular pattern that you would like to try.

Date: Friday 30th September 2016Time: 10.00am – 4.00pmPrice: £49.00(includes home-cooked food and tea-time treats)

WORKSHOPS SELL OUT VERY FAST!

Don’t forget to ring as soon as you get your new schedule! Participants of workshops receive a voucher entitling them to 10% or 15% discount on all yarns and accessories.

SWEATER REFASHIONING A workshop for anyone who has knitted a garment that doesn’t quite fit; maybe it’s too loose or too tight, too short or sleeves too long. Bring along those garments that you love but aren’t quite right.

Learn how to make them fit, by altering the length, adding waist shaping, changing the neckline, adding sleeves, shortening sleeves, adding ribs, removing ribs etc. Also, how to alter a pattern so you knit exactly what you want.

Learn how to extend the life of a garment by refashioning it; change it from a sweater to a cardigan, add embellishments, borders and more.

Topics include: lengthening, shortening, adding or reducing width, altering the neck, fixing mistakes

You will need: existing garment(s) to alter, a pattern to alter. Bring yarn needles and scissors.

Date: Friday 18th November 2016Time: 10.00am – 4.00pmPrice: £49.00(includes home-cooked food and tea-time treats)

REVERSIBLE OR DOUBLE KNITTING Double knitting is an intriguing technique that makes a double layered fabric which is the same on both sides. Stocking stitch has two knit sides which means that items made in double knitting always show a ‘right’ side. It is ideal for scarves and blankets because it lies flat and it also makes very cosy hats, sweaters, mittens etc.

Colour patterns such as fair isle style motifs and intarsia blocks appear with the colours inverted on one side so items are reversible with no stranding or ‘wrong’ side showing. It is also useful for knitting seamless tubes (glove fingers, toys etc) and socks without using double pointed or circular needles.

In the workshop, you will knit a sample of two colour double knitting to learn the basic ideas for designs for other items. You can also bring along a double knitting pattern that you would like to try.

Topics include: choosing suitable yarns, casting on, working knit and purl stitches in double knitting, following a chart, ideas for using double knitting.

You will need: DK weight yarn in two colours, 3.25mm and 4mm needles.

“RISE” SCARFThis course will teach you to knit a new version of the Rise scarf, from Alison’s book, Elements. In the book, this slender tubular scarf is knitted flat and then seamed. For this course, she has redesigned Rise to be knitted in the round on either DPNs, or by Magic Loop, or on 2 short circular needles, which ever you prefer!

You will need: 2 – 3 balls of DK yarn, plus 1 – 2 balls of Kidsilk Haze (this is governed by how long you wish to make it); a further option is to use several shades of Kid Silk Haze in small quantities to make a multi-shade scarf – great for stash busting.

Whichever you want to make, you will need to have 2 or 3 balls of DK yarn as the base yarn in the same shade. You will also need 4mm needles and 3.75mm needles suitable for knitting in the round (these can be DPNs, or 2 short circular needles, or one long circular needle for Magic Loop, which ever you prefer) and a stitch marker. Yarn and needles are available to buy at Spin A Yarn with your workshop discount on the day.

This course is suitable for knitters who can already knit in the round. No other special skills are needed.

Day: Thursday 3rd November 2016Time: 10.00am – 4.00pmPrice: £49.00 (includes home-cooked lunch and tea-time treats)

OWL MITTSOn this course, we will knit the Cable Owl Fingerless Mittens. These cute mitts are quick, economical and easy to knit and they make great Christmas gifts too.

You will need: 2 balls of DK yarn with 100% or high wool content, for example Rowan Felted Tweed or Baby Merino Silk DK, but any DK like these will be fine; plus 3mm needles to knit in the round. (Alison used and will be teaching on DPNs but if you prefer Magic Loop or 2 short circular needles, that is also fine). Also 3 stitch markers; a cable needle; 20 beads, size 5 or 6, OR 20 tiny buttons. If you know you are a very tight knitter please consider also bringing 3.25mm needles. All these materials are available at Spin A Yarn and can be bought with your workshop discount on the day.

This course is suitable for knitters who are reasonably experienced but if you cannot knit in the round, she will teach you to do this on DPNs so that is what you will need to bring!
